Po’ Boy Opulence in the Garden District

The Garden District is a dangerous place to arrive hungry. One moment you’re admiring columns, balconies and houses the size of small European parliaments, the next you’re thinking deeply about sandwiches.

Fortunately, a New Orleans taxi oracle by the name of John had already solved this problem for us.

“Go to Mahony’s,” he said with the quiet authority of a man who knows where flavour lives.
He was correct.

Mahony’s Po-Boys sits comfortably among the Garden District grandeur, offering something just as opulent but significantly more edible: proper New Orleans po’ boys.

This was my first po’ boy experience, which felt like a responsibility. One does not approach such things casually. Happily, the signs were good from the outset. Brennan’s front-of-house staff were perched there enjoying their day off, which in hospitality terms is the equivalent of spotting Michelin inspectors quietly eating lunch incognito. Confidence immediately rose.

We started at the bar where Sam greeted us with warmth and competence. I asked for a proper non-alcoholic margarita and she produced exactly that. Bright, sharp and refreshing rather than the usual sugary apology some places attempt.

Out on the terrace, under that generous NOLA sunshine, Tim and Michael kept things running smoothly while we settled into the serious business of eating.

Shrimp po’ boys arrived. Golden, crisp and piled generously into bread that knew exactly what its job was. Fresh lettuce, tomato, remoulade and pickle providing the essential crunch and balance. A sandwich that understands architecture and matched its decadent surroundings.

Alongside came fried green tomatoes, perfectly crisp with that gentle tang that makes the whole table pause approvingly and smile rather devilishly. Fries were exactly what fries should be: hot, plentiful and impossible to leave alone.

The place had that perfect midday hum. Steady yet relaxed, locals drifting through, the terrace alive with conversation and sunshine.

John, if you ever read this, you nailed the recommendation. Keep shouting it out.

A Garden District stroll, a terrace table, a first po’ boy done properly and staff who know how to keep the whole thing flowing. Wicked venue.

This is a fantastic Diners-Driveins-and-Dives spot!!!! If you want to try a poboy in New Orleans this should be your stop! They have the classics and fantastic innovative versions. I got The Peacemaker and was a little hesitant because I am not a huge fried oyster fan but it blew me away! Our server said he doesnt like seafood and he loves that one. Its a must try! They also have some fun cocktails and classic sides. The service was phenomenal and it feels like a true local spot. They also have a lovely patio which was perfect for eating outside on a cool night! Its in the garden district which is close to downtown but also far enough away from the rowdy crowds on bourbon street. It still has plenty of character with a photo of Bruce Willis from Die Hard in the bathroom grate. Next time im in New Orleans this will be a must go stop.

This place was recommended to us by a local resident. I had the shrimp po’boy and my husband had the peacemaker which included shrimp, oysters, bacon, and cheddar cheese. The seafood was cooked perfectly and there were ample toppings. We wish there had been more sauce in the sandwiches and the sourdough bread was a little less chewy. Wine choices were very limited. Our server, Tim, spent a lot of time describing the po’boys and making recommendations. Also, he checked on us frequently.

We were looking for something authentic to New Orleans, outside the commercialized, mass produced foods and the French Quarters. Mahoney’s is a neighborhood bar/grill offering their own twist to local favorites. The shrimp po-boy with sweet glazed bacon and melted cheese was fabulous. We loved the onion rings (just beware of the dipping sauce, it has a KICK!), mushroom boudin balls, rice and beans, and fried green tomatoes. All unique and full of flavor. Our server, Tim, had excellent meal suggestions and was so fun to talk with.
Don’t expect a fancy dining experience or shiny decor, Mahoney’s is the classic “hole-in-wall” with excellent food and companionship.

The “Cubano” po boy was delicious! The meat was so tender. First time trying fried green tomatoes and thoroughly enjoyed- the remoulade sauce it came with was so good we put up a protest when our waiter went to take it away! He was so nice to even grab us some extra

HOLY MOLY PO’ BOYS! A group of 7 of us all got po’ boys and every single one was outstanding! The egg rolls and boudin balls are a must! Frozen espresso martinis are exceptional! Our server, Will, was absolutely wonderful!! He treated us like family and took great care of us. We will be back when we come into town! again for sure.

I was really disappointed with my experience at Mahoney’s. I ordered a shrimp po’boy, and the bread size was completely off — far too small for a real po’boy. Because of that, everything kept falling out, and it ended up being so messy it felt like I was eating a taco instead of a sandwich.

I literally ended up with shrimp, pickles, and sauce all over myself and the table. For the price — and for a place known for po’boys — I expected much better quality and basic functionality.

Mahoney’s really needs to fix the bread size and structure, because right now it’s not even close to an authentic po’boy experience. If you want a true New Orleans-style po’boy, this is nowhere near what you’d get at Parkway Bakery.

I just stopped for a short trip in New Orleans while I was driving from Texas to Florida I wanted a poboy and I was so impressed with the Poboys here! The best poboy I had in New Orleans and the service was incredible! I sat at the bar Brandon was so helpful and gave me great entertainment and conversation! I got a shrimp poboy with bacon and dressed! Very impressed I will be back! It’s so nice to go to a dead bar alone in the middle of the day on a Sunday and have a great time! You know I had to take some poboy togo too to eat it in Florida!!! I now regret not bringing more!!!
