The corner of S Hudson St and Rainier Ave was well lit and did not feel dangerous at all. The only problem was that there is not nearly enough parking either on the street or in the paid lots. Once we found our spots, it was easy to walk to the big wooden doors and get in out of the cold. The door man looked up our tickets faster than I could have brought them up on my phone. He asked if we had a table reservation. I looked around the room that was about 80% full. I wished I had noticed the extra link on the website below the link for tickets. Fortunately, we were early enough to get one of the two tops by the bar. We had a pillar blocking our view of the stage, but there were worse seats that filled up before the music started.
The decor is interesting, but it was hard to figure out what the style was and how it related to the name of the place.
I am a fan of special cocktails, so I ordered the “King” and my date ordered the “Queen”. We chatted as dates do for quite a while before our drinks showed up. Despite the fact that the bartender had gone heavy on the sweetness, they were tasty. We were enjoying them when Tekla and Jeff took the stage.
Tekla told stories in between melancholy songs that she wrote. The band added a slight country feel to the songs that we enjoyed. They invited Alice and Freebo up for a couple of songs, which seemed strange since they were on the bill as the next band. It was odd, but all the performances were good.
During the break between the bands, we ordered a second round of drinks. After another long wait, they came to the table. We toasted and took sips. Both of the drinks were not like the first round. The sweetness was gone and they were noticeably stronger. There was a time in my life when getting an extra strong drink would be a bonus. Now, I am old and like consistency.
We enjoyed more music before getting the check. $100 for 4 drinks and a piece of pie. It’s a wonder that anyone goes out anymore. The tickets were $40 on top of that.
We paid up and headed out into the night.

I’d have to say, Seattle is much better off with The Royal Room in it. Yet, live music never gets going until AFTER Happy Hour, and/or I want to be home. It must be the traffic.
The Royal Room has started a free (no cover) Happy Hour in the outer bar area, 4-6. I saw an old guy trio, and had some impressive Yam Chip appetizer. Pints & Well Drinks at a decent price, and a casual place. We were’t the youngest folks there, as one guy without any grey hair met his parents there. But, the acts that followed up were sure to pack in a few dozen.
OK, round 2. We, arrive at 5:09, and they take a break. We just could not plan any better than that, contractor and traffic. No issues.
Their singer is killing it with Dad jokes after songs. And, the Happy Hour tacos are VERY tasty, and almost as messy. My wife’s yam chips came in handy as utensils for plate cleanup. Very fast turn around.
The bartender at the bar was very stressed and with a classic passive aggressive tone. Looks like they are very short staffed. How can you have a good customer service?
We left in less than one hour. Paid super expensive tickets – $90.00 – for a very frustrating experience.
I don’t know if it was because of my skin color or origin, but I didn’t enjoy how I was treated during the Brazilian night party by the staff.
Something needs to be done. Not good experience at all.
If you’re going to watch and listen to jazz I suggest sitting in the smaller middle tables or at the bar. If you’re there just to listen and don’t care about watching, the back corner is for that. When they allow people in for standing room only, they will stand in front of where you sit especially if you’re in the back corner so you can’t see the musicians. The middle of the venue is best for actually watching.
