Reviews
I’m a native to sushi and having been around this area for shy of a decade and I wanted to try a new sushi place as I’ve often ventured out usually 30+ minutes to my other ‘go-to’ spots. I was searching for quite a while and eventually landed on Abashiri in Bloomingdale. Reading other reviews, I was very hopeful that the food was going to absolutely deliver.
Upon walking in, I noticed the place was not yet too busy, it’s not by any means a large restaurant but it’s not super small, it would best be defined as ‘cozy’ even at ~5:00PM on a Monday evening. Promptly seated, was told to sit anywhere and got to see the menu. I noticed right away despite their ala carte menu, their AYCE menu did not offer much, they were in fact all rolls, no sashimi or nigiri or any kind, not even miso soup for appetizers, just salad and all rolls.
The waitress had was fairly dismissive, not rude but just.. uninterested. Not a big deal but I thought it was quite strange; almost as if she had better things to do. Ordered a few rolls and an appetizer just to get myself going and when it finally came out – it really wasn’t that impressive. The fish to rice ratio wasn’t terrible, which I would say was the only saving grace but the fish itself really did not taste any different than let’s says Jewel or Mariano sushi you’d find in their pick-up aisles.
All in all, very underwhelming and while the price wasn’t terrible given the current pricing of food nowadays, it’s definitely not in my opinion “the best AYCE in the area” as others have stated – unless if all you care about are rolls. I was so surprised that there were only rolls that I did ask to confirm if they included the sashimi or nigiri on the AYCE and I was told it was not.
What a surprise as there are literally every other AYCE sushi places I’ve been to for decades and they have all included it and still do, along with miso soup and other items. I would not say that this place is worth returning to – but it was a good first try but not worth going back in the slightest.
As for the the food…. excellent!!!!
The variety of rolls was great and the appetizers were on point.
They also offered baked rolls, and I highly any of them.
Although they were busy, the service was good and we were taken care of well.
If you’re looking for a great sushi spot in the west suburbs, this is the spot!
A+++
