After exploring the Bethlehem Christmas Market, my wife and I were craving some German comfort food, so we decided to stop in at Dunderbak’s Market Café. It’s a unique little spot tucked inside a shopping mall—not a standalone restaurant—but still has a neat kind of vibe once you step inside.
The staff was super friendly, and the menu was much broader than expected. While it’s described as German-American cuisine, you’ll find everything from kielbasa and pierogies to quesadillas and even a Bavarian Angus beef burger. Definitely a blended menu with something for everyone.
My wife enjoyed all of her food, and mine was a bit of a mixed experience. I ordered the Jägerschnitzel with Spätzle.
• The Jägerschnitzel itself was decent—ok flavor, just on the smaller side.
• The Spätzle, unfortunately, missed the mark. It lacked flavor and was extremely greasy, to the point where there was a noticeable puddle of oil on the plate after scraping it aside was a little off-putting.
That said, considering this is a mall restaurant and not a traditional Gasthaus like the ones I enjoyed during my five years living in Germany, my expectations weren’t sky-high. The overall dish was a 50/50 experience, but not bad enough to keep me from returning.
Would I come back? Sure.
There are plenty of other menu items that looked great, and I’d definitely give the place another try. If you’re in the area, want a friendly atmosphere, and are looking for a quick bite with some German-inspired options, this is a decent stop—and certainly better than several other spots nearby.
This place is just about everything a fine dining experience should be.
-Our server Jennifer V did a fantastic job. She checked on us more than once to make sure we were okay and didn’t need anything.
-The food was high quality. It didn’t taste like it cost $150/dish but it was right-off-the-grill hot and plenty flavorful.
-The atmosphere is super cute, old-fashioned, and unique.
-They didn’t play annoying pop music or anything in the background lol.
-Not to mention the prices are pretty reasonable especially for 2023. For example a lot of other restaurants nowadays are well, well over $10 for appetizers.
I’ll include examples in the pictures, as well as the menu w/prices.
We got up and left we were willing to pay for our appetizer , however they covered it .
It’s not only gross but dangerous . All I was thinking about what’s happening in the kitchen. Are mice running all over the food ? We just couldn’t stay after that . Very unfortunate .
