We serve delicious American char-grilled food with Hawaiian influences, served quickly (depending on how busy we are) and inexpensively. Featuring as many local ingredients as we can, including the delicious Punalu’u Bake Shop Hawaiian sweetbread buns for almost all of our sandwiches, goat cheese from Hawaii Island Goat Dairy, lettuce raised in Waimea, and tomatoes from Oahu. All of our burgers, fish, and chicken are char-grilled for smokey goodness! Our French fries and onion rings are fresh cut every day. We lightly batter our onion rings, which makes them crispy and delicious! We only offer fish freshly caught here in Hawaii, and it’s never, ever frozen, which makes our fish tacos even better! And our Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich is ono!

After looking through multiple other places, we decided to check out Island Ono Loa Grill – and boy am I glad we did. I ordered the Cheeseburger with sides of coleslaw and macaroni salad. The burger arrived open-faced with a generous supply of delicious pickles. The meat though.. wonderful! They advertise never frozen and always fresh/cooked to order and they do not disappoint. I was genuinely shocked at how tasty this burger was. Each time I took a break to eat some of the delicious sides (probably the best coleslaw I had on the island and the macaroni salad really hit the spot) and then came back to burger, it hit all the right taste buds again and again. I can’t wait to return to the island and get another taste of these amazing burgers!
The lady working the register (might have been the owner?) was also very kind and brought our food over without the need to use the buzzer they give you to indicate your order is ready (much appreciated).
I’m not sure if they use A/C in the summer months, but for January they have the doors open and it’s comfortable enough. There are tables outside as well – some of them shaded and can sit 5-6 people.
Parking can be found on the street or out back in the paid lots. There are plenty of paid parking spots and this establishment does validate for up to 90 minutes – so that’s super awesome!
If you come here for a fresh burger, you won’t regret it.

Solid lunch place right in a convenient location– we stopped in for lunch on a whim and were happy with what we ordered. Unfortunately they were out of the item I originally wanted to order (the macnut pesto goat cheese burger), but the bacon cheeseburger I did order was solid– good flavor and well portioned. The fries were really great! My girlfriend’s loco moco was also good. The gravy was flavorful and the patties were well cooked. I’m not a huge macaroni salad fan, but my girlfriend said it was good! Overall this place isn’t a must visit in my book, but I’d be happy to come back if I stayed nearby again.

Nice hole in the wall restaurant. Freshly cooked food! The fish tacos were delicious and the spicy sauce it comes with hits the spot. The Macnut hamburger patty and pesto goats cheese sauce was also really good but the bun was a bit of a let down. It was a bit too soft (and slightly sweetish?) and got soggy pretty quickly. Same with the chicken burger. The patty and gravy were epic but bun was soft and got soggy quick. Lovely friendly service and she gave us good food suggestions! Definitely worth a pit stop for a quick meal!

We discovered this location after our stop at the seahorse farm. Our family got a burger (upgraded to local beef), hot dog, chicken pesto sandwich, and loco moco (half portion was perfect). We also ordered fries, onion rings, side salad and sweet potato fries. Everything was delicious!!! The local beef patties were tender and flavorful and out of this world! Highly recommend.

I’ve have only ever eaten to-go orders, but there is no doubt they make the best cheese burger on the Big Island. I have tried and enjoyed the fish and chicken sandwiches as well. The fries and rings are awesome… I haven’t tried the cold sides. Overall, you may wait a few minutes longer than you’d like, but the food is absolutely worth the mild wait.

The food here was SO good – they helped me out with a bun-less burger and dedicated gluten-free fryer for the fries, while my husband enjoyed the best loco moco he’s had all week. We’ll be back to try other burgers, and enjoy the ambiance!

Underwhelming & over hyped; I didn’t find it deserving of its 4.6 rating. The hamburgers only great quality is that it’s charbroiled but then you need a good chef that actually scraped the burnt bits off their grill every so often not to ruin the burger with that overwhelming burnt bits taste. The bun is sweet which I didn’t really find paired well with the burger and its contents; would be much better with a pretzel bun instead. The Mac salad is just plain boring and tastes ordinary. I’ve had better; some people blend macaroni with potatoes salad or egg sandwich salad which gives the Mac salad a nice boost of flavour. This version is as basic as it gets and lacked taste. Onion rings were pretty ordinary; again overcooked and tasting burnt in some places; noticed the dough batter hardened as the onions rings cooled; no sweetness to the batter or the onion: disappointing. Pineapple Coleslaw; it’s very basic slaw with chunks of pineapple added; nothing to rave about here but at least the pineapple didn’t have that canned taste. My guest liked the locomoco but found it lacked gravy; said in comparison to other locomocos he’d tasted that he’d give it only a 5 out of ten. All in all; will not be returning. Btw; here are the updated menu prices; way more pricier than the ones last posted. There’s a really good restaurant next door called island lava Java; I’d highly recommend you go there instead.

Let’s start out with a OMG! This really is a great burger. It is the perfect thickness and topped with just enough stuff so you still taste the flavor of the beef. I ordered the hamburger with onion rings. We were asked how we wanted our burgers done and they came to us perfectly to our expectation, Medium- a pink inside. My onion rings, battered (not breaded) and perfectly done-crispy shell, the onion was NOT mushy and not to greasy. I only wish there was more of them, because they were so good. I even got some batter crumbles as an extra bonus.
Hubby had the Applewood Smoked Bacon Cheeseburger. He had that burger gone before I even finished my onion rings. His fries were requested extra crispy and again done perfectly, crispy outer with a softer inside to taste the potato.
I wish I would have seen the sign that said we could order local beef for +$1.95- I would have done that. I will do that next time, yes we are going back. (Will up date of anything changes)

We came for lunch and didn’t expect much but man it was pretty good. Not a big burger fan but this is a greasy burger just like what we were wanting. They have some unique items and burgers. The fries were also really good with large portions. I’d come back for a greasy burger.

This loco moco absolutely slaps. I got the half classic beef patty and half pork moco. The burger was very well seasoned and flavorful, good texture too. The pork was amazing. Tender and great. Good gravy as well. An all around banger.
We also called in our takeaway order for 14 and picked it up in ~30 minutes and didn’t have any errors from what I recall.
