Our recent experience at J. Alexander’s in West Bloomfield, MI was extremely disappointing. When we arrived, no one greeted us or offered assistance, so we found our own seats at the bar — which was dirty, cluttered, and in need of cleaning. Throughout our visit, we had to ask for everything, from placing our order to getting basic service.
To make matters worse, we listened to other patrons around us complain about the same poor bar service and lack of attentiveness. It was clear that this was not an isolated experience.
The food was good, but it did not make up for the service we received. We actually wanted to order more, but because no one paid attention to us, we decided to leave and go to another local establishment instead.
For a restaurant with J. Alexander’s reputation, this experience fell far below expectations.

We had a great overall experience! The food was good and our server, Angel, was amazing. She took the time to talk to us and was very friendly. I could tell she was a very hard worker. I will definitely request her when I come back!

We enjoyed a featured fish, the lighting was low and just how we remembered service from our first visit in 2019 despite a remodel! Our waitress Jennifer was amazing and made sure our courses weren’t rushed. We stayed for a little over an hour and will probably come back in a week. Thanks also to Britney and Alyssa for the chit-chat…

I was disappointed coming here and I would NOT recommend. I visited recently due to multiple recommendations over the years, but I’m now realizing those were all 2013 or prior. I have had zero suggestions to eat here as of late. The food was subpar but priced as if this was still a fine dining establishment. To be honest, it’s pretty much Applebee’s wearing a nice suit. The service was great, I’ll give them that (which earned the 2nd star) & one of my guests mentioned they have been to different locations recently and had a much better experience. Therefore, I may try them again, but not this location which has apparently fallen off within the last decade.

Had the steak burger and it was excellent! String fries were average. I would offer truffle or do something a little more creative with them.
Service was great. The ambience started a little rough due to a child who was running around with no shirt and climbing tables. He may have had special needs but it did impact the beginning of the visit.

J. Alexander’s restaurant is an excellent place to eat for an upscale environment. We had
beautiful scenery overlooking the wetland area. The food quality was excellent and I enjoyed every bite of my grilled salmon. The portions are larger for a high end restaurant. The service and staff were friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is refined and warm. I did make a reservation and our party was seated right away.

One star rating.
Been a year since we came here. Hoping to have a good dinner that we have had in the past. Very disappointed, got there at 500 pm and was able to get a table right away. Took well over 2 hours to get a appetizer and our meal. Waitress Sam was nowhere to be found. Tucson steak was disgusting, ordered medium cooked and got rare. Loaded baked potatoe was certainly not loaded, had only two strings of cheese and not much else. Wife ordered a hamburger, tasted like they dumped a bottle of liquid smoke on it. She proceeded to get sick from it once we got home. Nobody ever came and asked how the meal tasted. We will never be back l. Sad that this chain has gone so far down hill.

I have been coming to this J. Alexander’s location since 2015, and it is genuinely sad to see how far it has gone downhill. It used to be one of the best places to meet several times a week, but that is no longer the case.

The management has clearly changed, and the customer service has deteriorated significantly. I understand that finding and retaining good employees can be challenging, but the lack of professionalism here is almost unbelievable. For example, the manager has abandoned a professional appearance altogether—no blazer or polished look—appearing instead in a visibly dirty shirt, with poor personal grooming and hygiene. This sets an unfortunate tone for the entire staff.

The staff now seem to take pride in being rude, unknowledgeable, and inconsistent, almost treating service like a game of chance—some guests receive attention, others are ignored. It feels as though no one has connected the basic reality that dissatisfied customers lead to fewer sales, which ultimately affects everyone’s jobs.

Nowadays, it appears that none of this matters, as if the goal is simply to run the place into the ground and move on to the next thing. This location desperately needs proper leadership and comprehensive customer service training if it hopes to regain the standards it once had.

Mother’s Day Dinner at Jay Alexander:
– The touching gesture of balloons and a card prior to Mother’s Day was heartwarming.
– Enjoyed a delicious salmon dinner while my husband had a great steak.
– The unique mac & cheese left us wondering about the mix of cheeses used.
– Key Lime pie dessert was indulgent, and the portion size was generous.
– Tried ginger beer for the first time and found it very refreshing.

Service was nice and accommodating, but that’s where the good news stops. The food is below average if not bad quality, and the price doesn’t match the quality you get. I’m all for paying more for great food but that’s not the case here, i don’t know what happened but the quality of food went down significantly this place just isn’t good at all for food.
