Zaranda reimagines the cuisine of Las Californias—the historic region once stretching from present-day Northern California to Cabo San Lucas—brought to life in downtown Houston by award-winning Chefs Hugo and Ruben Ortega. The restaurant asks a simple question: What if Alta and Baja California had never been divided? The answer is a cuisine sin fronteras—food without borders—rich in history, culture, and abundance. The name Zaranda comes from the traditional wire basket used for zarandeado, a centuries-old technique of grilling fish over an open flame, still beloved across Baja. Fittingly, seafood takes center stage on the menu, from lobster and octopus to clams and sea urchin.

Our server was great; friendly and helpful with recommendations! The drinks are good. I enjoyed the empanadas and ceviche. Brussels sprouts were perfectly cooked. The mariscos arroces were ok, I liked the clams. But the empanadas, ceviche and Brussels sprouts were phenomenal. The dessert was also good too! Perfect spot for girls night or date night

I already can’t wait to go again! Located right by Discovery Green, Zaranda is the perfect spot for a seafood-lover like me, although the menu has plenty of options for all preferences. My favorite dishes were the Taco de Pato, Tostada de Tiradito, and Arroz de Mariscos. They also have an extensive wine and cocktail list – I loved the Zaranda Rita, which is made with hibiscus. On top of that, the interior is gorgeous and our server, Manuel, made sure we were well taken care of.
Overall, the food, drinks, ambiance, and service were all 10/10. I would highly recommend visiting Zaranda, both for groups or for a date night downtown.

We had a great experience dining at Zarandas. All of the items we ordered tasted great. We ordered the ostiones asados (roasted oysters), mini tortas de res (small sliders), taco de pescado estilo baja (fish taco), taco de camarón (shrimp taco), ensalada Caesar (Caesar Salad), tostada de langosta (lobster tostada), tacos de lomo de res (steak taco) and the pescado zarandeado (grilled fish). The zaranda rita was also great. The standout items were the roasted oysters, the grilled fish, and the baja fish taco. I’d come back to have those again for sure and I’d want to try more items as well. The erizo Del Mar was good for dessert too.
Valet can be paid for at your table with your meal before heading out.

Made a reservation for dinner on January 31st. Our server, Patricia, was friendly, attentive, and explained a variety of dishes on the menu. The customer service was warm and thoughtful from start to finish. The food was fantastic too! My personal favorite was the table service for the Cesar salad and the Picanha! We can wait to bring the rest of our family soon!

We had dinner and what can I say, it was amazing. The manager, Elvis, made sure our experience was top of the line. Our waiter Manuel has alot of knowledge. He gave great recommendations and paired our food with drinks. For appetizers I highly recommend pan de oliva, ostiones asados. Also on Zarandeado the fish and octopus. If you’re not in the mood for seafood try the steaks. Don’t forget desserts. We are definitely going back. Thanks H-TOWN Restaurant Group.

Absolutely loved experiencing the soft opening of this stunning new downtown gem! The space is gorgeous—inviting patios with plenty of shade, a stylish interior, and a lively bar that was perfect for catching up with friends (and have you seen these beautiful drinks?!).
But the real star here is the food. Chef Hugo has created a menu that brilliantly blends the bold, vibrant flavors of fresh Alta California fare with a Baja CA coastal flare. Every dish bursts with flavor—beautifully presented, perfectly balanced, and impossible to stop eating (especially the Empanadas and Picanha sliced steak).
This spot is destined to be my new go-to for happy hour and dinner downtown. I can’t wait to come back once they are open daily.
