An outstanding dining experience from start to finish. The atmosphere is elegant yet relaxed, perfect for a special evening. The steak was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and paired beautifully with a bold Cabernet. The duck breast was exceptional — tender, rich, and perfectly balanced with its sauce.

The wine selection is excellent, and the staff is knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. Everything from the presentation to the timing of the courses felt thoughtfully done.

Highly recommend for a date night or a refined dinner. We’ll definitely be back!

This place was the best find around all the venues in the area. The service was stellar, and the staff acknowledged our timeline and made sure we were out in time for the ballet. Don’t pass up the beef tartare, so flavorful. I had the homemade tagateilli, it was light and flavorful. The carrot cake at the end was superb, the only downside was I wanted more! The ambiance in the little round booths was perfect for date night! Don’t hesitate to book if your off to the opera, ballet or theater!

People who work here are really nice and friendly hence the 2 stars overall. 5+ stars for them!
Unfortunately, food left a lot to be desired.
Duck was not cooked properly. Fat was not rendered and duck was not prepared properly before cooking either. I tasted a piece of duck and I could not even chew or swallow it since it was all fat and skin was chewy. Lentils were underdone and pomegranate seeds in the lentils were not a good addition. The first bite of fish was good before I realized that it was swimming in butter (see picture) and was over a very buttery mashed potato. I gave everyone big bites to taste since it was too buttery for me to eat after a few bites. Beef dish was a bit chewy and over cooked, and the gravy had cooled and had a film when it arrived at the table. Burger was strange since it was a huge bun with lots of fries, and was smothered in aioli. Seemed out of place on the menu. Don’t order dessert. The apple strudel was literally a sliver the width of a little pinky….seriously. It was cutely decorated with flowers. Overall, we’re perplexed about the high rating for food. No appetizers or drinks, 4 people = $250.

I love their cocktails but feel always that their food main menu is okay especially for the price. It’s okay but not inspiring or memorable.
The salad with persimmon was great but the scallops and the mushroom tagliatelle were just okay. Honestly, I will go back there for the appetizers and drinks, not for the main menu.

We arrived at the restaurant right when it opened at 11:30, which turned out to be a great decision—perfect timing before the crowds. We got a cozy table for two, and our waitress was exceptionally polite and friendly, making us feel very welcome. For our meal, we ordered the duck confit and the burger, both of which were absolutely delicious and generously portioned. The highlight, however, was the chilled mussels we had as a starter—they were incredibly fresh and sweet, an unexpected delight. On top of the great food, the prices were very reasonable for lunch, making it an excellent value. I would definitely recommend this place and plan to bring my friends here next time!

We have had the pleasure dining at Absinthe five times and loved it each time, as did our guests. This time: OpenTable said no table till 7:45 on 2/21/26. We knew OT does not tell the truth so we called. It said 7:45 only; we needed earlier bc of a show at SF Jazz. We called and emailed for over a week: crickets. We called the private dining coordinator bc we wanted our future dtr-in-law to experience you—for rehearsal dinner. The coordinator had to text the mgr twice before we got a call.
The waiter was spirited but service was not good. We all ordered steak frites. Steak was barely warm and tough. We had to put up a flag to get steak knives. French onion soup was like over-boiled broth. The crudite was not the fish as on the menu and was flat.
To say the least the future dtr-in-law nixed this as an option.
Very sad.

Had dinner here last week—everything was great, but the French onion soup stole the show! I’ll definitely be back.

I recently dined at Absinthe in Hayes Valley, and I must say, it was a delightful experience from start to finish! The atmosphere is charming and cozy, making it the perfect spot for a special occasion or a casual night out.

What truly stood out was the attentive service. Our server and server assists were all friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and made excellent recommendations. They checked in on us just the right amount, ensuring we had everything we needed without being intrusive.

The food was exceptional! I highly recommend trying their stand out dishes, the duck breast with truffle accompaniment, steak and the truffle burger all bursting with flavor.

Overall, Absinthe is a gem in San Francisco located in the great Hayes valley neighborhood With its fantastic service and delicious cuisine,

We celebrated my husband’s birthday here last night. Ethan took great care of us – very knowledgeable about the menu and gluten-free options. He made the night very special with gifts of dessert and espresso. Our wine steward, Francisco was also very kind and helpful. The beef tartare, beef bourguignon, and duck were beautifully presented and delicious.
