I recently ordered a gluten free cake from A Sweet Morsel for my birthday. I was delighted that this bakery offered gluten free, custom decorated cakes at a very reasonable price point. Not many places in Pittsburgh do!

TLDR: the few design elements I wanted were poorly executed, and the cake itself was rubbery and did not taste good. The customer service I received through the ordering process was (mostly) good.

The ordering process: I sent the bakery an email with my desired design- a single tier cake with black frosting and decorated with sage green leaves/vines and dark red roses placed sporadically an the top and sides of the cake. I also requested “XXV” be written on top of the cake in gold frosting in a small font (about 0.75” tall). Casey promptly called me back to discuss options that would make this possible. Chocolate frosting could be dyed black, they could do the vines, but the roses would probably fall off due to the consistency of the frosting this bakery uses. Additionally, they did not have any way to make the golden frosting, and it would have to be yellow. I really appreciated Casey’s transparency with what was achievable, though I was a little disappointed by the limitations of this bakery since they do so many custom cakes. Regardless, I was able to easily place my order on their website after consulting with Casey, who offered to take the order over the phone as well.

Scheduling Pickup: I had originally scheduled the pickup for 2 PM. The morning of pickup, I called them and asked if, by any chance, the cake could be ready at noon, if not, it would be no big deal and 2 would be fine since that was what was originally agreed upon and it was late notice. They said it could be ready a bit after noon, so I really appreciated their flexibility on the matter. A few minutes later, they called me to say that they had forgotten to bake half my cake, and that it would be ready at 2. This was a little disappointing, but hey, at least I was getting a very fresh cake!

The pickup: I had a family member pick up the cake so I can’t comment on this.

The decorations: I was very disappointed with the look of the cake. The green leaves were more of a mint color rather than dark green, and the writing in yellow on top was much larger than I requested. I was able to add the fresh roses and gold luster dust to fix it up, but with so few elements, I was disappointed with the look.

The taste of the cake: if all of this had happened but the cake was delicious, I would not be writing this review. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst gluten free cakes I’ve ever had. The chocolate frosting was nearly flavorless, there was hardly any of the raspberry filling in it at all, and the cake itself was rubbery and tasteless. If you would have told me the cake was stale, I would have believed you. Considering that (at least half of) this cake was freshly made just hours before, this is likely attributed to a poor recipe and/or incorrect baking times.

While I can’t attest to the quality of their gluten-containing baked goods, I would not recommend a gluten free cake from this bakery.

I normally don’t write reviews for much of anything, but I was so pleased with what I ordered I wanted to for this one. I wanted to order a cupcake cake for my birthday in the shape of a magnifying glass since my birthday party was a scavenger hunt. I reached out over Facebook messenger and the person I talked to answered my questions and asked her own in a timely and professional manner. When I ordered the cake, I included a picture of what I wanted the inside of the magnifying glass to look like. The cake was ready the day they said it would be, it didn’t just look like I wanted, but BETTER than pictured. So it looks great, but did the taste hold up? YES! The cupcakes were moist and tasty, and the icing was delicious. I will be telling everyone about this place and will certainly return.

A Sweet Morsel is my go to bakery. I recommend it to anyone in the North Hills area. I’ve worked with them for custom cupcakes for an event we hosted and most recently for a baby shower cake. Everyone always raves about how delicious desserts are. They’re extremely responsive and easy to work with.

On the weekends I try to stop by to pick up their thumbprints, cookie sandwiches, or the peanut butter skillet bars (which do not last long in our house as they’re so good!!).

Highly recommend A Sweet Morsel Co for your wedding cake! I did a classic two tiered cake and provided sample photos and floral pieces and they made it look beautiful! The owner doesn’t compromise on taste when it comes to her cakes. Everyone thought it was delicious and I don’t think I’ll be saving my cake top for a year, I’ll be eating it way before then :). (Also love their sugar cookies and cake pops!!!)

I ordered a half dozen gender reveal cupcakes on a Thursday to pick up on Saturday morning. They were so nice on the phone when ordering. When picking up, the lady made sure I didn’t see the gender written on the receipt. The cupcakes were so good! I wish I would have taken a before picture. They were perfect. I will be ordering from them in the future!

Please beware of this bakery. I wanted to try a small business by my house for my daughters birthday, and I have nothing but regret. We picked our cake up on Friday afternoon for a Saturday am party and this is what we were handed (of course the box was covered so we could not see the cake at pick up, nor was it shown to us.) The cookie was stale and heavy, smudging the surrounding icing and decorations. I was told my daughters name couldn’t be written on the cake, when there is clearly plenty of room for a name. Overall, I did my best to fix this cake the night before the party as I was truly mortified to display this, but it still didn’t look near worth the $100. I tried to order a new cake from Giant Eagle, but was out of time. I stated my concerns to the owner, Anna, who doubled down that all mistakes were on our end for “mishandling” the box. Please note, when holding the box, the sides would not touch the front of the cake where all of the issues are. Please, please beware of this bakery.

Omg! Did I say omg! I ordered a cake from here for my birthday and almost had an anxiety attack. I couldn’t wait to take a bite of this cake!
So, as a child, you dream of candy falling from the sky. Well, this cake looks like candy literally fell from the sky and fell onto my birthday cake! Can you hear the excitement through my description?
Within 36 hours of my event, I was able to special order this cake, which was a plus. The cake was moist, fresh, sweet, designed by a genius, well packaged, and definitely not shorted any toppings. The payment and pick up process was easy peasy. The website was easy to navigate and showed clear realistic pictures of their products.
I’m excited to go back although my doctor may frown upon it.
If you want some sweet, yummy in your tummy, make ya mouth drool baked goods, then stop by.
You won’t be disappointed.

At A Sweet Morsel, my husband bought me a container of varied cookies. The apricot kolache had the perfect amount of apricot filling. The snickerdoodles were moist and flavorful. The chocolate coconut bites were very coconut. The lady locks were tasty but a little dry. The pecan dips, lemon shortbread, peanut butter blossoms, and sprinkle sugar cookies tasted average. A Sweet Morsel does sell many other products, such as cakes and cupcakes, so I might try some of those in the future. I would return for the 5-star apricot kolaches.
