I recently visited Chettinad Restaurant during our trip to Oregon and had a pleasant dining experience overall. The restaurant is clean, well-maintained, and has a comfortable atmosphere, making it a nice spot for enjoying Indian food with family or friends.

We ordered the Veg Dum Biryani, but the dish that arrived looked quite different from what we typically expect for a dum biryani. It resembled more of a pulao or possibly a Chettinad-style biryani, which made us wonder if there was a mix-up with the order. That said, the dish was still flavorful and enjoyable, just not aligned with the traditional dum biryani style we anticipated.

We also tried the Paneer Tikka, which was very good — well-seasoned, nicely grilled, and served with a fresh taste that stood out.

Overall, while the biryani didn’t quite match expectations, the quality of the food was good, and the restaurant offered a pleasant dining environment with attentive service. I would be open to returning to try a few more dishes from their menu.

I visited this place for my team lunch. This place served a full-course buffet with a changing menu; it also has a la carte.
The food seems authentic and flavourful with toned-down spices (you might find it bland for some dishes). I am providing a review based on what I have tasted.

Recommendations: Good for team lunches, the buffet system saves time to order.

Food:
Must Try: Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken, Sambhar uttapam, Naan, Fish Curry, Fried Rice, Veg Pulao, Bhindi Masala
Avoid: Spring Rolls or frozen items
Average: Gulab Jamun, Dessert options

Ambience: The restaurant theme is Indian Contemporary with instrumental music in the background, good enough for Conversations. I recommend working on their presentation, organization and perceived cleanliness.

Good to have: Allergy Details, Kids menu, kids activity

Additional Mentions: Liquor options are available, there is a heated cooktop on each table, and the staff is friendly and smiling. Accessible entrance (Please check if they have accessible washrooms). Ample parking, but it may get crowded on weekends. There’s an in-house shop to buy sweets, and do ask for corporate 15% discounts . Free mouth freshener candies at entry and exit.

Detailed Review:
The butter chicken and paneer gravy are on the sweeter side (I liked the butter chicken; the paneer was fine), and the overall spice texture brings out the taste of South Indian food beautifully. The uttapam (salted pancake) was well cooked and tasted nice with sambhar. The naan was fresh and hot. The fish curry cooked nicely with no excess smell. I liked the fried rice (it depends on the palate. Some folks like it more cooked) and veg pulao. Dal fry was nice.
The spring rolls were frozen and could have been better. There could be more textual details and information on the dishes. A better variety of desserts would be nice, the gulab jamun I had was average.

I have listed down the buffet content for reference.
Overall, there are plenty of options for vegan and non-vegan persons.

Buffet Content
—————

1 Veg and 1 Non-Veg Soup,
Fruits and Salads:

Snacks:

Mains:
Uttapam, Sambhar, Fried Rice, Veg Pulao, Butter Chicken, Parota, Fish Curry, Paneer Butter Masala, Coconut Rice

We did a work lunch, 4 of us total. My friends are vegetarian. Arrived about 11:50am on a Thursday. First observation is the buffet is no longer operated on weekdays, only weekends. buffet is a time saver for us all as we have 1-1:30pm meetings. We ordered off menu. We were the only people at the restaurant. It took nearly 20 minutes to get food and all of it arrived at different times. And when it did arrive, it was not entirely correct. At first they brought chicken for my vegetarian friend. It took at least 5 minutes for them to check on us and get something else going. Keep in mind, we are the only patrons at this time in the restaurant. When they brought the correct dish, my friends discovered bits of the same chicken mixed in, as if maybe they just tried cleaning up the plate and replaying it with the vegetarian food. Unacceptable, and it took like almost 20 minutes more to get the new plate. Meanwhile, my other friend got the tandoori chicken and it was very burned and dried out. I got the goat curry and so did my other friend. His curry arrived 15 minutes after mine. The food overall was mediocre to no so great. The very slow service made everything worse, I waited for 20 minutes with my curry while they brought others food. I can’t recommend this place anymore, it used to be pretty good spot.

Went in on a whim last night and although the place was empty, the staff and who I presume were the owners were super kind, friendly and pretty informative.

My friends and I did family style and ordered several plates such as the kadai chicken, chicken Andhra 65, Hyderabad chicken biryani, and the 3 foot dosa.

All of it came out excellent and we were particularly impressed with how fun eating dosas is as an activity with friends.

The highlight for all of us was the kadai chicken as it was very flavorful and paired very well with rice.

This place is awesome, and deserves to be visited!

Uncooked food can be a very unpleasant experience. I received my order an hour after placing it, but they missed several items. When I finally got the food, it was disappointing.

The chole was not good; it seemed like they had mixed in tomato chutney. The batura was excessively thick, enough dough to make 5 to 10 baturas. The kulcha was undercooked, and the dosa batter was not fresh; it tasted sour.

Visited here during a road trip through Portland. Ordered Podi Idli, Appam with Veg Kurma, Appam with coconut milk & Rasam Idli. Rasam was good n tasty. Everything else was below average. Appam was definitely not what you expect especially when the description reads as Kerala cuisine. I guess the non vegetarian food would be good here. Service however was good & quick. I will skip it if I am in this town again.

Good new restaurant. Inside is very open and bright. We had a weekday lunch buffet, and the food was very tasty. Both vegetarian and non-veg options are available. Weekday luch buffet menu is smaller, and weekend buffet has more varieties. Food was not too spicy. Rice pudding and tandoori chicken were yummy. The host is kind and pleasing. They give discounts if you have a local company ID card.

Updated review-
Sadly I’m dropping the review from 5 to three. Idk if they were having a bad day or what but the fish curry this time was bad. I asked for medium spice instead of spicy so that I could get the flavors more forward over the heat. Last time it was SO GOOD I wanted to appreciate the flavors before the heat kicked in. The flavor was more tomato forward and the sauce was more watery than a thick, smooth curry. This time bits of tomato and jalapeños were clearly evident. Like they didn’t let the curry simmer long enough or let the tomatoes become jammy before adding water they also didn’t let simmer down into a sauce.
And the depth of flavor I had last time just wasn’t there. I even asked the server if they gave me the right curry, and was assured it was the correct items though maybe the cook was different?? I wouldn’t think the different spice level would effect the taste that dramatically, because if I’d had THIS curry last time, I def wouldn’t have been back! ‍ And I was very much looking forward to it!
They were very good about it and offered to make something different or remake the same dish but I declined these things as I’d hate to be disappointed again if their other curries turned out the same. They also took the curry off the check. So don’t not go based purely off this review… just maybe dont expect consistent results?
I am updating the post with the pictures of the second curry by comparison.

JUST GO!
The food here so so richly flavorful and spiced as desired.
I ordered veg pakora, fish curry, plain Naan, to eat in. The server was kind enough to give me a sample of their veg soup, which is something I’d never try myself but I actually loved it! It was corn based but not overly corn-y with a velvet texture (but not too smooth like creamed corn is). Now it’s something I’d like to try to make at home!
The pakora was crispy and yummy, and the serving was just huge! Plenty for three to share so for just me it was more than enough.
The fish curry i asked for extra spicy because the Portland pallete is… lacking. And they delivered! It was delightfully spicy but still so so flavorful. The fish was tender and light and the curry sauce was literally liquid gold! I could eat it alone with Naan all day. The serving was generous of fish and sauce. I had enough for leftovers, big enough to share (but you wouldn’t want to!) The basmati rice was mostly perfect, there were a few hard kernels I bit into but other wise paired with the fluffy Naan and fish curry beautifully!
The Naan was enough for one, fluffy, warm and not burnt.
I ordered some of their veg soup to go- as well one of their desserts and extra Naan.
The food came out promptly, and you do pay at the front so you don’t feel rushed to finish.
Bonus points for plenty of napkins at the table.
Will update about the dessert I ordered!
But yes I highly highly recommend this place. I waited a while to visit and it did not disappoint!

My friend and went for the lunch buffet on a Monday around 1:30 pm (one hour before close).

Overall it wasn’t a very good experience and I would not come back. The service was ok, we got seated fine but after that there was nothing. We had to take an empty table’s water jug because the server never came around to fill ours back up. That on its own isn’t a big deal.

The food on the other hand is why I’m giving this place 2 stars. The buffet itself had an ok selection, not a ton of options, but some good staples like butter chicken, butter paneer, parkora, and some other sides. I wish I could say it was all delicious, but unfortunately any semblance of flavor was overwritten by salt. Everything was so, so salty. I couldn’t finish the chicken curry, the vegetable soup, or the butter chicken. The butter paneer was the only curry that I could remotely finish, and it was also salty (just not as salty as the others). By the end of my meal I was craving the plain naan just to balance everything out.

I also found bones in the two chicken curries that I tried. Some were sizable, and some we small bones that could be easily missed.

I wouldn’t recommend this buffet and I don’t think it’s worth the $17.99. hopefully they can make some changes in the future for a better experience.

Chettinad is my favorite Indian restaurant in Beaverton, and was excited to share my love for it when I ordered catering from them for my workplace’s Diwali celebration. You get so much food in quantity and quality for the price, especially when you go in during lunchtime and heap your plate from the well-maintained buffet. Everything is seasoned and spiced exceptionally and the local Indian population in Beaverton endorse it, which always gives it an extra star for me. I highly recommend the veg curry (my friend says it was the best he ever had), the tender fish apollo (last image), some biryani (prepare for leftovers with how generous of portions they give!), and always some garlic or butter naan to scoop handfuls of deliciousness into your face. My friend who is a chicken tikka masala fanatic raves about how creamy and zesty the chicken tikka masala was too. Chettinad has more than earned my endorsement and loyalty as an enthusiastic and hungry customer, and I can’t wait to have more. I am relieved that they came back after being temporarily closed, and still at the same location.
As for catering, it was such an easy experience -I recommend you call the restaurant and then you will continue your catering conversation through WhatsApp with an employee. $50 delivery for our order, which was a bargain. I will definitely order catering from them again.
