i stopped by for an indian food pop-up, had toddy’s american chop suey and it was phenomenal. the decor and ambience chill yet sophisticated
the bad: you have to follow the Instagram to be aware of the next event’s time. also, some of these pop ups last only a few days. sometimes i felt there were service gaps – primarily waiting to be checked in and/or pay the bill) bc there was one busser. there should be a host dedicated to these tasks if logistically possible
will definitely be back. the neighborhood honestly doesn’t deserve this gem but i’m here for it
After a couple of months as a reservation-only, in-house prix fixe tasting menu restaurant, the Durango Social Club (DSC) switched to a pop-up chef showcase/incubator model. One of those pop-ups launched 04 December, the Toddy Shop® – The Little Indian Bar helmed by Chef Hemant Kishore.
Atmosphere: The decor does not seem to have changed a bit. Still a confusing mish-mash of elements which conveys in my opinion zero actual personality or story. The only acknowledgements to the Indian cuisine that I could see were the food menu and small inlaid brass bowls.
Ordered
Inji Puli Wings ($10): Five pieces, a mix of flats and drumsticks from short but very plump chickens. Meat was juicy all the way through. Sauce was the thick clingy type, plentiful enough to coat the popcorn-crisp skin, at a heat and spice level to clear one’s nose.
Gaikokujin Highball ($15): Bright, fizzy, and bittersweet citrus. Thought due to the lemon it would pair smoothly with the gingered wings, but forgot about the tonic aspect, which heightened my tongue’s sensitivity to the acidic pings in the sauce. Delivered a slow stealth buzz.
Value: Strong.
Service: Extremely convivial. The chef was in the kitchen and also toured the floor. Staff, a mix of DSC and Toddy Shop® front-of-house, such as seemed very passionate about the pop-up. Special mention to Bar Manager Erik, Olivia, and Elena for a very pleasant dinner.
etc
As of this review, the Toddy Shop®’s residency is indefinite and takes over DSC on Thursdays and Fridays, 5pm-9pm. Walk-ins only.

If I were to distill the Durango Social Club to one word, that word would be perplexing.
Advertised as an “intimate gathering place…[b]uilt for those who value connection” the space is on the smaller side with its capacity for 40-52 diners. The floor was arranged as a typical restaurant though; I had envisioned a more communal scene similar to é by José Andrés or Kaiseki Yuzu.
Decor was somewhat random. Color scheme was old-school club in rich brown and dark teal. Beyond that there was the lack of a discernible theme: pictures and knickknacks, a buoy-laden rope strung over a section of the bar counter, a suited frog candlestick, three different types and sizes of pendant lights. Plus a tree by the hostess stand. I guess it may be intended to spark questions, and it did but probably not in the manner DSC intended.
The perceived absence of a story extended to the food. The five-course dinner ($85) covered the typical animal kingdom – waterfowl, fish, land fowl, cow – plus dessert, but each dish IMO was isolated in taste, technique, and consistency. For examples-
The Course 2 rockfish* on my plate was significantly smaller than that of my companion, while my Course 3 quail was a larger bird than his.
Observing from the bar the searing of the fish, the steaks in the upper right corner got noticeably darker than the rest.
And as far as taste: I didn’t care for the texture of the Course 1 duck, nor for the blandness of the fish, and the Course 4 butchers** steak was rather chewy. The quail and all the plates’ sauces/garnishes were delicious.

The doors of the restaurant opened one hour prior to the 7pm dinnertime, to allow patrons to get their drink on. And so I did, because the creative behind the juicy tart and strong cocktails ($15, plus one comped) was Cami from Sparrow+Wolf.
Value: There for the drinks. On paper the food might also appear to have high value, but the execution was too uneven.
Service: Very engaging especially in that first hour; once the kitchen started cranking out plates the service remained friendly while focused on their tasks.

Unusual for a reservations-only, prix-fixe tasting menu-only spot, there were no amuse bouche nor final mignardises.
An 18% gratuity was automatically added to the check (was stated prior to booking this would be done).
On top of all that, they sneakily added an 18% charge to our bill without any warning—just a bunch of scammers and crooks. I’m going to tell all my friends, post it all over social media, and make sure nobody ever goes there. This place deserves zero stars. Don’t go there, ever. Last of all the place on Google maps is expensive restaurant, but it’s actually an awfull cheap and discusting burger place.
However, my card was later charged $326, despite ordering no drinks or add-ons. There was no explanation, no mention of an additional charge, and nothing on the bill to indicate why. It felt misleading and unprofessional, and it put a frustrating end to an already underwhelming meal. The Lili menu itself felt uninspired, (plus really small portion) especially at this price point.
On a positive note, Durango Social Club as a whole is a great concept, and the owner is very kind and welcoming. But in my experience, I would avoid the Lili pop-up—it simply isn’t worth it.
One of the most disgusting dining experiences I’ve ever had. The food was terrible, the place itself felt dirty and poorly run, and the service was below zero. Expect to wait at least an hour for your order, and when it finally arrives, everything will be piled on top of each other like they just threw it together.
The meat was burnt, over-salted, over-peppered, and completely inedible. Portions looked sloppy, and nothing tasted fresh. To make things even worse, the bill was higher than expected — they added extra charges and so-called “junk fees,” which felt dishonest and absolutely unacceptable.
In my personal opinion, this place operates in a way that feels like a scam. I would never return and strongly recommend that others avoid this restaurant. Total disappointment from start to finish.
