Freaking Awesome.
Possibly the best fried grits I have ever enjoyed. Super tasty gravy and very good biscuits. Nothing fancy – just good Southern Cooking. I’m looking forward to returning and trying more menu items. Great music and friendly staff.

From a food critic’s perspective, this restaurant is rich in personality and ambition. The spray-painted T-shirts on display are genuinely cool and set a creative, street-art tone that suggests the space wants to be an experience, not just a meal. 3 of us dined together; two meals were solid, and one—mine—fell short of its promise.
I ordered the grits & gravy, a dish that invites comfort and confidence. The portion was small, and the grits leaned more toward familiar, at-home simplicity than a signature preparation. The biscuits were hearty but a bit doughy, while the eggs were cooked perfectly. With more seasoning and depth, the gravy, grits, and biscuits could easily become a highlight rather than an afterthought.
Service was memorable in its own way. A polite “thank you, sir” quickly turned into an unexpected cultural lesson before I even sat down—an interaction that underscored the restaurant’s strong sense of identity, if not its warmth.
The décor shows promise, though a deeper clean would allow it to truly shine. Dust on decorative plants and mirrors, along with an oddly placed insect trap right behind my head within eyesite & smell, distracted from the otherwise bold visual choices. Parking is also limited to paid options, which adds a layer of inconvenience.
Overall, this feels like a concept with creative roots still finding its footing. With a thoughtful refresh, renewed attention to cleanliness, and a stronger commitment to seasoning and execution, it could grow into its vision. I’m open to a return—especially after a relaunch that fully brings the concept to life.

I didn’t realize the history this place had before coming, just thought the menu looked interesting.
The atmosphere was really unique and interesting to take in.
The food was amazing. I don’t know what they put in their batter/seasoning for their chicken fried steak, but I wish I knew, because it made every other chicken fried steak I’ve had in my life feel like prison food it was that good.
My sister got their biscuits and gravy and she was also in awe of how good everything was.
Really appreciated too that they had authentic Squirt soda. Was a fun novelty I wasn’t expecting.

Spot on Soul Breakfast in Downtown PDX. Coffee was good and bottomless. I had the Waffle N’ Wings with a side of bacon. Chicken was tender and the bacon hearty. Great food and pleasant atmosphere. I really appreciate the icon Huey B. Newton portrait above the bar, power to the people!

This has to be one of the best breakfast spots in Portland hands down. Every bite was packed full of flavor. I highly recommend anyone who enjoys southern food, or just plain ole good food swing by here. I will be back that’s for sure! I highly recommend the country boy breakfast and the uptown or downtown shrimp and grits!

My husband, our friend, and I just visited Grits N’ Gravy for the first time today, and we were impressed! I’m picky when it comes to breakfast/comfort foods, especially gravy. I was honestly blown away by both the sausage gravy and the red-eye gravy. Both were so good and soothing on the stomach. Their biscuits were some of the best restaurant biscuits I’ve had in a long time. They cooked their eggs perfectly, giving us that wonderful yolk to drag our biscuits through. The homestyle potatoes with peppers and onions were a winner! Crisp, delicious. The grits were buttery and good, though a little runny for my taste. Still loved them! The portions were great as well! All in all, this breakfast was stellar and this gal’s heart (and stomach) is full.

Absolutely delicious! Got the Uptown shrimp and grits and it was incredible. So rich and flavourful! Portion was large and had plenty of shrimp and sausage. Service was slow, only one guy working the whole front which was busy when I visited. Will definitely visit again!
