Overall, we enjoyed our meal at Squid Shack again in 2026, visiting for the first time since 2007. However, it was somewhat disappointing to see no improvement in the rather pale interior over this period. Nonetheless, it still offers the best view of the Emu Point boat ramp and a group of friendly pelicans.
The red emperor fillet in the fisherman’s basket was fresh, fried to perfection, and very tasty. The fish ball was surprisingly good, with a perfectly crisp batter and a fresh, moist interior, even though it was made from a different type of fish. The squid rings and prawns were good as well. However, the crab stick and chips were only average.

We ordered take away squid & chips (panky & tempura). 8 squid rings each. $32 for both. Table available with vinegar, salt, etc.
Squid was so tender and chips were fresh and tasted delicious.

We ordered for 4 people and the staff were friendly enough but unfortunately the food was practically inedible. The squid & fish was so overcooked in old oil that we gave up and had to throw it away. Such a tragedy when a fisherman’s basket is $36 and you can’t even eat it. I’ve eaten fish and chips everywhere and this is the worst I’ve had in memory I’m sorry to say. You can see in the attached photo the squid was so overcooked it was like rubber.

Great staff fresh fish not frozen. Great range of salad, dessert, icecream. Fun family dining in a rustic shed with character. View over bay is wonderful and a grass area for kids to play near boat ramps. Highly recommend.

First of all the staff were very friendly and quick with ordering – no complaints there.
The food was absolutely atrocious.
Squid was small and as dry as jerky.
Chips were sub par.
Crab sticks tasted horrible, dry and sour.
Pineapple fritters also had a sour taste and were very unpleasant – kids wouldnt even eat them.
Very disappointing overall. We won’t be back again.

Oh dear this place needs some love and attention. Firstly though staff were friendly but thats as far as it went.
We ordered the panko crumbed calamari & chips and the tempura squid and chips. Both over cooked and burnt. Sorry too the worst chips we’ve ever tasted and all just little bits n pieces, I didnt know chips could taste that bad. We threw out the chips and had to remove the panko crumb and tempura batter from the squid to even attempt to eat the thin chewy tough squid underneath.
The place its self was dirty and cold even with a woodfire burning. The netting hanging from ceiling was full of dust and cob webs. The place was dark and uninviting.
Its in a fabulous spot! It just seriously needs some pride shown by the owners.
But like everything you need to try it and make up your mind, maybe we just went on a bad day.

We found The Squid Shack whilst exploring Albany, but is was closed that day, so we had to miss out!
Looks like a great “authentic” place, so we will plan better next time!
