Carmela‘s is still one of my favorite Italian restaurants. Every time we have guests in town that I wanna go out for a nice dinner with, I would take them there. Their house wine is very nice and the lobster ravioli is very good. Love love love their Italian wedding soup that you can add on for $5 to your entree. You don’t get a free dessert for your birthday because we’ve celebrated a couple of birthdays and they still charged us for dessert but they always check in to see how our dinner was which I appreciate. The espresso martini is good, but I would probably skip the other cocktails since they’re a bit sweet. The bread with oil that they give you at the beginning is very tasty. Their arancini and mozzarella stick are very good as well and I really liked their vodka sauce so I’ll need to get that next time. The shrimp they use is very fresh.

The food here was so amazing! We sat at the bar to eat and the service was perfect. Friendly staff that also can make amazing drinks! It gets busy, so reservations are recommended. Put this one on your bucket list!

My husband and I drove around 3 hours to be able to celebrate Valentine’s Day at the place where we had our first date-Carmelas. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing to say the least, heavily impacted by the deceitfulness of our server, Crystal (according to the receipt). I ordered the cod that was on the Valentine’s Day Specials piece of paper. There was no mention of soup to my knowledge around the cod dinner and certainly no mention of it being an extra cost anywhere on that paper either, so following when I told the server I was going to be having the cod, she asked “and what soup?” So I thought perfect it comes with soup. Saying what she said sounds like it’d be included, right? Wrong! It was $5 extra for about five spoonfuls of soup in the flattest bowl you’ve ever seen in your life (it was basically a plate). If it’s an extra cost, it would’ve made sense to instead say, “Would you like to add the soup today?” Nope, that would’ve been too simple and honest. Usually Italian restaurants do include a soup or salad without any extra charge (especially with these prices), and I don’t come here often so how was I to know? After asking what the vegetable of the day was (which came with the cod dinner along with some risotto), I decided to ask if I could not get the veggie and instead sub it out for risotto, which was the other thing already with the cod as I said before. She said she could do that. What she didn’t tell me was she didn’t feel like doing it as a swap because guess what? I also had a $5 charge for a side of risotto. I know they probably don’t make the cod all of the time since it was on the specials menu so I’m trying to give the chefs a pass here, but it was piled with so much dry seasoning that was not at all incorporated in the dish. I had to scrape it off so it didn’t feel like I was chewing a mound of sand. I had an extremely bad migraine, and I wish I could’ve just canceled all together with this level of service, but I believe my husband said we would’ve gotten charged $20 to cancel it less than 24 hrs anyways. I remember the service and food to be so much better, and at this point, it might be time to just have a new “spot” for the two of us. Such a disappointment.

UPDATE: Replying to their reply… I couldn’t find a picture of their Valentine’s Day specials menu and I didn’t take a picture of it at the restaurant, but I found and am attaching several recent “Specials” menus I could find on their Facebook page. And guess what????!! ALL WITH NO MENTION OF SOUP ANYWHERE!!!! I didn’t even look at the regular menu since I found what I wanted off of the special menu. It’s one thing when an establishment can acknowledge their mistakes and fix them, and it’s another thing when they’d rather lie than own up to their mistakes. Should’ve kept the veggies as part of my order and tossed them at the waitress since I paid for them anyways. Save yourself the headache and dine somewhere else.

My husband and I are from out of town and decided to make a reservation here to celebrate our one year anniversary. Everything from start to finish was wonderful. Kaylee, our waitress, was exceptional. She immediately greeted us with a smile, she was very attentive to us during our entire dinner, and even surprised us with a little congratulations dessert at the end of our dinner. The food was amazing. We had the bruschetta, Lobster Ravioli, and the chef’s special soup. Everything tasted fresh.

If we ever return to South Bend, we would absolutely return to Carmella’s. And while we’re at it, we’d also go back to their bakery, Macri’s. 5/5 for us.

Carmelas has an amazing little snippet of Italy however it falls flat when it comes to cuisine.

Came in with my girlfriend for a birthday dinner. Was warmly greeted and sat down in what looked like a carving of italian scenery. Which was cool.

We ordered fried calamari and bruschetta for appetizers. Never in my life have I seen, nor is it italian, to have diced jalapeños or pickles on the calamari. Strange but okay. Lastly the bruschetta was good and loaded with tomatoes.

Lastly I ordered the Carbanara and my girlfriend ordered Vodka Gnocchi with meatballs. The carbanara was Not Good but its acceptable as its Indiana but I appreciate the effort but it was missing the egg base and resembled more if an Alfredo. My girlfriends gnocchi was better reheated but was good in the moment with the sauce. Nothing special but felt gummy and suspect packaging and not homemade.

Now I would return however I wouldn’t get the same thing nor would I reccomend any of what I got. Its ambience and service was wonderful but the food just did not hold up the other end of the noodle.

4/10. Would reccomend to visit but just get something hard to mess up.

Oh and it was pricy. For not great italian food. Tasted a lot like chef boyardi at times. The desert was the best part and that was pre-made.

We dined at Carmella’s Restaurant ladt night, with some imvited guests, including the pastor of St. Patrick’s Church in South Bend. There were seven of us in our party. The food amd atmosphere were lovely! For antipasto, we had warm olives, granato and calamari. All were superb! For the main course, I had the perch dinner, including fresh greens, risotto, and a house salad. My husband went for the baked lasagne. Delicious! The wait staff were attentive, without being intrusive. The owner circulated to be sure her guests were well taken care of. It was an overall pleasant dining experience. We will return often! Reservations recommended. Mange!

Excellent food, but the service was even better. I would highly recommend Carmela’s. We were treated as special guests.. the waitress found out it was our anniversary, and made sure we were very well taken care of. The food was amazing, and everything was perfect.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice and it takes you to another part of the world. The food was good. The lobster ravioli was ok but I’ve had much better. My husband enjoyed his bolognese and the waitress was able to accommodate his request to swap the pasta type and add extra bolognese.

Ate here to celebrate ND graduation. The food did not disappoint. Everyone enjoyed what they had ordered. We got calamaris friti for starters. It had a light crispy batter and a tender squid meat inside. It was seasoned well. It came with a marinara dip. Salads were not available that day being graduation day. Other orders were the scampi pasta, the lobster ravioli, home made lasagna, pollo scallopini, and the yellow lake perch.
