I’ve been to The Free Spirit a few times now, and it’s quickly becoming my favorite Northside spot. Most people expect bar food to be a grease-fest, but the food here is shockingly fresh, tasty, and not soaked in oil.
The biggest selling point for this location is the late-night kitchen. It is incredibly difficult to find quality food at odd hours near Castleton Square Mall, but these guys deliver every time. Their made-to-order thin crust pizza is made fresh, per order, and helpful hint: 16-inch is absolutely massive (but the price was very reasonable). Just a heads up: it’s so big it likely won’t even fit in your fridge if you have leftovers!
The atmosphere has a total “Cheers” feeling- there is a loyal group of local regulars and a very diverse crowd, but the staff makes you feel welcome regardless. Every encounter I’ve had with the team has been great; they are helpful, attentive, and don’t mind if you’re just there to grab a quick bite.
Highlights:

The Pizza: Incredible made-to-order thin crust (the 16″ is huge!).
Entertainment: Two well-maintained pool tables, tons of flat screen TVs with all the sports you could want, and more.

Free spirit is, hands down, my favorite bar in town. All of the staff are absolutely wonderful. They are kind, attentive and timely. Everytime I go I know they know my order (being a regular has its perks) but even more so everyone that works there genuinely cares for their customers. The food and drinks are always outstanding and fairly priced. I’m a die hard Free Spirit fan and recommend for any occasion! Couldnt say enough how much I love this bar!

Above average in every category, excellent pricing on food and drinks. Great place to watch a game, eat an unfussy meal, or have a couple beers without breaking a $50. Pool (billiards) upstairs and ample seating.

The food was amazing!! Service was awesome. We had different people checking on us thru out the evening. We went for my bday and we definitely have said we wanna go back. The live music was awesome. It’s a convenient location also!!!

Was a regular. Got charged for more drinks than my friend and I had (I paid for both of us) when we brought it up both bartenders were rude. I had five drinks my friend only had two and I got charged for ten. I went ahead and paid but the comment of “well I’m sober and you’re not” was completely unnecessary. I still paid but yall genuinely overcharged me. We won’t be back which sucks because we loved going but how that was handled was insane.

Understand that my review is Nov. 2025. I have never rated a place, restaurant or nothing relate to this category. The girl running the show that night was very unprofessional and rude. I will never go back or recommend you go to this place. Very unprofessional and unsafe. Do not come to this place until they replace management.

The female bartender was so unfriendly. Male bartender ok. At least smiled. Local patrons were rude and obviously ran the place. The ladies room smelled like a porta potty on a hot summer day with a twist of infection. Clean your restrooms!!!

Chicken tenders and Quesadilla are phenomenal. Service is solid. Avoid at all costs if there are sports on. Multiple times we’ve done in to watch an NFL prime time game, and there’s a been a mediocre DJ. Painfully loud music.
Great bar, go somewhere else if they a DJ. Ale Emporium is down the road!
