Have you ever had a sandwich so perfect that you immediately start planning for your next trip back before you’ve finished the first bite? Because that’s what it felt like when I took a crunch of the Banh Mi (Roasted Pork).
Craving for some Vietnamese flavors, we headed down to Bánh Mì Ba Le at Dorchester to try out their amazing spread. Oh, also did I mention this spot is a local secret?
The banh mì is a dish that you MUST order (It is literally in the store’s name). The way the bread shatters—that perfect, thin, crispy crust—is ever so subtle, but you would definitely feel its growing presence with every chew. It’s the ideal textural foundation for the cool, crunchy skin of the roasted prok and the bright, pickled vegetables. 10/10
The banh cuon (steamed rice rolls) came quickly after and the smooth, delicate texture of the rice paper helps to provide a refreshing balance. Make sure to thoroughly coat the rolls, chả lụa (ham), and chả giò (spring roll) pieces with the accompanying fish sauce to get that consistent savory, sweet, and tangy punch. 9/10
The che (sweet bean/tapioca soup) was done well, although nothing really stood out. 7/10
The staff were very attentive as well, providing great service, and the sheer display of prepared food (like the grilled fish and stuffed corn) was a feast for the eyes. The interior of the place was also very busy and bustling; definitely check out this place when you are looking for a true taste of Vietnam.
PS: The waiting time at 3pm during the weekends is definitely something to factor in as well. While it took approx 30mins, it was definitely worth the wait if you are craving for a great Vietnamese meal!
Overall Rating: 8.6/10

They really open at 6 AM! However, im not sure if the food was fresh? The offal porridge, the porridge for sure was freshly cook, however the offal definitely was not fresh, there were a smell and off taste to its. The spring rolls were soggy and chewy. I bought 4 items ended up costing me about $50. Im not sure if i wanna come back. The ladies working there were a bit pushy at selling more food to me, i feel so much pressured to buy more!

Huge line but very efficient operation. They effectively have an assembly line of people putting together bahn mi. There were tons of other food items there and I was tempted to try it all!
The bahn mi itself was very good and worth the wait. They’re pretty big but I finished it.
There is limited seating but there are a few tables in the back if you’re lucky to get one.

a little market full of hidden treasures!
Fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced — I’ve been coming here for years and I truly love it. A must-try spot!
Highly recommend the savory congee, sticky rice, rice cakes, spring rolls, chicken bánh mì, and the freshly pressed sugarcane juice. (You can also buy the same bread they use for their bánh mì, along with different kinds of Vietnamese ham to make your own banh mi at home.)

Went in here for lunch on a weekday and ordered bahn mi sandwiches to go. There is a large selection of Vietnamese products in the store. There was little to no line and the staff were quick, efficient and very friendly. The bread is crispy and the sandwiches are loaded with delicious ingredients. The sandwiches are also priced affordable at around $8 each. Very good experience here and I look forward to returning.
Thanks!

That $5 fish sauce jar is totally worth it. We love their banh mi and always grab extra to take home. Even when we get takeout, we always ask for extra fish sauce. And honestly, their sauce is amazing. Even for $5, it still feels like a steal. We spent over $100 on banh mi and they still charged us an extra $5 for the sauce.

The atmosphere is chaotic due to the long lines, busy business, and difficulty placing orders. However, these issues should be seen as positive, indicating that it is good/fantastic/tasty. Is it worth a 2-hour wait standing up? Yes, it does. I went on a Sunday, the first time on a weekend, and it was busy. As a result, I’ll try different weekdays and probably when they open. Suggestion: write down everything you plan to buy so you don’t forget, since once you pay, it will be challenging to go back to wait. Go. Buy. Enjoy the ban mih in a very crusty baguette.

I’ve been going here since I was a little kid, the quality is as good as ever and now that they’ve expanded (for at least like 5 years now) they’ve been offering more options! They do get busy around lunch hours, which I love to see my local banh mi place get so much recognition), so standing in line takes like 30mind, but it’s so worth it. I always get the roast beef banh mi, the banh bot loc and banh trang tron are nice to have occasionally too

Dot Ave CLASSIC, I get a BBQ beef banh mi before I go to classes for the day and it always hits the spot. Meat quality is divine, garnishes galore, and an efficient assembly line going on behind the counter. I’ve gotten some baked goods as well which are always tasty, and the iced coffee is obviously a favorite.
