However, after placing our order, it took about 35 minutes for our food to arrive. It was a bit disappointing to see families who arrived after us receive their meals earlier.
When the food finally came, the portion size was very generous — honestly, I felt like one piece would have been enough! The flavor of the fish itself was excellent and fresh.
That said, the batter was inconsistent. In some areas it was not crispy and had a doughy texture. It was confusing because the color and appearance suggested the fish was fully fried, and frying it longer might have burned it. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the soft, doughy texture of the batter in certain parts.
Overall, it was a mixed experience. The service and atmosphere were great, and the fish flavor was very good, but the long wait time and batter texture could be improved.
Special shoutout to Randy, our server so friendly and always checking if we needed anything 5 star for him
Sharing a photo from that night because it was such a great experience!
While waiting for the ferry at Horseshoe Bay, we decided to stop in at Trolls. The place was busy, but we were seated fairly quickly, and from that moment on, the service absolutely stood out.
In fact, for the very first time ever, I’m giving out my personal Golden Server Award and it goes to our server at Trolls. I wish I had caught his name, because he was simply outstanding. We asked about the rotating beer tap, the option wasn’t really our style. But without us even asking, he brought over a small sample so we could try it, turns out, it was actually pretty good. That little extra effort really impressed us.
The food was great as well. I had a bacon cheeseburger that was delicious, while my wife enjoyed a hearty split pea soup with a generous serving size. As she was finishing up her soup and I had polished off my burger, our server came by again and offered to grab me some extra fries—just one more example of him going above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of.
The service was friendly, thoughtful, and honestly some of the best we’ve experienced. Thanks to our incredible server, Trolls gets a glowing review from us. We’ll definitely be back!
Pros: cool atmosphere.
Cons: service was almost nothing – nobody asked us if our meal was okay (spoiler: it was not okay). Nobody came to refill our coffee. We had to ask for our bill twice from two different people before we got it.
My “french toast” was actually just weird fried egg bread with a thick layer of just egg on one side of it (see photo). I barely ate any and since nobody came to check on us, some kid just took the plate away without asking about it and we paid for the uneaten weird egg bread.
Maybe the fish and chips are great but I still would not count on the service. Absolutely horrible.
We ordered the chowder soup and fish and chips. I’ve had chowder at many different restaurants, and I can honestly say this was by far the most watery one I’ve ever had. Chowder is usually creamy, with a balanced texture, but this one was nothing like that and was overloaded with vegetables. It didn’t resemble a proper chowder at all.
The fish and chips were extremely bland and under-seasoned, and the fries were soft and mushy instead of crispy.
