MAZU’s menu is inspired by Taiwanese, Israel/Palestine, and Indian cuisines. We are bringing beloved, rich flavors to share with the YS community and beyond, flavors that carry our own stories and experiences with them. We hope MAZU will not only be a space for amazing food, but also for art, collaboration and community. The dining experience is casual, with counter service and plenty of seating options. The space is wheelchair accessible and child friendly. The menu is fully vegan with several gluten free options. Hope to see you soon!

Our Order: The Standouts
The menu leans into the natural versatility of whole ingredients rather than processed meat substitutes. Our experiences over two visits, first in August and a return trip just a few weeks later, confirmed that the kitchen’s strength lies in its bold textures and authentic spices.
The Yansu Mushrooms (The Showstopper): These are, without question, the highlight of the menu. They consist of deep fried local oyster mushrooms sprinkled with toasted spices and fried basil. They provide a satisfying crunch and savory depth that was so compelling we returned specifically for another round.
The Sabich: This Iraqi Jewish pita sandwich features fried eggplant, potato, salad, tahini, and mango chutney. It is a dense, flavorful explosion of textures that we enjoyed during our visits.
Masala Chaat: This savory, spicy, and sweet mix includes bhel and sev, chickpea and potato curry, tomato, onion, chutneys, and cilantro. It is a complex dish that highlights the South Indian influences on the menu. Ordered again on my second visit.
Sustainability & Service
Service is casual counter style. There is a clear emphasis on sustainability, from sourcing produce through Guided by Mushrooms to encouraging guests to bring their own takeout containers.
The Verdict
MAZU succeeds by creating food that is exciting to everyone, regardless of their diet. It is a rare find in the Midwest: a place where the food has as much soul and history as it does flavor. It is the kind of spot that earns its reputation one order of Yansu mushrooms at a time.
The attention to detail from the food to the space itself is impressive. The Mazu Eats is not to be missed.
Falafel balls served on chopped salad with sev, tahini, mint, and sumac (GF). The presentation was beautiful and appetizing but the reality was unfortunately looks can be deceiving and in this case it absolutely was. The menu is inspired by diverse backgrounds, including Taiwanese, Israeli-Palestinian, and other cuisines. But what it’s not inspired by or infused with is flavor, seasonings or spice. The Guabao where was the five spice? The only thing good about this dish was the pickled radish’s which they only served 4 lil slices of smh. The Fattoush was also flavorless, gritty and dry and the “salad” it was served on top of was basically the same how does that happen. The tahini had no flavor the whole experience was unfortunately lackluster. I was so excited and ended up so disappointed. I came from out of town to experience this restaurant, the customer service was good and had more seasoning than the food. On a positive note the Mango Lassi was delicious and refreshing.
I’ve had here is above and beyond and tastes like something that supernaturally satiated my taste buds. The crew is fantastic, friendly and goes above and beyond. We are so happy they are in our little village and hopefully got a long time to come!
