Passions of Kerala, this is the restaurant i had started to enjoy since almost 20years ago and continuing. They began as a small family restaurant in Gelugor, Penang. Just imagine that when i was dating my wife and now our kids also turn 20 already. Restaurant’s concept are base on Kerala cuisine – South Indian culinary tradition known for its use of coconut, spices, curry leaves, and blended with rich curries adapted to local tastes. Very satisfied with their meals.Recommended to those who wants to eat authentic Indian banana leaf rice meals. Sotong masala, bendi goreng, bittergourd goreng, Fried Fish…. so super delicious. Can’t get enough of it. Curries are also delicious. Highly recommended!

Finally discovered a place serving delicious authentic South Indian meals in a very clean and pleasant environment, with staff providing prompt and efficient service at reasonable prices.
It’s worth mentioning that , this local Malaysian Indian meal, unlike Kerala cuisine, is a must-try.

Passions of Kerala began as a small family sundry store in Gelugor, Penang. Over time, it evolved into a full-fledged restaurant serving traditional South Indian cuisine.

The restaurant’s concept and menu are rooted in Kerala cuisine — a South Indian culinary tradition known for its use of coconut, spices, curry leaves, and rich curries — adapted to local Penang tastes; this is their 2nd restaurant in Penang.

Founded by Gary Nair, with recipes originating from the Nair family’s grandmother in Kerala, the restaurant is most known for their Banana Leaf Rice.

Went for a small birthday dinner at this place. Banana leaf meal was decent and the staff were accommodating.
Taste of the food was good however their rasam was extremely sour as they clearly added too much of tamarind.
Other than that, it was overall a pleasant experience

We had a family dinner here in Dec 2025, the food is really good, staff are very friendly and professional and food prices are very reasonable.

Highly recommended to those who wants to eat authentic Indian banana leaf rice meals.
They went extra mile to prepare free payasam although payasam is only served during Friday lunch hour.

Very satisfied with the meals.

Absolutely satisfying meal! I had the banana leaf tomato rice set with the mutton varuval. The rice was flavourful and good enough to eat by itself. But I recommend having it with the chicken/fish curry and accompanying vegetables sides, which brings the rice to a whole new level! The mutton just melts in the mouth in heavenly spiced flavours. Finishing the meal with a teh tarik (pulled tea) is always a winner!

Hi, just wanted to share some honest feedback. Unfortunately, the overall taste of the food was quite disappointing. The *ayam bawang* was especially unsatisfactory, and both the prawn sambal and chicken sambal were equally lacking in flavour. However, we do appreciate that the vegetable dishes were well-prepared and tasted good. Hope this helps improve the food quality moving forward.

The food was below expectations and did not reflect the passion or authenticity of Kerala cuisine. It felt more like a generic Indian restaurant rather than something distinctive.

The bigger issue was the service. The person taking the order was rude and did not make any effort to understand customer needs, especially for vegetarian customers. This lack of awareness and respect is unacceptable.

Given that the restaurant is located in a popular and well-known area like New World Park Penang, the standards should be much higher. Customers are paying for their meals, not eating for free, and deserve to be treated with basic courtesy and respect including those who choose vegetarian options.

The restaurant seriously needs to improve both customer service and food quality.

Old brand name that has been consistent in the quality of their dishes. Go to place for banana leaf rice. Went twice this week itself, is it overkill? No it’s not! Hahaha. Service is fast and there’s always room for seats! Sotong goreng, bendi goreng, bittergourd goreng, fish fry…. so super delicious. Goreng dishes has a light and super crunchy batter. Can’t get enough of it. Curries are also delicious. Nothing has gone wrong for me here. Highly recommended!
