This was our first meal in Ipswich and did not disappoint. Clearly a loved local staple, everyone knows each other, but was an extremely friendly environment. The food here is to die for!!! Clam chowder was simply incredible – so meaty and filling. French fries are also a must.

Had a quick stop here for a late lunch. Found parking fairly easily on the street. The staff was friendly. They had a specials menu that she asked if we wanted to wait for. Ordered the fish sandwich and the seafood chowder.
For dessert we had the apple crisp with ice cream. Will definitely stop by again if we’re in the area.

I knew I wanted to visit here after seeing other reviews and I’m so glad we did! The food was excellent! Huge portions and great tasting! Best fish sandwich I’ve had in a while. They have a chalk menu board of specials that include sandwiches for a decent price at around $15 a plate. The tartar sauce was great! Service was great and nice selection of on tap beer. They only take cash. An ATM is on site or there is a bank down the street. Eat here if in the area. I will if I am ever again.

I go for the seafood (fried clams or scallops). Downside, you can’t get a combination clam/scallop dinner, but either choice is excellent. I order my choice with just onion rings; both the seafood and onion rings are not at all greasy. The seafood platters are delicious, best in the area!

When in Ipswich we used to go to the other unnamed places for our fixin of fried belly clams til someone at a market basket told us of the pub and since that time 15+ years ago we don’t go anywhere else except here! If we lived in the general area this would definitely be our go-to comfort place. Vibes of your friendly neighborhood hangout with great food. They even have a popcorn machine in the corner of the bar! It’s cash only so come prepared. Also used to bring our fur grand pup but no longer which cuts down on our frequency…

Choate is an institution! Not fancy and it can be hard to get a seat since it’s tiny but worth the wait. The food is top notch and plentiful. Be advised it’s CASH ONLY and some stuff is pretty pricey.
