Cuba 1918 is one of those places you walk into and immediately notice the atmosphere. The building itself is over 100 years old and the artwork and interior give it a lot of character. It definitely feels like you stepped into a different era, which I loved.

Now let’s talk about the food. It was… okayish. Not bad, but not something that blew my mind either. It’s on the expensive side and when you’re in Texas, you kind of expect both great flavor and good portions. I wasn’t disappointed, but I also wasn’t as impressed as I expected based on the reviews.

Service was a bit slow — we only ordered a few items but they took longer than expected. Most of the dishes were good and some were actually delicious. But they somehow managed to mess up my omelette… and honestly I’m still wondering how that happens.

I like exploring new flavors and that’s one of the reasons I try different places. Cuba 1918 has charm and history, but it may not be for everyone. For me, it’s a place I’m glad I tried, but probably not my favorite spot in town.

You’d think Cuban food wouldn’t be high on my list considering I don’t like coffee or picked. However, it is one of my favorite cuisines, packed with a ton of flavor. Cuba 1918 is the best spot in SA for Cuban food. Everything was delicious, the service was sincere and the vibe was on point. I enjoyed the restaurant weeks menu. The tostones appetizer was so good I ordered a second round. The chicken main dish was packed with flavor and the black beans were a traditional delight. My only complaint would be the rice is plain, most likely by design as they intend you to mix it with the sauces but I would have liked to see more flavor as a standalone. The meal was finished by a tree leches cake that was just right. I highly recommend making the trek to Southcross to check out Cuba 1918.

Just no.

Where to start? Deeply regretted my decision to come here (with my vegetarian CIL). I found it strange how greasy the small side order of fries were given there were so few of them. My husband ordered the espresso coffee. He said it was not $7 good. He ordered the Cuban sandwich, black beans, and white rice for his meal. He said he hadn’t had that level of bland food in San Antonio in a long time.

My CIL, being vegetarian and her choice to pick this place, she ordered several different sides to have a variety. She said the yucca fries were not seasoned, but they were at least crunchy. The sofrito potatoes were the only vegetables that she said were at least seasoned. She also commented on how bland the small bowl of black beans were as well as the rice.

I had a glance at the food on the table next to us before the waitress came and thought it best to simply order a hamburger with fries. Hamburger was definetly the safe option. The fries, however, greasy…left a film on my tongue. Do yourself a favor, don’t order the tea.

If you are in a wheelchair, then you would find it a challenge to use the bathroom as the toilet is on like a stage/large step. The entry to this place also has different level of steps.

We came on a night that they had live music. Little loud to comfortably have a conversation, but at least it was good.

Nice staff.

Not worth the drive, definetly not worth the price, and wouldn’t recommend to family or friends if I intend on keeping them.

Also, this place is BYOB.

My girlfriend and I have come here twice now and as good as the first time was, the second was even better! The food is amazing. I love Cuban sandwiches and originally I didn’t have any expectations, but Cuba 1918 really knocked it out of the park and blew me away. The young lady who served us (Z to protect her privacy) was wonderful. She was very nice and was attentive without hovering. Finally, Friday night jazz nights are amazing. They get local bands and I really appreciate that.
So to sum up, if you have a hot date on Friday night, or even if you’re just hungry and like live music, give this place a try it’s worth it.

I’m from out of town and heard about this place from a friend in Dallas. It did not disappoint. My boyfriend and I loved the atmosphere—perfect for a romantic date night. There happened to be a private event the night we visited, but we were still seated right away and even received complimentary drinks. The staff was friendly, and they have a small stage for karaoke and when they have musician nights, which adds to the fun vibe. I ordered the Ropa Vieja, a traditional Cuban dish, and it was so good. Highly recommend!

What can I say? It looked good, and the appetizer was good, but the sandwiches were not that good .

I’ve had a great Cuban sandwich, and this was nothing like it. I’ve had regular sandwiches, and they were better than this.

However, the bad part was the music. I like Jazz.. I’ve gone to jazz bars and I enjoyed my time there -this however was not enjoyable -it was torturous. The band looked like it was having fun and that’s great, but you need to make sure the audience is enjoying what you’re putting out there. I love music I love good food – we left early because the food was okay the music was not.

If we go back, I believe it’ll probably be to taste the coffee. I’d like a nice coffee place on the south side, and maybe this will be it.

It will not be my place for a Cuban sandwich.

So my wife and I had dinner for Valentine’s Day; the dim lights, flowers, and live music were a lovely touch, definitely a vibe for a romantic night. We had the Cuban meal and the steak with mash and asparagus, and our appetizers were beets and shrimp. The beets were beautiful in color, roasted to perfection, and the fried capers gave them a nice salty but sweet flavor. Now, to the shrimp – OMG, the crudo with the grilled shrimp was beautiful, and that strawberry cucumber salad on top of the shrimp was perfect; leaving the head on the shrimp gave it that Gulf Coast flavor, beautiful presentation. The Cuban offering was good, but the steak with the Cuban chimichurri was flavorful; the steak was skimpy, but the mash was amazing, with hints of corn and truffles – how does a mom-and-pop place get truffles? 10/10 on food. The dessert was nice. Now, the service – the waitress had no clue about the menu, I felt a little rushed, my food came out before my apps, and then I had a small buffet at my table, it was okay, but just a little overwhelming. The front-of-house staff needs major work. Overall, it was a nice night, the chef and the owner said hello, that was a nice touch, but I was also confused with all the liquor on the counter, it was not offered. Overall experience: food 10, service 4.5. Will I come back? If the food is that fast and good, I’ll be back.

Came here WITH RESERVATIONS for Culinaria Week lunch special. The person who took the reservation failed to tell us the special wasn’t being offered that day because apparently the only cook who knew the recipes was in the hospital???
We decided to have lunch there since we were already there.
He ordered a double Cuban burger that was probably the size of a slider. I ordered a 20$ house special which was the Havana plate (pork) with rice and beans. My food arrived colder than room temperature.
Since there was no restaurant week special we decided to order something off the menu we’d seen online. But those items weren’t available either. They didn’t even have the Cuban sodas.
This was a terrible experience all around. They apologized but didn’t offer anything as an apology.

I haven’t tried the food in this totally cool night spot, yet but I’m certain it’s excellent. Check out the 1950’s Packard parked out back! It’s a nice place.
The building dates from 1918, according to the owner, and has a charming, attractive look inside and out. This is a great place for a romantic date.

Service was good but was expecting cuban or Spanish servers, but the service was very good and attentive. Ordered some coffe of course and it did not fail, just what I would expect from cuban restaurant. The food was on point, ordered the ropa vieja with some tostones and it was delicious. The only negative thing to say is that it was more costly than expected considering it was nowhere near downtown. All in all great food but prices where too high. I’ve had steak diners that cost less than my plate here.
