In November we were very excited, having just returned from Peru, to check this place out. Our favorite drink in Peru was not the Pisco Sour as it is just too cloying, but was the Chilcano (pisco, ginger ale and lime juice basically). Our first trip to Aji, we ordered the Chilcano and it was awful. For some strange reason they added passion fruit and all of these fruit garnishes. Definitely not what we expected. We also had picked out a bunch of dishes that we wanted to try and for some reason they did not have at least half of them (no salmon at all). We chalked this up to them being a newer restaurant. They served us the traditional Peruvian concha (toasted corn kernels tossed in salt) with our drinks. I was limited in what I could order due to cilantro, much more limited at Aji than at anywhere in Peru. We ordered a crab meat Causa, the Pearla Nikkei roll and Kevin ordered a Leche de Tigre Aji Amarillo. The causa was good, not great. The roll was not tasty, not great. Kevin liked the Leche de Tigre but not how it is served in the glass. It makes it tough to eat.
Today’s return was extremely disappointing, for me especially. I believe we had the same bartender. We did not make the mistake of ordering a Chilcano this time. Kevin ordered his favorite Peruvian beer and I just stuck with a gin and tonic, again served with a bunch of odd fruits and herbs like rosemary sprigs. Again they served us concha with our drinks, however this time there was zero salt. You can see the salt on the picture of the first visit. It has to be tossed with salt immediately after toasting or it will not stick. For some reason he thought he could just hand us some plain old iodized salt and this would fix it. No, it did not. Also, there was a huge bin of premade saltless concha for them to scoop from for the rest of the night. It’s two ingredients – corn kernels and salt so it’s missing half of the ingredients.
He was not especially helpful either in recommendations of dishes to order sin cilantro, so I tried again to order from their Nigiri selections (which they did not have last time and it is a whole section of the menu) and was told that they never have any nigiri. What? Why is there an entire section of nigiri then? So again, I ordered a different sushi roll called the Pacific Velvet and Kevin ordered ceviche with Aji Amarillo. I will first say that Kevin LOVED his ceviche! However, my roll which is supposed to be – fresh salmon, avocado, and cream cheese, rolled with tuna and finished with spicy mayo, eel sauce and rice seasoning. When I got my roll and tasted it, it had a very strange flavor to it. I remembered seeing the roll below mine having the same ingredients except having a passion fruit sauce instead of eel. I don’t like passion fruit as it is quite pungent. Kevin tried it and said it was off too. I tasted what they tried to pass off as eel sauce by itself and it definitely was not. They finally admitted it was passion fruit sauce. The server that brought it to me asked if I wanted them to remake it and I said yes and to please serve it with spicy mayo and eel sauce. It arrived with just spicy mayo, I asked where the eel sauce was and they said they don’t have any because they mix it with the passion fruit. In thinking about this later, if they mix it with the passion fruit, why do they not have any by itself? The roll itself was very cold, just okay and had hardly any fish at all, just slivers. Kevin said that the cream cheese itself was actually sour.
I am positive all of you cilantro lovers out there can enjoy the Peruvian dishes as Kevin definitely loved his ceviche today, but if you are as limited by the menu as I was and with no suggestions from the staff, this place will not be a standout for you.
Atmosphere – 10/10:
When you walk in, you will get to enjoy a mix of sophiscated modern restaurant (bar, TV) vibe with a hint of peruvian decoration, which make the whole experience felt genuien.
Service – 6/10 (please note that this may be a standalone incident to our visits and may not reflect your actual experience so don’t let this stop you from going to the restaurant and enjoy the food):
A stark contrast between the two server that we got for our table. After being led to our table, our fist waitress drop off the menu, introduced herself and immediately left our table to attend to other matter (and never came back). Didn’t ask if we are first timer or return customer, nor ask if we want water or something else to drink.
We eventually got a different waiter (about 5 – 10 minutes later) assigned to our table. He did a wonderful job explaining the menu after hearing it’s our first time here, and brought us water right away. He was very low-key but attentative, which significantly made up for the initial experience.
Food – 8/10:
Overall, the food was delicious, very well prepared (presentation) and extremely fresh. However, some of the main dishes that we ordered are leaning towards the salty side (if enjoyed alone).
The Ceviche sampler (10/10, highly recommend ordering) was on point, fresh, full of flavor, and packed a punch. Lime flavoring was very well balanced, and fresh without overpowering the fish’s sweetness.
Risotto a la huancaina (8/10): the risotto was creamy, and the beef chucks were perfectly cooked (chef kiss). HOWEVER, do take note that the sauce for this dish was extremly salty.
Pasta en tinta de calamar (8/10): sea food and pasta were perfectly cooked tasted very fresh. Again, similar to the risotto, the sauce is also a bit on the salty side.
Ambiance:
Beautiful space—modern, chic, and the kind of stylish atmosphere you’d expect in Vegas or Miami. It instantly sets the tone for a great night out.
Service:
Friendly and welcoming, though I do wish the staff explained the menu a bit more. I’m not very familiar with Peruvian cuisine, so some additional guidance beyond “it’s delicious” or “it’s popular” would’ve made the experience even better.
Food:
• Anticuchero – Mixed seafood ceviche with grilled octopus. Even as a casual ceviche eater, I thought it was solid.
• Tampa Pabla Y Fuego – A grilled platter with chicken, steak, chorizo, and beef heart. Great flavors overall, but the chicken was on the dry side.
• Arroz Chaufa – My personal favorite. Their Peruvian-style fried rice was packed with flavor and easily the standout dish for me.
• Tres Leches with Lucuma – Light, creamy, and the perfect dessert to share.
I later realized they also offer sushi and pasta, which means this review only scratches the surface of the menu. For now, it’s a strong 4 stars from me, with plans to return and explore more dishes.
Looking forward to coming back and trying the rest of what they have to offer.
The menu is extensive to the point of being a little intimidating but our server Gavi was very happy to walk us through it and the entire service experience was lovely.
We ended up getting several starters to share, including classic version of Leche de Tigre, along with Causas with crab meat we tried 2 dishes with crab and the quality of the crab meat was outstanding in both. Tostones Pulpa de Cangrejo was the second one.
We tried one of the sushi rolls the Acevichado which was well presented and definitely more than enough to share, I was a little disappointed that they put a little bit of cream cheese in there that was not listed in the description. I am not a cream cheese in rolls person, but it was small and tucked in next to the avocado so it wasn’t terribly intrusive.
We had the Lomo Saltado for our main and it was delicious with wonderful tender stir fried beef and red onions and tomatoes stir fried in a beefy soy flavored sauce, which worked perfectly for dipping the crispy french fries, that come with it, into.
Our other friends got the seco con frijoles which is slow braised beef with creamy canary beans. This was like the most perfect pot roast or short ribs you have ever tasted. The beans were cooked until they were almost falling apart and were the perfect accompaniment for the meat.
We of course tried the Pisco Sour and then a several Peruvian beers along with a fascination cocktail called Sandia Bay which had a variety of ingredients that you would not imagine putting together, but was absolutely delicious.
All in all we were enchanted with the entire affair. We will definitely be going back to try some more of the menu and revisit a couple of our favorites from this visit as well.
I would encourage you very much to study the menu a bit in advance and then Go!
Five stars all around. Tomas was an incredible host/waiter. Simply exceptional.
He checked on us consistently while seamlessly handling his other tables attentive without ever being intrusive. Truly amazing service.
The food? Absolutely 5-star worthy. From flavor to presentation, this Peruvian restaurant surpasses most Peruvian spots in Tampa. If you’re looking for authentic Peruvian cuisine, don’t settle for average come here (or visit their other Tampa location).
This is Peruvian food at its best. The ceviche was the star of our order, fresh, vibrant, and made to perfection.
Worth every bite.
Make sure and ask for a side of Peruvian picante if you dare, and if you’re on the adventurous side order a ‘Lucuma ala Darin’ cocktail for a trip on the wild side…
