My daughter thinks I travel to Harrisonburg to visit her at JMU. She’s wrong. I drive down from northern Virginia to eat at El Charro. It’s the best Mexican restaurant in the area. Food is absolutely amazing and service is phenomenal. This place is legit with excellent salsa and the white queso dip. If you’re passing through on 81, stop for a bite!

This El Charro is GREAT!! I cannot express how much joy and memories I have made here. This is the best Mexican restaurant you can find in Harrisonburg. When you walk in, you’re immediately greeted by a bright, welcoming, vibe and definitely fitting for the Mexican vibe. You have a very short wait time if not busy, if busy you might have to wait like 2-5 minutes. When you sit, you get some warm chips and good salsa. The menu is excellent with everything from tacos to burritos, vegetarian options (like a veggie quesadilla, highly recommended) and hotdogs for the little kids. My personal favorite are the shrimp tacos. The avocado and cheese and sauce on the side combine so seamlessly together. The first bite is like someone put heaven and angels and everything good inside. When you get dessert, it’s very good very sweet and heavenly. I had the birthday celebration way too many times and it’s very good. The service through and through is wonderful. No matter the situation or person. I think everyone should get to experience this wonder of the world. Overall, I think people will leave here satisfied or more than satisfied with everything. El charro has definitely done well as a business and as a restaurant I hope to come here for generations to come.

Ate here on a rainy Saturday. Wasn’t overly crowded and the food was top-notch. Got the Enchiladas Verde with just cheese. Best enchiladas I’ve gotten in a long long time. Presentation was like something out of a magazine. Waiter was exceptionally poignant and attentive.

Very good food. A lot of people with family, kids and friends come here. One strange thing which I experienced was when I ordered a margarita I was asked to show my DL/ID by the server. Well, may be their policy I guess. But no where else I was asked to show my ID when I ordered a margarita. Anyways that was not a big deal, the food compensate it all. The chicken tacos are delicious. This place is busy on weekends but you will get a place in no time. We were traveling and hungry and we made the best decision to stop here to eat.

My family and I have been coming here for decades – it is a special place in Harrisonburg. We come here for numerous occasions: lunch, dinner, dine in, large take out orders for parties and etc.
Their food is the greatest! Food is well seasoned, delicious and fresh. Drinks are wonderful. Menu offers varies types of foods & drinks. Definitely recommend if you are visiting Harrisonburg. I think that most local people here are very familiar with El Charro.

2. Horchata didnt have cinnamon in it jus tasted like straight milk
3. Food wasnt that cold when it came out
4. Waiter didnt even check on us at the table only when he gave us our food

Their new menu is terrible. I wouldn’t mind price changes and new offerings but they got rid of many good menu options and the new menu seems incomplete and is full of typos. The service and atmosphere is the same good quality but it’s much harder to find good food there now. They have also eliminated the vegetarian menu.

Has gotten worse. Been there several times. Today was the end of the line for me. Took forever for the food to come for one. All my food was runny and not good. Will not return.
