We decided to visit for dinner when we heard this long-standing restaurant had reopened.

They’re especially known for their Curry Crab, and it definitely lived up to the reputation. We all really enjoyed the rich, flavorful curry crab, and it paired perfectly with the Roti, very satisfying and highly recommended.

Everything we ordered that evening was well prepared and enjoyable. It’s great to see this restaurant back and continuing to serve delicious food to the community.

I discovered this place through social media because of their famous curry crab, so I decided to book it for the first time to celebrate my birthday with a few friends.

I called ahead to make a reservation and, when we arrived, the restaurant was extremely busy. We ended up waiting about 30 minutes, but the staff kept giving us regular updates and were genuinely kind the entire time. I actually felt bad because some other customers were giving the staff a hard time for no reason, but they handled everything professionally.

Once we were seated, they were very accommodating and even apologized for the long wait by offering free spring roll apps which is something they absolutely didn’t have to do.

We were blown away by how many food options they had: pho, rice dishes, specialties, seafood, and of course, crab. Since it was our first time, we ordered a bit of everything to get the full Saigon Star experience: curry crab, massive oysters, pineapple fried rice, salted fish fried rice, roti, banh mi, and salt & pepper soft-shell crab.

And wow every single dish was amazing! Our server Anita and her manager were fantastic. Throughout the night, different staff members would stop by to chat or joke around, which made the experience even better.

Overall, the service, food, and atmosphere were all incredible. We’ll definitely be coming back!

The half-price crab was not as delicious as expected. The House Famous Specialty Curry Crab—the curry sauce was thick but lacked depth of flavour. The naan served with it was also mediocre.

As for the Thai Platter, the Satay skewers were just average. The spring rolls, rice rolls, and fish cakes were dry, not very fresh, and presented quite carelessly. It was truly disappointing, especially for a price of nearly $30.

The Sambal Wok Clams were completely different from the sambal sauce I’ve tried at other restaurants—it tasted just like ordinary stir-fried clams.

Overall, the restaurant is quite average. If not for the numerous promotions I saw earlier, I wouldn’t have dined here.

Since the restaurant specializes in seafood, it’s worth pointing out: in both of these dishes, the sauce felt completely separate from the seafood itself.

Also, the dining space is too packed to have a good experience there.

Last week we went to Saigon Star for their soft opening. When we got there the restaurant was packed. I spoke with someone in line and was told that they had the curry crab on special, which was the reason why the place was full and people like me waiting. It was bedlam as I stood waiting by the cash counter. The waiters were trying to take orders, serve food and changing plates at the same time.
Anyhow 40 minutes later we got a table by this time we had decided what to order. Of course curry crab, sambal clams, roti, bean curd and curry lamb pot and garlic gai lan. Wanted some west coast rock oysters but they were out of stock.
The curry for the crab was wonderful. Its profile was just right not too sweet, the various spices just melded together so well. It’s one of the best curries I’ve had in a long time. The garlic gui lan had just the right texture it balanced the spices of the other dishes. Roti was okay nothing special. The sambal clams was disappointing sauce was not pungent enough. The bean curd lamb curry pot was missing the bean curd. We were told that non-Asian clients did not like it so they left it out but didn’t change the description. Letdown – because the bean curd would soak up the curry lamb and the taste is delicious. It is upsetting when the authenticity of a dish is lost because others cannot appreciate it. Also in the pot of lamb curry there were only four pieces of lamb. It was a bowl size portion and they called it a pot. This dish was definitely overpriced!
The curry crab was the only outstanding dish of what we tried but when I asked the host if the crab would be larger when it is back on the menu at regular price he said no. I know there are excellent curry crab at other restaurants that are more reasonably priced. No need to limit ourselves to this establishment.

Lunch special $16.95
We had the Thai and Vietnamese lunch set.
For the Thai lunch set, it comes with a chicken satay, pad Thai and veggie spring roll. The satay tastes good, with a rich and flavorful peanut sauce. It’s. 4.5 star.
For the Vietnamese lunch set, they grilled the pork chop to perfection and it comes with pineapple fried rice which was made really well. I would give them a 5-star

Quality of food: 5/5 – food was fantastic, the house special curry crab was so good, paired together with the roti was a perfect combination. The Hainan chicken was juicy and well seasoned. Loved the grilled oyster with garlic, must try.

Cleanliness: 5/5 – clean restaurant even during peak hours

Service: 5/5 – all of the servers were very friendly and took the time to explain the menu and recommend specials

Value for money: 4/5 – good prices for the fantastic food

Recommendation: 5/5 – great spot to get seafood. Recommend trying the curry crab (must get side order of roti), grilled oysters, and Hainan chicken. This restaurant deserves a detour from your trip to visit. Bring cash for payment. Make a reservation during peak hours.

One of the OG curry crab places in the Richmond Hill/Markham area.

Renovated and busy as ever.

Definitely need reservations.

Went for their grand reopening special.

Crab was good, but not as good as I remember it. Definitely have some rice dishes to go along with that sauce.

Small place, but the service and food quality is really good.

The place is pretty packed when we went on the weekend.

We ordered a variety of items, unfortunately I didn’t get to take photos of each one as we have devoured them . Only photo I have is the mini crabs, which I highly recommend!

Food portion size are good and flavourful

Always an outstanding experience. The food is unreal and the service unmatched. Highly recommend everyone get the iconic curry crab with some roti on the side, but also the Charbroiled Oysters (they’re massive), the Sambal Clams, the new Deep Fried Black Cod is delicious and honestly I haven’t had a dish that wasn’t good. Also, the Viet Coffee is great as well as the Sour Sop blended drink.

My family has been coming here for YEARS. I couldn’t tell you how many years ago we first started coming here and the quality has always been the same, amazing. There’s a reason it is always packed, we have tried a few different items but we always come back for the OG the Curry Crab it is phenomenal. Make sure you book a table they are busy! Everything is family style and big I definitely recommend coming with a bigger group (4+ people).
