Five Star Seafood Restaurant: A Dim Sum Delight in San Gabriel
I love a good old fashioned pushcart dimsum and @fivestar.seafood …
Five star seafood restaurant reopened at Hilton hotel – Facebook
Reviews
The service here was very good, they were quick and attentive. I also liked the fact that they asked other team members for help if they were not sure of something instead of blowing you off like they didn’t understand what you wanted.
The lunch hour here was packed, which is always a great sign. Looking forward to more visits to this restaurant.
Most ladies don’t speak English well but are happy to lift up the dishes so you can see what they are peddling. The wait is pretty short even on a Sunday 11am bc the ballroom is HUGE and fits so many tables.
Also bc the room is so cavernous it’s not that noisy even though so many people are in it. There is zero ambience but you don’t come for vibes. You come for a deal and great dim sum.
If they also offered boba teas or more varied sweet options I’d give them five stars.
First, despite agreeing to start dinner at 7:30 PM, we weren’t seated until 7:50 because the previous party hadn’t left. For a private room booking, that’s unacceptable.
Second, our server repeatedly judged our order, saying we were ordering “too much,” even though there was a $1,200 minimum spend. He kept pushing us to replace multiple smaller dishes with one expensive dish to “reduce the kitchen’s workload,” which felt inappropriate and uncomfortable.
Worst of all, five dishes we explicitly ordered were removed without telling us. When we asked, the server said he didn’t place them because we had already hit the minimum and thought we wouldn’t finish the food. By then, the kitchen had closed, so we couldn’t reorder.
I’ve been a loyal customer for over four years, but this was my first time booking a private room. The lack of professionalism and respect was shocking. Unfortunately, I won’t be returning.
Located inside the 99 Ranch plaza.
Plenty of free self parking.
The restaurant is located at the top floor. The plaza is undergoing much needed renovation.
The host was welcoming and we were quickly seated. The waiter was very friendly, and made recommendations.
It’s a very large restaurant. Great for groups. It can be sectioned off to accommodate private parties or weddings.
The food was good but for the price I think it could be better. Especially with so much competition from other near by restaurants.
This is a top-tier destination for traditional dim sum in Los Angeles. Based on many visits, here’s a practical guide to the experience.
The System:
This is a push-cart-style restaurant. Carts with different items circulate the room, and you choose what you want as they pass. This is authentic but means you may have to wait for your favorites to come around.
What to Expect:
* The Wait: There is almost always a long line, even on a Wednesday afternoon. Plan accordingly.
* The Atmosphere: Loud, crowded, and chaotic in the best way possible. It’s a classic large-scale Chinese restaurant.
* The Service: Efficient and to-the-point. Don’t expect smiles; expect to get your food and be on your way.
Food Recommendations:
* Must-Get: The Siu Mai (tender and juicy) and the Beef Chow Fun (noodles have great texture, can be customized – I usually get it without bean sprouts).
* Good: The Har Gow is tasty, though be aware the wrapper is not translucent thin (my preference but you may like it thicker)
Bottom Line: For arguably the most authentic push-cart dim sum experience in LA, with excellent food to back it up, this place is a 4.5/5 star winner.
The restaurant is usually very busy on the weekends for dim sum breakfast, and we can get a table easier at dinner time. The service is matched with most Chinese restaurants in the area. The food is delicious. I’m coming again next time when I’m in Los Angeles.
