This was our 2nd visit, its been maybe a year since last time? This visit we had a hankering for some BBQ.
I’d like to speak to the added charges and the food. We both got the 3 meat BBQ sampler dinners for $20, my husband caught the fine print for the $3 upcharge for brisket which I missed. I had the hickory smoked sausage, the brisket and pulled pork. Husband got ribs, brisket and sausage. We both liked the baked beans, although I had a couple pieces of soft fat bits in mine (its a texture thing for me). I saw there was a sausage sampler appetizer that included a golden nc sauce and horseradish sauce. Because I got the sausage in the 3 meat BBQ sampler dinner I asked if I could have some of the NC sauce and horseradish sauce to try. The NC sauce was indeed tasty but had I known the horseradish was just plain horseradish I would NOT have gotten it, I was expecting something like horseradish sauce you would have with prime rib mixed with mayo.
What I did NOT expect was to be charged .50 cents each for both small cups of the sauce and plain horseradish. Now 50 cents x2 isn’t a big deal but we were not told we would be charged for condiments and only noticed after paying. Also the meal came with 2 “Signature sides” and garlic toast. We were asked if we wanted garlic toast or corn bread we both asked for the cornbread. A regular muffin sized roll. Honestly tasted like boxed Jiffy cornbread mix nothing special. BUT then I see we got charged an extra $1.00 for cornbread? I see cornbread as interchangeable with a garlic toast not as a sidedish like a salad or vegetable seriously? Looking at the menu online, which mind you was not the menu in hand when we were ordering, it says next to the Beer battered dinners they offer 2 signature sides & garlic toast, then in parentheses “sub cornbread for $1 more”. It doesnt say that under the BBQ dinners caption or the sampler description and I wasn’t looking to get a beer battered dinner so how should I know about cornbread being an extra $1 upgrade?
The coleslaw while fine tastes and looks exactly like KFC cole slaw.
Our brisket slices were on the fatty side and mine did not even have any seared crust/bark.
The portion of pulled bbq was already disappointingly small but smaller still when I pulled off a thick layer of fat underneath when I packed the rest to go. There wasn’t a good smoked flavor to the meat and made me think of a boiled corned beef rather than brisket.
We paid the bill took what we had for leftovers but I stopped to look at the menu/prices at the hostess stand where my husband pointed out to me the $3 brisket upcharge I missed. That much upcharge for 3 small-3 1/2 inch slices of fatty brisket? (see pic). I had a polite conversation with the hostess to inquire about the cornbread upcharges but saying that “it’s been that way ever since I started working here” did not seem to be a great reason for me.
I would suggest first off just offer the corn bread or the garlic bread no need to upcharge for corn bread and it cuts the confusion. Cracker barrel doesn’t charge more whether you get corn bread or biscuits.
Second if you’re gonna upcharge on so many different things like sauces, cornbread and the meat, you really need to have the servers saying or pointing that out aggressively. Servers deal with enough thankless, rude, impatient customers, I’m not one of those. I would rather be aware of the upcharges from my server than feel like I’m getting swindled with extra charges that are not clearly written out in the menu.
Oh and the fact that I have this amount of leftovers doesn’t mean the proportions aren’t small as I said, I can’t eat very much at all in a sitting due to surgery. Other restaurants I can come home with 75% of my meal left.

Updated review on 2nd visit. The last one was extremely detailed and management actually responded to any issues I mentioned, so extra points for that. This review I’ll keep short and sweet.

I still recommend this place! Stopped in on a Friday night, and hour before close and they still happily sat us. Food both times was hot and absolutely delicious. Prices are very fair considering portion and quality. Staff was friendly and efficient. This place should be hopping and deserves more business. Check them out if you’re in town.

NOT GOOD
Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were surprised to find it completely empty not a single customer in sight. (Photos to follow for reference.) Despite this, it took several minutes before anyone came to greet our table. Once we were finally seated, it was at least another 10 minutes before we received our drinks, followed by an extended delay before anyone took our food order.

Shockingly, it took nearly 45 plus minutes for our food to arrive. Given the complete lack of other patrons, this was unacceptable. Even more frustrating when the food did come, it was cold. As we were already quite hungry and had waited so long, we decided to eat it regardless.

When one of us politely requested the check, a to-go box, and asked to speak with a manager regarding the excessive wait time, things escalated quickly. Instead of addressing the concern professionally, someone from the kitchen staff not a manager approached and proceeded to speak in a highly disrespectful and inappropriate manner…. What made this worse was that nearby waitstaff laughed at what was said, apparently finding the unprofessional behavior amusing.

This experience was not just disappointing it was deeply upsetting. No customer, especially a woman simply trying to enjoy a meal, should ever leave an establishment feeling disrespected, diminished, or in tears.

This was our first and last visit to this restaurant. Morgantown has other barbecue options I strongly recommend trying those instead. This establishment needs to take a serious look at its staff behavior, management presence, and basic customer service standards.

My Wife and I really enjoyed this Restaurant as the food, atmosphere and staff were all very good.
My Wife had the Cheese Steak sandwich with a Baked Potato which she absolutely enjoyed. I had the Chopped Pork BBQ dinner with baked beans, cole slaw and cornbread which I did enjoy with the exception of the Pork which had a great smoky taste and was well cooked but was so full of fat it made it less enjoyable to eat. This may have just been a one off thing so I am going to give them the benefit of doubt plus I am from Eastern NC so I am just a little picky when it comes to BBQ.
All in all a very good dinner and a reasonable price range.

My wife and I were in the area and decided to try something new. We were pleasantly surprised the restaurant was not very busy. The staff were extremely attentive. No wait for a seat. We sat on the terrace outside. We had a starter the pickle chips. They were amazing. We elected to order the smoking J’s feast. It was huge. The food that was meant to be hot was hot. The food that was supposed to be cold was cold. The cornbread was good. The macaroni and cheese was good. The broccoli salad was good. The ribs were great. The brisket was tender and tasty. And the pulled pork was very good. Parking was free, which is always nice. Our server did a great job making sure if we needed something we were taking care of. When it was time for the bill, she brought us some boxes. We loaded up enough for a picnic another day.

Every time we come to Morgantown to go to Mon General, which has been frequently lately, we will stop here. We love the choices on the menu. They have an extensive bar with lots of creative options, even bourbon slushies. The staff girls have always been nice to us. My favorite is the taco dinner. You can choose all three different tacos in the order. (Pulled pork, brisket, and fish.) The place is clean and nice. We go at odd hours but it is not crowded. It is a really nice place to stop for lunch or dinner. It’s kind of become our place when we need to meet up in Morgantown.

I love pork bbq and Smokin’ J’s didn’t disappoint. Nicely pit q’d and generous servings. Small cornbread muffins were ok but not worth the upcharge. Coleslaw was good and generous quantity and worth the upcharge. Sauces were good as well and Free. Watch for upcharges. Paper towels provided but few napkins. This could be an expensive restaurant but with careful planning can be very reasonable. Looks to be great for group parties. Nurses working nights like it for end of shift mornings food and alcoholic drinks. Drink happy hour specials. Very friendly staff.

I’ve eaten here over a dozen times now so here’s what to expect.

The food is a bit pricey so don’t come here on a budget. The menu is misleading in a few areas and you can get an upcharge on your meal if you don’t read the fine print carefully.

More often than not the brisket comes out of the kitchen cold. It seems if you go early in the morning the food tends to be warm but come around dinner time and it’s a gamble whether the food is piping hot or not. The macncheese and baked beans and garlic bread were all cold on my last visit. The brisket was mildly warm so that’s passable I suppose. The fries were piping hot and crispy this time so that’s a plus.

Overall the food can be tasty here but there’s no consistency in the quality and the temperature so it really feels like a gamble.

Came on a Monday night after work and the place was very quiet, which isnt really a problem. Was planning on getting a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on the side and then saw the Sloppy J. Great combo. Portion size was comfortable (small enough to allow 2 beers and a dessert).
