The only notes I had: we had to wait for another party to join us before being served; which would have been fine, had we been informed of the twenty minute wait. And, the waitstaff was quite inattentive. It took longer than half an hour to get a refill. ♀️
I would estimate we have eaten hibachi between 200-300 times in the last 20 years. I’m not an expert, but I’m experienced and always try to connect with the staff. Doing so has given me insight to the point of view from across the grill.
The bottom line is this: the service, food, and experience tonight has likely resulted in our last visit to this establishment. We received burned eggs in our over-sauced (and doubled, per our request and expense) fried rice. Burned – as in the subtle brilliance of hibachi fried rice was completely obscured by the acrid prevalence of the sole protein involved. Our chef spoke very little English, which is par for the course and expected. Pun intended; but I’m not proud of it. However, they also failed to provide anything beyond a mumbled and unintelligible recitation of an incorrectly written order. No cooking utensil acumen, no puns (egg roll, etc), no volcano, train, fireworks, etc. In fact, they, without warning, terrified our 3 year old with a singular oversized oil fire – then proceeded to burn previously mentioned eggs in said burned oil. While we consoled our rightly concerned 3 year old, our two teenage children raised their newly hairless brows (eyebrows grow back, I hope) at the negligence and silence of our apparently inexperienced cook.
We enjoyed our meal by piling egg ash on the side of our plates – they accompanied our empty (unrefilled) drink (Dr pepper, tea) glasses quite well throughout the evening – and eating the remainder of what we were served.
We had the opportunity to assure our fellow table mates that that experience wasn’t normal, and that in fact it was quite the opposite of our experience. Then I tipped 20+ percent and we left more than 1/4 of $1000 on the table to commiserate our night.
I don’t believe I have ever felt quite so uncared about at any food establishment in my life. I’ve also never left a negative review about a restaurant. If you’ve read this, Kyoto is 5 minutes away. Dress a little nicer, spend slightly more, and actually enjoy the experience.
We came during dinner time (probably 6 or 7 PM). Service was super fast and very attentive! Our waiter had a big smile on his face and was super polite! Brought my husband a refill before he even realized it was half full!
We had the fried calamari, eel roll, 99 roll, tonkatsu pork, grilled seafood.
The calamari was cooked perfectly, I could bite through it with my front teeth and even with the better calamari I’ve had I don’t think I’ve ever been able to do that!
The eel roll and 99 roll were both excellent. My husband thought that the rice seemed soft and overcooked but I noticed they seem to use long grain rice instead of the very short grained sushi rice, this is likely why it seems softer. To me it’s not a deal breaker, it tasted just fine so I was plenty happy! I also highly recommend the 99 roll it is bursting with flavor!
The miso soup, salad, and fried rice that came with the entres were all good. I was a bit sad at the fried rice not having any veggies but the flavor was so good I did not mind. I realized when I finished the rice that it looked like they are using either butter or ghee (or some other kind of light yellow oil, noticed traces of it on the inside of the bowl) and that would explain it tasting so good!
The entres, my husband and I both sampled eachother’s, his seafood tasted excellent, was cooked perfectly, and had excellent flavor. My tonkatsu, I’m not even kidding and I’m saying this 100% sober, the sauce tastes like Christmas. It’s okay, you can laugh, I’m still laughing about it myself. But no seriously, it is heavy with ginger and sugar which reminds me of gingerbread (it works with the sauce though and isn’t overpowering) and has a very strong citrus flavor that might be yuzu? I haven’t actually had it myself so I don’t actually know what it tastes like, but it tasted like lemon crossed with orange and very tart like a cranberry sauce. I could be completely wrong though, maybe it’s just good old citric acid. Whatever it is, I absolutely loved it and would happily come back for the tonkatsu and that sauce!
Oh and I also see an earlier review stating they wished you could choose between fried rice and steamed, you can! Our waiter asked us which one we wanted before putting in our order.
If there was one thing I could gripe about it would be that the sushi menus need to be redone, they need to be laminated so they are easier to clean. They are grimey and I can tell they had tried to clean them by how wet they are but there is only so much you can do with paper, putting a plastic coating on them will really help with that! I would not say that this ruined my experience though.
On a positive note:They did have chopsticks and something to help the kids with the chopsticks.
Got a refund for one entrée just Looked at my Ramen did not come with anything besides one egg and one piece of meat did not come with bamboo shoots, onions, corn, or anything that said in the description. Highly disappointed!
Love the sushi And hibachi! Great service!
Grilled seafood hibachi platter was all perfectly done. To nail the scallops tender & warm is always a skill! Perfect shrimp, salmon, onions, and everything else, all tied together with a wonderful sauce. Great timing to get all done right And blend flavors so well.
Sushi was fantastic, too!
Smoke Salmon Killer is toasted, so warm salmon ready to enjoy! Not such a fan of eel sauce but a dip in soy moved it up several points in flavor rating!!
Hawaiian is Tuna and avocado atop a California roll. +Yum!
And Chefs Rockwell fire roll (local name) was a great combo of flavors!
We will return, with friends, Snd for our Anniversaries!
