The food here is really good— possibly some of the best fast food in the five towns. I love the rice bowls and the embrulho. But the service here detracts from the dining experience. Unlike other restaurants around here, they charge money for sauces. Unlike other restaurants around here, they don’t offer any lunch special deals.
The service is slow in-store, and one of the workers is incredibly rude. I asked her if I could just pay to add vegan cheese to my burger because I’ve done it here before, and she accused me of lying and told me off in a rude tone. It’s funny because I’ve seen other reviewers mention her unprofessional behavior as well.
Also, they didn’t even have forks today. They gave me a spoon to eat my fried chicken.
The stinginess of this restaurant is making me appreciate coming here less and less every time…
(This photo of the rude worker was from a different reviewer, but is the one I was talking about).
My wife and I have been loyal customers of Chimichurri for nearly eight years—long before we were married. I first discovered it while working at St. John’s Hospital in Far Rockaway, when colleagues ordered it for a late shift. The food blew me away, and I couldn’t wait to share it with my wife, who came from Miami at the time. She normally doesn’t like chicken, but after her first bite she said it was the best chicken she’d ever tasted. For years, we both agreed.
Back then, Chimichurri was a cozy little spot—half the size it is now, with only a few tables, a warm atmosphere, and an owner who genuinely cared about the food and his guests. The charcoal aroma, the perfectly crisp skin, the juicy meat—it was everything you wanted from comfort food with pride behind it. The lines were always long, and everyone waited happily because they knew it would be worth it.
Unfortunately, as the restaurant expanded, the quality began to slip little by little. Prices went up, sauces started coming with extra charges, and the food just didn’t have the same heart. Still, we kept coming back, hoping the magic would return.
Yesterday, after driving an hour and a half through traffic from Manhattan (we now live five and a half hours away), we stopped by one more time for old times’ sake. Sadly, this visit confirmed what we feared—the chicken was cold, the sides were cold, and the flavors that once made this place special were gone. We finished our meal out of hunger, not enjoyment.
Reading through the reviews now, I notice that many newer guests seem satisfied, but longtime customers like us can tell the difference. The heart of Chimichurri—the passion and warmth that built its reputation—feels lost in the pursuit of expansion.
We’re grateful for all the memories this place gave us, but this visit marked the end of our journey here. Maybe one day, if the flame is rekindled, we’ll come back. For now, we’re saying goodbye to what was once our favorite chicken in New York.
The one thing that remained, is the tasty chimichurri sauce.
Chili fries were great and wings are delicious.
Kebab was a little dry.
Overall, pretty good experience!
This really upset me. I paid about $30 and could have had a simple sandwich that would’ve tasted much better. He promised it would be very tasty and well balanced, but it was disgusting and nothing like what he described.
Chimichurri is a nice little unassuming restaurant. Seeing it from the street you’d never guess how good it is. The ingredients are all fresh and cooked to perfection and there are a wide variety of delicious sides to choose from.
Great food for the whole family.
