I will say the only negative is there was a bit of a crowd and the girls were confused about orders, so they should work on crowd management more, but when I sat down to eat my food, that was no longer an issue for me lol.
They do have one strong selling point. Their teri and yeobo sauces pack a punch! Dip a little bit of meat in one, take a bite, and enjoy a concentrated collaboration of sweet and tangy flavors.
And that’s it.
Both the Pulehu chicken and Kaula pig were cooked well. The pig was about average as far as pork goes. It was quite juicy, but its overall flavor was somewhat underwhelming. The chicken was easy to pull apart and had good texture. However, it was just a smidge dry and quite bland! If they put any seasoning on it besides salt and pepper, then maybe, just maybe there was a smidgeon of garlic and chili.
The white rice was cooked with the right amount of water, but otherwise, it was just white rice.
Now the veggies… I took one star off for this! They were a soft, soggy, sad, spiritless pile of overcooked MUSH in the takeout box! They would have been gag-worthy if I wasn’t so hungry! I find it hard to believe they were seasoned with anything else other than some saltwater because they were BLAND! I expect an established chain like Mo’ Bettahs to do a little bit of vegetable magic, but I can make better veggies at home with an air fryer, some actual seasoning, and 20 minutes.
The price you pay for the portions you get is pretty generous, but for the quality, I’d rather go eat In & Out.
If you made it to the end of this review, I suggest Island Grinds instead. It’s literally across the street is much better. For a farther drive, I suggest “Taste of the Caribbean” for a flavor trip to tropical islands, but of the Atlantic variety.
hubby and I stopped here on our way to the Salt Lake City airport because we wanted to grab lunch first.
Found them on Google reviews and so wanted to check them out. Definitely Hoppin, great atmosphere and friendly staff. We didn’t understand what a ‘regular’ plate meant and it is so much food. We could’ve easily shared one. When the lady asked me if I wanted a mini or a regular size, I didn’t know what that meant. I do now.
The flavors are absolutely amazing. We both had teriyaki chicken, he got the Kahlúa pork and I got the Katsu chicken. All of it was extremely tasty and the macaroni salad is fantastic. Highly recommend stopping in here if you’re in town. Wish we had one of these up in the Portland, Oregon area .
