Great spot, vibes, and food! I’ve been coming to El Sancho Tex Mex BBQ for over 5 years and counting! Danny and the team serve delicious food and great energy. I’ve introduce the establishment and food to friends and work peers; they also compliment the service and food. The El Sancho team was even able to work with one of my vegan friends to customize the meal, which meant a lot to me.

Thank you Danny and team for making breakfast great again!

El Sancho Tex Mex BBQ: A Texas Monthly Top 100 Surprise Hiding Behind the Coffee Shop
Finding true Texas barbecue glory in an unexpected place is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and that’s exactly what happened when I pulled up to this humble food truck. Tucked away in a lot behind a local coffee shop, this operation specializing in breakfast tacos and smoked meat by the pound is more than just a roadside stop—it’s a bona fide culinary experience, holding a coveted spot on the Texas Monthly Top 100 BBQ Awards list. This isn’t your typical street taco joint; it’s a full-on, unique blend of Texas smoking tradition and vibrant Mexican flavor.

The Smoked Meats: Quality Beyond Expectation

The foundation of any great BBQ joint is its meat, and here, the quality is exceptional.

• Brisket: Simply put, wow. I never expected a breakfast taco food truck to serve such a delicious slice of brisket. It boasted a phenomenal, peppery Texas bark that crackled with flavor, and the meat itself was perfectly rendered, staying consistently nice and moist throughout. It was a flawless execution of smoked beef.

• Pork Belly: The pork belly was delightful—tender, rich, and packed with great flavor. It had a wonderful depth, though I noted it was just slightly on the dry side, preventing it from achieving perfection. Still, a delicious, high-quality offering.
The Tacos: Full-Fledged Adult Fare
The genius of this spot is how they integrate their exceptional smoked meats into what they call a “Texas Mexican Taco culinary experience.” The tortillas are incredibly fresh, and the combinations are unique and satisfying.

• The El Rey Taco: This is the ultimate breakfast champion. It layers that incredible, moist brisket with chilaquiles verdes, cheese, creamy avocado, fresh cilantro, and a perfectly fried egg. What a combination! It struck just the right balance of richness and expected spice. I particularly appreciated the decision to include a full slice of brisket rather than chopped or shredded meat—a clear sign of quality and respect for the smokehouse star.

• Taco de Chicharron: This taco elevates the pork belly experience, combining it with avocado, bright pickled onions, cilantro, crispy pork rind, and a kick of jalapeños. The harmony of flavors was masterful. This is precisely what a great Mexican-Texas fusion taco should taste like. With large, thick pieces of pork belly filling the seven-inch tortilla, this is absolutely not a street taco; it’s a full-fledged, adult taco experience built for maximum impact.

The Verdict

What a super surprise this place turned out to be. The dedication to quality, from the perfectly smoked brisket to the thoughtful, layered flavor combinations in the specialty tacos, is evident in every bite. The staff were also incredibly friendly, offering great food suggestions that proved spot-on. If you find yourself in the area, a visit to this unassuming food truck is definitely recommended for a unique and top-tier Texas BBQ and taco mashup.

Amazing! I’m from San Antonio so I love trying new places in the Valley each time I come and this place hit the spot. Great, tender and juice brisket and thick cuts of meat (takes up half tortilla). We ordered a lot thinking they would be small but to our surprise “No” had to take half the food with us. Highly recommend for anyone to try. On top of that outstanding customer service and warm friendly place.

Ok. This is my favorite breakfast place in the valley. Everything here is of high quality- the brisket is usually moist and flavorful, the eggs are runny, salsas are great, barbacoa might be the best Ive had, potatos are good, and the tortillas are good. Cheese is cheese, though.

Every plate i’ve had is good, and I’ve had it all. I got favorites though.

Plus, it’s next to Jitterz coffee co, AND I am a bit of a coffee fan/lover myself. You can eat in Jitterz or out of it, both are good.

Owners are nice and the other employees are great too. Shout out to Sofia!

Overall, it is a 5/5. Love this place and will keep going for a long while.

Delicious! A great fusion of BBQ and Mexican! The food truck was behind the coffee shop, and we were able to order a drink and sit inside and they brought the food to us. There was also outdoor seating. Everyone was so friendly. Definitely go if you are in Mission!

Tried the brisket tacos two different styles. Brisket sausage egg and cheese, the brisket was a thick cut but the brisket was dry. The Brisket, bacon, potato with salsa and egg taco also had dry brisket. At 12.50 a taco only cash/apps to pay only. An extra tortilla should be offered it is loaded but difficult to eat as it breaks up easy.

This is by far my favorite Tex Mex taco place in the RGV! The owners are friendly, and the food is always tasty (and very filling). I appreciate how the owners – Ale and Danny – are welcoming, accommodating, and are willing to strike up warm conversations with customers to get to know them better. Moreover, though the tacos are on the pricier end (prices starting at around $10-11), one taco fills me up for two meals – I’ve heard this is the case for other friends that I’ve taken to El Sancho. The tacos are usually stuffed with additional sides and garnishes, such as cheese, egg, avocado, or cilantro – they’ve never skimped out on their food even with the current inflation. Thank you for the great food and experiences these past few years, Ale and Danny!

Delicious breakfast!

This place has high quality meat and high quality cookers too.

I do believe this place is worthy of trying and worthy of coming back. I’ve read the reviews and a lot of people call it “the best brisket in the valley” I would say they are not wrong. Well paired with other foods. though it comes at a price.

The pork belly taco, literally one, goes for 7ish dollars. But I love it…Mouthwatering. But expensive.

They also have more than brisket and I believe the chilaquiles and the pork belly are the ones to not miss.

The chilaquiles can come with brisket. They were crispy and well portioned

I do recommend going to this place at least once but I’m sure you’ll be back eventually

‼️Sadly, they used the worst type of to go food plates… styrofoam. Baaaad! I posted pictures of all the trash you’ll leave behind and from ordering here. I hope they make a change for good for something compostable.

El Sancho is outstanding. They’re a creative approach to BBQ breakfast tacos and sandwiches that you just won’t find anywhere else. The tacos are generously stuffed and well thought out and unique flavor combinations. The sandwiches are served on biscuits homemade at the local bakery next door. What’s really impressive is that the BBQ: brisket, pulled pork, pork belly, is top notch and can stand alone with some of the best in the state. El Sancho receives extra points for being set up behind Jitterz Coffee, serving up some of the best locally roasted coffee in the state and easily the best in the RGV.

Had some amazing BBQ breakfast tacos at El Sancho with my cousin. We split a couple to try more, and everything was delicious. Tender brisket, fresh toppings, perfectly cooked egg, and soft tortillas. Perfect mix of Tex-Mex and BBQ!
