Review
We were visiting from LA and tried Al Dente Ristorante on a busy Friday night in the North End. Service was welcoming and quick, which stood out in such a packed area. Portions were large and shareable, and the team clearly worked hard to keep things moving.
Food itself was mixed. The calamari needed more crispness (a 2nd fry would really improve it). The lobster ravioli was fine but leaned too much on briny flavor without much depth in the sauce. The chicken lemon linguine was a bit soggy instead of light and fresh. Nothing was bad, but nothing stood out either.
Overall, it’s decent for the area if you need quick seating and solid portions, but with so many other options nearby, I’d probably try a different spot next time.
Pro tips
• Portions are generous, so consider sharing.
• Ask for extra crisp on fried dishes.
• Walk the neighborhood if you want to explore stronger options.
Calamari: 1/5 Tasteless, the marinara sauce did the heavy lifting
Linguine alla Vongole: 2/5 Didn’t taste authentic or close to it at all, the pasta tasted like it was simply tossed around in the sauce, not COOKED in it, also had a miserable number of clams for the price. There was too much pasta and I felt hungry very shortly afterwards
Bolognese: 5/5 Probably the best dish here, it tasted amazing and the portion was very generous with a lot of meat and pasta
First of all, the woman who seemed to be the manager gave my group terrible and very rude service.
Now moving on to the food, especially the pasta, the sauces were extremely watery. The bruschetta served there was almost offensive — just a piece of bread toasted with olive oil and topped with diced tomatoes at room temperature. The fried escalopes were dripping with oil and looked like something from Walmart’s frozen food section. Not to mention the bread served at the table, which seemed like it had been sitting in the pantry for days, along with butter like the kind they give you on airplanes.
And the most absurd thing I’ve ever seen: they charged extra for OLIVE OIL AND GRATED CHEESE — and when we agreed, they brought them mixed together in the same container. It was laughable!
$700 completely wasted, and my group, with full agreement, said we wouldn’t go back there even for free. Thank you!
