We’re a locally owned and operated family restaurant serving Portage and the surrounding communities over 10 years. Great food, and usually a great experience. This time we had been sat for 25min and still had no service. Party of 5 so kinda hard to miss us. Each server made eycontact and had ventured to the host stand. The gentleman who wears the collared shirt thats never tucked in made eye contact and ventured to the host stand. Still no one even came up to greet us at all. We were sat by both hostess. Also not even that busy. Time for a break and find a new sushi spot for awhile.

A great experience at the hibachi grill. Food was exceptional. The meal was enough for two people. Prices were reasonable. One recommendation…add a rail on the chairs in the front to put your feet on. Short legged people’s legs dangle, uncomfortable on your back. Thank you.

Upon arrival with my date tonight I had a wonderful night having sake and having a roll called atomic bomb.
I had a great time and the atmosphere was amazing the service was slightly slow but that’s because there were a lot of people that night. The third picture was previous before tonight and I wanted to post that as well.
Food was amazing I had a great time and the waitress was very polite and courteous.
I will definitely be coming back again soon and I always try a new roll every time I pay a visit to the restaurant, the best sushi restaurant here in town!

The sushi and food from the kitchen was OK. Their specialty sushi rolls need more flavor. It seems they make all of them with the same 4 or 5 ingredients. No real flavor explosions or differences in texture between most of them.
The salad was excellent with the meal although the tomato was bland and dry. The rest of the salad ingredients were good.
Overall, the food was good and the service was adequate. Neither was extraordinary but since they are convenient, we will probably visit again.

Our favorite sushi place in town as its a great balance of good food, value and fantastic service. I only thought to leave a review because our server tonight, Anea, is phenomenal!!!!

Hands down the best sushi in Kalamazoo! We are fish people. We are raw fish people. And whether or not we have a special occasion to celebrate, going to Sakura is the special occasion worth celebrating!
We love going for lunch during the week because of their amazing lunch specials! (Not available on Sundays) Our favorite it the Eel Avocado roll. The portion and price cannot be beat! And it’s nice to start of with a cup of the miso soup, which is light, tasty, and the perfect temperature.
We always get the Sushi Deluxe because we love their nigiri. The Yellowtail, Escolar, and Salmon have been fan-effing-tastic every time! The service is always good. We always leave happy and satisfied.
On our last visit we tried their special Green Goddess roll. I highly recommend it, especially to those who like a little spice, and maybe want to branch out from tempura and California rolls and start trying the raw stuff. It has a fantastic crunch from the jalapeño! Next time would get it without the spicy mayo. Not because of spice, it just distracted from the fish a little, which as you know, we love.
Highly recommend and will be back again soon!

Well 3 Stars means I will try this place again. However I am giving them an extra star due to the fact that I ordered something that is not Sakura’s forte. I ordered an appetizer and side of fried rice. Neither were very good I am sorry to say. My appetizer was soft shell crab, see pics. For some reason this was flattened thinner than a McDonalds cheeseburger patty and deep fried with a lot of breading and little to no meat. Because this was overcooked the flavor was simply burned dough/ chips tasting.
The fried rice was brown with a little bit of egg and almost nothing else. I know they know how to make good rice. This was not it. So what could have been a delicious combo of soft shell crab on fried rice was instead anything but good due to lack of flavor. With a beer the total was $27.50 before tip, which falls short of a good value for me.

Everything was fresh, well-made, and came out quickly. The service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. Definitely one of my go-to sushi spots.
