I ventured to Columbia City to the Royal Room, a small intimate venue for dinner and concert. I ordered the Signing Bowl of black beans, dirty rice, collard greens, picked cabbage, and avocado. The bowl was excellent with its mixture of tastes and textures. I also ordered the Yam Chips, deep fried yam slices like potato chips. They were good. The service was fabulous as was the music.

“Where will we park?” asked my date. She was concerned about walking after dark in the neighborhood around The Royal Room. We agreed to meet in the parking lot and I would offer whatever protection I could.
The corner of S Hudson St and Rainier Ave was well lit and did not feel dangerous at all. The only problem was that there is not nearly enough parking either on the street or in the paid lots. Once we found our spots, it was easy to walk to the big wooden doors and get in out of the cold. The door man looked up our tickets faster than I could have brought them up on my phone. He asked if we had a table reservation. I looked around the room that was about 80% full. I wished I had noticed the extra link on the website below the link for tickets. Fortunately, we were early enough to get one of the two tops by the bar. We had a pillar blocking our view of the stage, but there were worse seats that filled up before the music started.
The decor is interesting, but it was hard to figure out what the style was and how it related to the name of the place.
I am a fan of special cocktails, so I ordered the “King” and my date ordered the “Queen”. We chatted as dates do for quite a while before our drinks showed up. Despite the fact that the bartender had gone heavy on the sweetness, they were tasty. We were enjoying them when Tekla and Jeff took the stage.
Tekla told stories in between melancholy songs that she wrote. The band added a slight country feel to the songs that we enjoyed. They invited Alice and Freebo up for a couple of songs, which seemed strange since they were on the bill as the next band. It was odd, but all the performances were good.
During the break between the bands, we ordered a second round of drinks. After another long wait, they came to the table. We toasted and took sips. Both of the drinks were not like the first round. The sweetness was gone and they were noticeably stronger. There was a time in my life when getting an extra strong drink would be a bonus. Now, I am old and like consistency.
We enjoyed more music before getting the check. $100 for 4 drinks and a piece of pie. It’s a wonder that anyone goes out anymore. The tickets were $40 on top of that.
We paid up and headed out into the night.

The Royal Room is the heartbeat of Seattle’s music scene — intimate, soulful, and full of intentional artistry. Last Minute Maybes opened the night with pure joy and rhythm, and Funk Pro Trunk shut the room down with funk, spirit, and a conscious message that hit me deep. This wasn’t just a show — it was community, culture, storytelling, and sound woven together. A beautiful reminder of why we support local musicians and spaces like this.

We came here to watch a local jazz band play (the Wednesday club). It was a nice enough venue for that. Prepaid $25 each plus fees to see the band and then another $30+ each on food and beverage. The food was the weak spot, we chose to fish and chips because how bad can it be? The answer is pretty bad. Very thin fish fillets and overcooked. The food tasted like it came from Sysco, most options were grilled or deep fried. Typical pub fare but not even that well done for pub food. We did have a nice time watching the band with a lot of friends who converged here for the same reason. Dinner reservations get you a guaranteed table spot to watch the band from. Next time I might try eating at the pizza place next door and take my chances on seating for the band.

We went for a Charlie Brown Christmas performance to support SHMP and the pianists were awesome. The service was top notch. The food was edible but nothing exciting. We tried the sliders, the chili soup and the apple cider donut cake. The cake was the best.

$23-30, we had cocktails vs. beers.
I’d have to say, Seattle is much better off with The Royal Room in it. Yet, live music never gets going until AFTER Happy Hour, and/or I want to be home. It must be the traffic.
The Royal Room has started a free (no cover) Happy Hour in the outer bar area, 4-6. I saw an old guy trio, and had some impressive Yam Chip appetizer. Pints & Well Drinks at a decent price, and a casual place. We were’t the youngest folks there, as one guy without any grey hair met his parents there. But, the acts that followed up were sure to pack in a few dozen.

OK, round 2. We, arrive at 5:09, and they take a break. We just could not plan any better than that, contractor and traffic. No issues.
Their singer is killing it with Dad jokes after songs. And, the Happy Hour tacos are VERY tasty, and almost as messy. My wife’s yam chips came in handy as utensils for plate cleanup. Very fast turn around.

The hostess (short hair and glasses) didn’t allow me and my spouse to get a table. She said the man that was sitting there and left the restaurant would come back. Well, he didn’t come back and a few minutes later other two guys that arrived after us got the seats and the table. I asked her why she allowed them to take the table and she had no answer. It was a Brazilian party on 2/14/2026. Seats not available for me but available for white folks?

The bartender at the bar was very stressed and with a classic passive aggressive tone. Looks like they are very short staffed. How can you have a good customer service?

We left in less than one hour. Paid super expensive tickets – $90.00 – for a very frustrating experience.

I don’t know if it was because of my skin color or origin, but I didn’t enjoy how I was treated during the Brazilian night party by the staff.

Something needs to be done. Not good experience at all.

First time to the Royal Room. Was a really great time and the Big Band was also amazing and super fun to listen to.

Cool little place for Jazz. Food was ok, not big servings, just enough to satisfy your hunger.

If you’re going to watch and listen to jazz I suggest sitting in the smaller middle tables or at the bar. If you’re there just to listen and don’t care about watching, the back corner is for that. When they allow people in for standing room only, they will stand in front of where you sit especially if you’re in the back corner so you can’t see the musicians. The middle of the venue is best for actually watching.

I went here with my family for a scalpels night. There was many people there and everyone had a good vibe. It was very busy so the service was a little slow but when the food got here it was pretty good.
