Social Profile:

The Saugus Cafe is the oldest restaurant in LA county, opening it doors in 1886. The business transferred many hands and in 1998 the business was formally purchased by longtime dishwasher/bartender/cook Alfredo Mercado. The Cafe unfortunately closed in January of 2026, due to disputes with the new landlords, who are attempting to claim ownership of the business without purchasing the business license from the Mercado family. The landlords are attempting to re-open the cafe, but as they have been refusing to lease to any potential buyers that reach out to the Mercado family, the real future of the Saugus Cafe is, for now, locked in a legal dispute.

Old-school diner featuring classic American comfort food, plus a backroom cocktail bar.

Stopped here to get some breakfast on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds. Got some yummy pancakes! They were amazing. Great service. Love that this place remains open to keep a little history going in our valley. Just a heads up, bring cash if you dont want to pay a credit card % fee.

Open since 1886 it is one of, if not the, oldest restaurants in Los Angeles County. We were in the area so we decided to stop in for our first visit. I am sure it has had many iterations over the years but currently it is a diner on one side and another area for the bar, but separated. It has a really homey feel to it and looks like the classic LA diner on the inside. They have a free parking lot attached, but we were able to find a parking spot right out front. Our server was very polite, although it took quite a long time for our food to come out.

Aside from the wait time, the food items were very good taste wise. I chose the Country Fried Steak for my breakfast and we also shared a side order of Biscuits and Gravy. The steak was actually very good and very crispy but not overly done. The biscuits were OK but not favorite. I wish they would be more flaky, but I still enjoyed them. We also ordered a side of Pancakes for the table and everybody enjoyed that as well.

Overall, a good local country diner and I would recommend if you are in the area.

My family and I really enjoyed this place. It’s got that home-y cozy and chill feel that you get from old diners, and their menu is not complicated like with newer restaurants. The food is just what you’d expect from an older diner. It’s good and satisfying.

We were surprised they got busy around 1030 on a Tuesday, but I guess it’s just a fave. The prices are good too even despite the inflation and everything.

I recently made a visit to the Saugus Cafe since I heard they were closing. I honestly couldn’t remember why we don’t usually go. I absolutely love the history of the place and it’s very close to home and we love going to breakfast. We sat ourselves and I wanted to order a breakfast combo. I always ask what options I have to choose from besides eggs since I cannot eat them. The reply was nothing- there is nothing. She added that I could substitute something else for every part of the breakfast but not the eggs. I tried to think simple like a few grapes maybe some orange slices that they prop on drinks but nope not one single thing can be done for someone who cannot eat eggs. Which is why we never go. Fingers crossed that the new owner will take this into consideration.

I have loved the Saugus Cafe since I was a little kid and ate there with my dad before we would go to work in the morning in the 60s. Keep up the great work. May you stand forever!

We came on a Monday, so there was no wait time for us, and luckily when we arrived it wasn’t so busy, but within no time we noticed this place got busy quickly.
Our breakfast orders came in a great wait time. About 15 mins. Our server was very friendly and gave us some background on the restaurant, which we enjoyed knowing some history to this place.
The food was very tasteful.
The older man that came to our table refilling our coffee cups was very attentive.
Enjoyed the feeling of this old vintage dining atmosphere. Recommend this place, and would love visiting again.

A wonderful place to eat. The food is delicious especially the bacon. The employees are very nice and friendly. Our waitress was Brenda. She was great and very patient with my senior crew. It was pleasure talking to her. Highly recommended.

Loved this little diner. It was our first time there and we weren’t disappointed. The waiters were friendly and patient as we weren’t sure what to order. Our waiter was very accommodating to my order as well. It was quiet and clean, and there was plenty of seating inside. I’m not sure how it gets on the weekends as we went during the week.

The interior looks much bette than it looks on the outside. I ordered the omelet combo and the omelet itself was really good, but the country potato side tasted like it was leftovers from the previous day. Coffee is what you expect from a place that serves bottomless Coffee. It’s a bit more expensive than IHOP And I am not completely sure it’s better.

Excellent service, lots of parking. Driveway a little tricky but front parking available.
Meals were: Denver Omelet with home fries & biscuit & gravy. AND Belgian waffle, scrambled eggs and bacon.
Very good food and a lot of it, a little on the rustic side, aka: home flavors & a little well done side. Prices are about what the market bears, maybe a little less. Bottom line, we will go back.
