Gibraltars Take on Fish and Chips and Roy’s Fish and Chips …
Reviews
It was the highest rated in the area and we decided to give it a go. I have had better fish & chips in London, Ireland and Vermont – but it was damn tasty for place on a rock in the Iberian Peninsula.
Our food came out quick, it was fresh and the fish was crispy and tasty. The chips were okay but they were fresh and hot. The salad for the gluten free option was decent as well. The service was a bit disjointed but it went from mostly empty to completely packed with a wait in under 15 minutes.
Our service was adequate which is pretty remarkable given how slammed they were. I’d give this a try if you’re in the area and wanted something not typical of the region.
Lots to order on the menu. I got the cod and chips. Big portions provided, but nothing seasoned. Maybe it’s on purpose. I found myself having to use lots of salt and opening numerous cheap ketchup and tartar sauce packages – the ones you’d normally expect to find at a hospital.
I’ve had mushy peas several times before, but here… again, if I closed my eyes, it tasted like nothing.
I wanted to communicate this with the staff but they only spoke Spanish… not sure if that’s normal in Gibraltar (I expected UK English).
I happily ate most of my meal but, I don’t think I’d return anytime soon. I also think there’s a huge opportunity to improve the product.
All I’m saying is walk around and look what the other places are offering before settling for this place.
I understand they’re busy, but the servers would walk by without saying anything. Had to find my own table and work hard to place an order. My food however, came out fast and hot. Just wish it had some flavoring and the expected condiments.
Fish and chips were of good quality (both cod and haddock) .
Batter was just right and fish cooked to perfection.
Good selection of extras – Mushy Peas, Gravy , Curry (tasty) etc.
Restaurant do accepts cards.
It is pricy though, but so is everything in Gibraltar.
Between the three of us, we ordered three beers, two portions of cod and chips, a curry sauce and a gravy. We would have also ordered a small portion of fish and chips for my mum, but these are only permitted for children under ten years.
The fish and chips were cooked nicely and seemed of good quality, but very bland and unseasoned, served without a lemon wedge or tartar. Unfortunately, the curry and gravy provided little extra flavour. The gravy was as thin as you might only imagine on school dinners, and the curry tasted sweet and of not much else, though at least it was thick. Thank goodness for the salt and pepper.
The service was pretty quick, but abrupt and without smiles. I don’t have any experience of Gibraltar pricing, but this seems overpriced for what it is.
