Food was delicious and the atmosphere at SAX was elegant and intimate; perfect ambiance. We started with the tuna tartare which was sooo good, the calamari were crispy and tasty. For our main had the steak and lobster, highly recommend adding the truffle sauce. Drinks were really good and of course finished our meal with a delicious apple dessert. Patrick was so great and attentive and we highly recommend checking out SAX. They also have a great brunch menu, the French toast is a must!

My husband and I stood at The Reeds at Shelter Haven and enjoyed dinner and breakfast at this wonderful restaurant. The staff were very friendly and the food was delicious.

I had not visited in a couple of years, but stopped in again recently and had a mixed experience. This is a great property with tremendous potential.

Food and beverage quality – the martini was excellent, the $33 meatloaf was so-so. It is the off-season and it was not “fresh.”

Service – the service was pretty good, but would be even better if the bartender wasn’t so loud (see below) and didn’t make the bar about him (e.g., fancy pours). He has the potential to be an excellent bartender.

Atmosphere – the atmosphere is excellent, except that the bar area does not appear to have any noise mitigating.

Overall, the value was “just OK” given the above. I would certainly return, just some feedback and my opinions here.

Update

I’m updating my review, from 2-stars to 4-stars, based on additional experience at Sax.

I tried it again for happy hour. The food and beverage quality was great. They have a nice happy hour menu, with $10 smash burgers. The french fries were outstanding. And the service was great (Ashley).

My partner and I had dinner at SAX while we were staying at the hotel and were very pleasantly surprised by our experience. We loved the ambiance which was intimate and a little sexy. Our server, Dario, was fantastic – super knowledgable and personable. The food was delicious and seemed to be on par with other nice restaurants in the area. Definitely suggest checking it out if you’re staying at The Reeds!

This place missed the mark entirely for our experience. We tried to make a reservation months out and thankfully called to confirm a few weeks prior to our visit since it seemed the reservation was never actually made. We made a note that we were coming in to celebrate a wedding – it was 6 of us total including the bride (me) and the groom. It was going to be a nice intimate dinner to celebrate. Nothing was said to us when we walked in about celebrating (even though I was in a wedding dress so clearly celebrating something) and then when we were seated, the waiter mentioned “oh I thought I saw a note or something about that”.
Not a huge deal if that is all that happened. But we ordered drinks, appetizers, and meals. Drinks were okay, soups came out cold and food was not cooked correctly. For this being an upscale restaurant off-season with the restaurant not being full, there is zero reason why food should be cooked incorrectly or things not be hot.
We went back the next day to speak to the manager about our experience and basically were brushed off. There was no sincerity behind the non-apology and it seemed like because we were a small party outside of the events being held this past weekend, it didn’t matter to them that we were not satisfied.
Having sub-par food is already disappointing, but to then be dismissed and our disappointment not acknowledged in a professional manner makes it so much worse.
We frequent the island pretty often as we have family there so it would have been nice to be able to come back and experience this restaurant in future years to celebrate other family milestones and anniversaries but safe to say I am very okay with never returning to this establishment.

New Year’s Eve Dinner — Excellent Food, Disappointing Execution

To start with the positives: the food itself was excellent. The deviled egg with caviar was flavorful and well balanced. The crab cake ensemble was genuinely the best I have ever had. The filet was cooked properly and paired nicely with the asparagus and potatoes. From a culinary standpoint, the kitchen clearly delivered.

Unfortunately, the overall experience fell short of what one would expect for a New Year’s Eve dinner at this level.

There was no coat check, which resulted in bulky winter coats draped over chairs throughout the dining room, detracting from the atmosphere. The manager on duty was poorly dressed for the occasion and displayed overly jittery, erratic movements that came across as unprofessional and distracting.

Service issues compounded the problem. I never received the second drink I ordered, and about 15 minutes later that same manager approached to ask if I was still waiting for it. At that point, our meal was already over and I simply asked for the check. Plates were cleared from my son and me while my wife was still actively eating, leaving her as the only one at the table with food still in front of her — an awkward and avoidable lapse in service awareness.

There was also a course of sorbet that my son did not receive because it reportedly contained champagne. That would have been understandable had an alternative been offered, but instead he received nothing at all. The raspberry mousse dessert was similarly disappointing, tasting more like a dense chocolate pastry than a refined dessert course.

While not the restaurant’s fault, the atmosphere was further diminished by nearby diners who were not dressed appropriately for a fixed-menu New Year’s Eve event, including persistent complaints about a menu that was clearly advertised in advance.

In short, while the food was very good, the restaurant lacked the attention to detail, pacing, and polish expected for a special New Year’s Eve dinner. The atmosphere and service simply did not match the quality of the cuisine.

Food and service were excellent. We got the strip steaks which I’d highly recommend. Also nice that it comes with two sides. Good bourbon selection as well.

Saturday evening dinner. The food was very good as was the service. The environment was the worst experience I have ever had. There was a wedding reception in progress when we arrived. The DJ was located on the wall by thei restaurant. When the music started part way through our meal, it was so loud you could only lip read what others at our table were saying!! The bass was so loud that you could feel the vibrations in the chairs and the table. I did speak to a manager following dinner. She was polite and apologized but said there was nothing she could do. I appreciate that the Reeds is designed for various simultaneous functions but we all pay to go there and it was outrageous! It was an auditory assault and we will not be back any time soon and will remember to ask if there is a wedding planned for the night we would like to dine.

Great cocktails, outstanding music [with football in the background] and friendly service; the Sax was memorable, and on a Sunday evening in November!

I was a little hesitant to come here based on some of the Google reviews, but I was not disappointed one bit. The service, the drinks, and the food were top notch. Every part of our meal from start to finish was delicious, and worth the price we paid. The only downfall is that there was a wedding in the room next door and a lot of the noise trickled into the restaurant; but that definitely wouldn’t stop me from coming back again!
