Back in 1987 we needed a place to go. A place to drink good coffee and watch the world go by. A place where good food was homemade and where the desserts were fresh. We decided to buy and renovate a derelict building on old Route 66 in Nob Hill. Along the way we started a scratch bakery, cooked a lot of good food, learned to roast coffee beans and got so busy that we had to build more cafes. Today, despite a few more locations, a name change, and 350 more employees, we are still a small, local company that serves up community from scratch every day.
Relaxed cafe chain serving globally influenced American fare, including all-day breakfast.

I just ate a delicious eclare as big as my face in their patio dining area! The cashier answered all my questions and took my order as soon as my look of contemplation changed to decision. An employee opened the door to assist me outside, as I was dining alone and was in high heels. I found a great spot on the patio and got to be entertained by an adorable Aussie pup that was joining her owners in the pet-friendly area. (Dog watering station provided!) The staff quickly got a to-go cup for the remainder of my beverage and I left with a satisfied sweet tooth. Thanks for making it a great experience. I’ll be back with friends.

Flying Star Cafe remains one of my favorites when visiting the area. Although their pricing on their deserts remains a mystery to me as they are extremely expensive. I have worked in a pastry shop for many years and don not understand how they can justify those very high prices for the deserts.
However, their meals and coffee remain well priced, and outstanding in quality! The menu is well thought out, plated well, and unique for the area. To add to this the staff is wonderful, and I have not had a bad experience there.
Overall, I would not hesitate to eat there again on the main menu, but still hesitate to on their overpriced deserts as the quality and size cannot justify their prices.

This was the perfect breakfast stop before heading back home. As soon as you walk in, you’ll find the menu conveniently displayed at the entrance so you can decide what to order before reaching the counter. The setup has a charming bakery-style café vibe with plenty of seating, a self-serve coffee station, and large open windows that let you enjoy the view while you eat. The atmosphere feels cozy and relaxing—just what you need to start your day or take a break from traveling. The food was delicious, fresh, and full of comforting flavors. Overall, a wonderful little stop that made our morning feel calm and enjoyable before getting back on the road.

We had lunch here after giving up at old town square which was packed. An interesting establishment in a strip mall on the “buffy” side of town.
We ordered at the counter and the food was delivered to the table.
We had egg salad sammy, fish & chips and stewpot chicken. Sides of eclairs, cookies and apple pie.
Apologies for the not fast enough photos. We were hungry.
Unfortunately the indoor dining was open to the outdoors on both ends. Because of that we were bothered by flies. Not our idea of indoor dining but the food was excellent.

I ordered the SW bennie, which i love, during a busy sunday brunch. my bennie came to me super cold, and i went up to tell the wonderful server what happened. i wasn’t expecting them to remake it because they were busy, i asked if they could microwave it for me. the server was so kind and offered to remake it, it came out fast and was so much warmer!! thank you

Food is expensive, but consistently not great. Nice place to meet friends with dogs out on the patio. The coffee isn’t great either, so stick with some sencha or early grey tea and a cookie. The only meal that I like there is unfortunately seasonal: the pilgrim’s feast — a thanksgiving themed meal.

This place is perfect for brunch! Loved the giant eclair, each bite is like, one eclair and the thing is donut sized. They didn’t skimp on the egg on my sandwich either! The avocado toast is yummy too.

The food was absolutely delicious, with fresh flavors and great presentation. While the prices are a bit on the expensive side, the overall quality and ambiance make it worth it.
