Driving through Louisiana and had to detour to New Orleans for a King Cake. The shop was great! Big selection and everything I tried was good. Unfortunately by the time I stopped they only had traditional King Cakes left. It was still worth it. I also tried a Pain au chocolat (they call it a chocolate croissant ), a Bavarian cream puff and a large chocolate eclair. They didn’t have Bavarian filled eclairs, just chocolate. My only complaint, chocolate pudding filled? Come on. The pastry shell was too good to fill with canned pudding. Overall, pleased and I’ll go back.

Haydel’s Bakery is an absolute gem and a must-stop if you’re anywhere near New Orleans—especially during Mardi Gras season. This family-run bakery has been around for 50+ years, and it shows in the quality, the service, and the loyal local following.
I stopped in on a Sunday, which they’re normally closed, but during Mardi Gras they open specifically for king cakes. That was my mission—and wow. I picked up their famous praline pecan king cake, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Incredible flavor, perfectly balanced sweetness, and clearly made with care and tradition.
Despite a steady crowd, the staff was incredibly friendly, the line moved fast, and the whole process was smooth and efficient. You could tell they’ve got this down to a science. While I was there, I couldn’t resist grabbing some cookies and other sweets, and everything was top-notch.
You can immediately tell this place is a local favorite—from the way people talk to the staff to how confidently everyone orders. Haydel’s isn’t just a bakery; it’s part of Louisiana’s food culture.
If you’re in the area during king cake season (or any time, honestly), this place is absolutely worth the stop. Five stars, no question.

I refuse to leave New Orleans without having a Haydel’s TURTLE (usually 5 or 6 )!!! OMG!
My favorite dessert since I was a child. Haydel’s has the best pastries, petit fours and cakes. My wedding cakes and birthday cakes have all been absolutely delicious! If I could give Haydel’s a 10… I would. The staff is always friendly and kind. You can grab Haydel’s pastries on Magazine St and at Caffe Caffe!

Got my king cake in less than 20 hours in Western Montana through UPS overnight shipping. Cake was in great shape and tasted incredible. Was able to share with my Montana neighbors some southern tradition of Mardi Gras. UPDATE 1/29/2026.. ordered a cream cheese king cake 2 weeks later and like before, was received in Helena, Montana in 15 hours.

Haydel’s Bakery offers great customer service and a large, tempting selection of pastries. The staff is friendly and efficient. Unfortunately, the king cake didn’t live up to expectations in flavor and texture, which was a letdown given the bakery’s strong reputation.

They carefully reviewed our design ideas, listened to what we wanted, and offered thoughtful suggestions of their own. We chose Haydel’s immediately because they truly listened, worked within our vision, offered creative ideas, provided a fair price, and (most importantly) the cakes were absolutely delicious.

Unfortunately, this king cake didn’t live up to my expectations. The texture was off, almost like the cake was not fresh! Not to mention tons of sugar sprinkles clumped together. I normally get king cake from somewhere else but I was too late with my ship order. What a disappointment since I enjoy getting them every year.
