We absolutely loved Abyssinia. I ordered the key wot and it was great. It was slightly spicy but not overwhelming with balanced flavor. The sides were great, especially the potatoes and carrots, along with the yellow and red lentils. I also had some of the best tea at Abyssinia after the meal, which was a nice way to finish. I’d definitely recommend this spot to anyone wanting to try Ethiopian food or looking for something comforting and full of flavor!

So yummy and so willing to make gluten free injera if you call ahead. This is the best Ethiopian place in Memphis by far. Everything is gluten free as long as you have all teff injera (call ahead for). We love Mohamad and Meseret. They are so sweet and always treat us as family. If I could give ten stars I would.

Great service and cute, cozy setup on the inside! I ordered the pea stew with two sides, spicy lentils and yellow split peas. I would create a combo a la carte if visiting again. For the pea stew, I envisioned a different dish for pea stew. It is much like Shiro I’ve had at other restaurants but with extra onions. I definitely plan to come back to try more items on the menu. Overall the flavor and spice of the dishes was very good and the plating beautiful!

We absolutely love this place! This place is #1 on our list for ethiopian food in the U.S.A. . We tried in Florida, and Lousiana and in California. Memphis has the best food and prices around! When we do visit we eat all weekend from this place! Always great customer service and the food is always right when we order. You will not be disappointed! 5*
The picture is not mine but the food looks exactly the same!

one of my favorite restaurants in memphis! i no longer live here but everytime im in town i have to stop by. the food is amazing, the portion sizes are great, and the owners are the sweetest. everything i’ve tried here is delicious but our usual order is the veggie plater, lamb tibs, and gored gored (raw). the hot tea is also amazing.
come try this place!!

I’ve eaten here twice and the food has been phenomenal both times. The bread is fermented (probiotic) so it counts as diet food. Definitely give a try if you’re in the area.

Exceptional quality. You can tell this food is not only made from scratch but is made of healthy ingredients formulated in a healthy way. The taste is superb.

I’ve learned to slow down when I eat and doing so with this particular meal of Yetsom Beyaynetu delivered the most enjoyable meal I’ve had in a long time. I like the way the food on the plate is placed atop a single injera so the ingredients saturate and penetrate the injera.

Extra injera is served with the meal. I like cutting off a piece and wrapping it around some of the food and eating it like the tastiest, healthiest burrito in existence. The probiotics in the spongy injera combined with the vegetables create a powerful cocktail during digestion.

At first glance, you think there is not sauce but it is subtle. Some of the lentils are coated in a type of mustard. The pickled beets are the perfect balance of moist and soft. The two different potatoes mixes are exceptional contrasts in texture and umami. The red lentils are SUPREME.

You have string beans and greens that are the very origin of soul food from their ancient inspirations. Altogether, you cannot ask for a more futuristic diet from the earliest innovations in culinary composition. I’ve glanced their kitchen. It is real cooking like at home but with the clever hand of an exceptional chef.

I like many different dishes from different parts of the world but this one, in Memphis stands above them all. Yes, I have visited the restaurant over the years but perhaps 2 – 4 times a year. Not a lot compared to others. Despite that, when I walked in recently after being away for a few months, she said, “hello brother … you want the same as usual”. I could not believe it! That level of engagement after so much time away is far beyond what I am used to seeing.

I have made videos about the restaurant years ago but, and I know people say this, I feel like the food gets better each year. If it was great years ago, it is at a supreme level today. I like the placement of Himalayan Pink salt on the tables. You don’t really need it but if you want it, you have one of the best salts. The water is served in a tall glass flask with a silicon lid. Basically, they keep water in a highly chilled state and it is served nearly ice cold. I do not know of any place that does that.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is their tea. I asked them if they sell it in tea bags. Well, you will just have to enjoy it in the restaurant. Best tea in Memphis. Healthy and uplifting. I will not compare them to specific restaurants by name in terms of the tea. Some come close. Very close. The hot tea at this restaurant is the absolute best.

I do cook various cuisines which gives me insight into dishes around the world. All I can say is despite my experience, I cannot match this level of culinary excellence and I can say that the softness of each part from different lentils to potatoes, tomatoes, greens and other beans is pitch perfection.

More than this however, is their kindness and consistently gentle and thoughtful approach to all customers. Not just me. They are just genuinely nice people who make food from their heart and treat everyone with extreme hospitality. That is the real reason I am writing this review. The food quality could not be ignored but the customer service match it.

I do want to make a final note about quality. In my view, it is not just how something tastes. The more I have learned about cooking healthy and as I go into 18th year without meat and my 4th year without processed oils, processed sugar, and processed bread … basically eliminating GMOs and fake ingredients from my diet, I have become more sensitive to the difference between food made with processed shortcuts versus those that are like my own home cooking that has zero processed ingredients.

When I taste their food, it is the latter. You can tell this is real food and not a meal where the chemistry was figured out to get the most positive sentiment for a return visit. I cherish the for making authentic, genuine, real food that is seasoned for life.

Yesterday was our first visit to Abyssinia and our very first experience with Ethiopian food. It was absolutely amazing! Upon walking in the door, we were immediately greeted by a very friendly woman with an amazing smile. We both ordered the #14 Vegetarian Platter and the Spiced Tea chilled. We were so impressed by the number of items and variety of flavors the Vegetarian Platter included. It was lots of food and a fantastic price. We even had leftovers! Everything was perfectly cooked, delightfully spiced, and presented in such a beautiful way. The Injera was delicate, spongy, and delicious. The chilled Tea was refreshing and paired wonderfully with our meal. After eating, a very nice gentleman offered us the hot version of the Spiced Tea to try. It was just as amazing hot. I believe it just may be the very best Tea in Memphis! He kindly poured us 2 cups of the hot Tea to go, so we got to enjoy it all the way home. The car was filled with the most amazing Spiced Teas scent. The restaurant was on the smaller side, which added a lovely cozy feeling that is perfect for small groups. Everyone we spoke with was so welcoming had such a great energy. We’re already planning lunch with friends to introduce them to this wonderful place of peace, happiness, and amazing food.
