Will stick to dosa / idli next time.
The restaurant was packed even on a holiday, showing how popular it is. If you want authentic South Indian flavors in Austin, Kuppanna is a must-visit. Can’t wait to go back!
The Chicken Kongu Biryani is outstanding, and the Chicken Kongu Curry with parota is something we keep going back for. The flavors are rich, authentic, and consistently good every single time. You can really taste that traditional Kongu style.
I also ordered catering from them recently, and they absolutely delivered. Everything was well packed, on time, and the food quality was just as good as dining in.
What really impressed me was their Kongu chicken curry. The taste is very close to what I used to get at Savaji Hotel back in my hometown, which says a lot. It’s not easy to find that kind of authenticity.
If you’re in Austin and craving proper Kongu-style food, this place is definitely worth trying. Highly recommend.
Let’s start with the food. Every single item in the thali was stone cold. Not “slightly warm” or “could be hotter” cold, I mean straight from the refrigerator cold. We pointed this out multiple times, and each time the server politely took the dish back, returned it, and confidently said, “sir, its hot now”. Apparently microwaves are doing overtime here.
Then there was the ghee rice. This deserves an award of its own. It was so cold it could’ve qualified as weather equipment during Austin’s ice storm. When we mentioned it to one of the female staff taking orders, we were told, “sir, this was made in the morning, we cannot heat it, you have to eat it cold. If we heat, rice becomes hard”.
Moments later, she brought out a steaming hot veg biryani from the microwave. Apparently, the rice in veg biryani doesn’t become hard when reheated/microwaved.
At this point, I assume the owner noticed the chaos and came over. He took my thali and replaced it with a new one. The replacement included three fully microwaved items (biryani, chicken, and mutton), while the fish and other items remained impressively cold. We had ordered two thalis, but only one was replaced, consistency is clearly not their strong suit.
After nearly an hour at the restaurant, we had to call the server to figure out how to drink water. They had thoughtfully placed a water jug on the table, but no glasses. When the glasses finally arrived, they were filthy, one even had something inside it. Photo attached for anyone curious.
No cutlery. No water glasses. Bad bad service. For almost every item listed in the thali menu, we had to ask whether it was available and if we could please get some, because apparently ordering a thali doesn’t mean you actually get everything in it.
Avoid this place. There are far better restaurants that are actually worth the money you money.
Oh, and yes—obviously I tipped 0.
