This restaurant has been unchanged since the 70’s. It’s like stepping back in time with the same decor intact all these years and the original low counter. The food is very basic diner and so very good. Our eggs were cooked perfectly. We’ll definitely go again the next time we are in the area.

My buddy paul brought me to grandma’s kitchen on Jan. 3rd. 2026.
I had a great experience at this establishment and our waitress Sylvia was very knowledgeable and awesome conversationalist!

We stopped by Grandma’s Kitchen in Rochester and really enjoyed our meal. I ordered the Grandma’s Omelette and my husband had the Club Sandwich. Both dishes came out fast, hot, and were very good. I also tried the chocolate graham cracker pie. It was delicious and mostly whipped cream with a graham cracker base. The flavor and texture worked well together. Great spot for a casual and satisfying meal.

We sat ourselves and were served water. After that the waitress passed by us many times without stopping. Served food to other tables. We were COMPLETELY ignored. Finally, had enough. Got up to leave. She looked up and said “Oh you are out of time”. And that was it. No hospitality whatsoever. Not the kind of local business Rochester needs. On another note, menu needs to state food sourcing – are THEY sourcing locally? I didn’t see anything.

For a place called Grandma’s I was expecting something better.

We’ll start with the good. The staff was friendly and attentive and it place looked like a nice diner. It was clean and although the place was full, it wasn’t noisy or distracting.

But we didn’t go there to meet the staff or be in a room. We were there to eat. That’s where the problems start.

To be clear, nothing was disgusting or rancid. It was all edible food. It was just extremely subpar. To start, we got coffee. Honestly it was just coffee flavored water that was lying about being coffee.

The best part of the meal were the eggs. I ordered mine over medium. The best thing I can say about them is that they were indeed eggs that were cooked to just above over medium but not too above that it ruined them.

The thing that saved the bacon was that it tasted like bacon. It was thin and cooked right. Nothing to write home about.

The hashed browns tasted like they were previously frozen. Again, not disgusting, just not good.

The pancakes, something any diner should have no problem with, had problems. They were indeed big and fluffy but they weren’t thoroughly cooked. The flavor was there but after a couple of chews it felt like you were chewing on batter. It had the consistency of peanut butter. Not a fun experience.

The syrup was like hot syrup flavored water. You’d think it would help with the weird batter flavored pancakes, but it did not.

All in all this was not a good experience. To top it off, I paid over $50 for this atrocity. This really felt like I went to a friend’s grandma’s house in the 80s and she lived in the middle of a food desert and tried to feed us with as much fake, albeit edible, food she bought at a box store.

I didn’t give this place 1 star because they tried. Everything else about this place was okay. I wouldn’t tell people to avoid this place like the plague. If you want over priced food that isn’t that great then by all means swing on by. You will be fed. And you will pay a lot of money for it.

For a place called Grandma’s I’m expecting everything to be cooked in lard, to have real maple syrup, fresh butter, and portions of food that is supposed to remind you that your grandma is trying to overfeed you because oh honey, you need to eat more.

Honestly, next time I’ll just go to a Denny’s. You should do the same.

Grandma’s kitchen truly brought back memories of what diners used to be like with my grandparents growing up! The decor is fun and takes you back. It has a lot of character inside and the layout is spot on for what diners were like back in another era. Staff greet you you with a smile and a warm welcome. I came here with my bestie for brunch and honestly this place is far better than Perkins, baker’s square and if I had to pick say, between this or Cheap Charlie’s….man I think it depends on what you order but both are really really good! The pancakes were fluffy and the hash browns and bacon were cooked perfectly. We were seated where the stools are and could literally see the cooks making everything. The pricing is well worth the amount of food you get!
4 star for atmosphere just because when it’s a full house, there’s not much noise cancelling panels. It’s all like an open floor plan which can be very loud for hearing impaired individuals who need to be able to hear conversation within a large group. It was loud when we were there but I think if we had gone at a less busy time it would have been quieter. Otherwise it can be like a loud cafeteria. The location is right next to some shopping places and a nice gift shop inside Hunt Drug. It’s just off Broadway but not directly downtown which makes it much easier to get to. The free parking is a bonus. I definitely recommend trying an early breakfast or brunch here.

Another day I tried the taco salad. It was really good! Much better than chain places. Everything was fresh. The waitress even gave me hot chocolate at a discount since she saw I was cold and shivering a bit. That was very kind and showed her caring skills in hospitality and the service industry. Thank you
