At Sullivan’s, they build on their customer experience framework with Bailey (General Manager), Anna (Assistant General Manager), and the third point of this dining experience triangle, Laura, the Front of House Supervisor.
When our friend Lindsey had her birthday, daughter in tow and parents in town, she asked for “great places to eat,” and we didn’t hesitate to recommend this dining establishment that could handle a nine-top. As we anticipated the evening’s delights, the thought of laughter echoing around the table and the mouthwatering scent of seared steak created a vivid picture of a perfect gathering.
The evening started with Bailey making our reservation over the phone. When Laura heard it was us, she had a choice between Sullivan’s “Library” or the more intimate “Boardroom.” Other nights it was booked so often, we were concerned we couldn’t book this, but luck, and Laura, would have it that there was no corporate booking of the latter. Earlier last year, it was booked for the creator of Microsoft. It is a stately-looking, dark-wood enclosed room that provides the perfect setting for intimate dinners seating up to twelve people. Laura knew our nine-top would fit nicely. Room. Check. Amazing server – up on deck. Check.
My wife and I walked in and basked in the glow of Anna’s light, warmth, and charm behind her speckled frames. You may come in as new acquaintances, but you leave as friends. She led us to the Boardroom, and that is when Laura, Front of House Supervisor, quickly and effortlessly took over for the rest of our lovely evening. Laura queried: “Would you like your regular cocktails?” My wife was pleasantly surprised as she said, “Laura! You remembered from last time?!” Belonging to Sullivan’s VIP literally has its “rewards.” Laura remembers what we had at earlier dining experiences, which allows her to offer favorites and to even recommend future favorite dishes and cocktails.
When Lindsey, the night’s birthday honoree, arrived, Laura gracefully guided the new patrons through the menu. She pointed out the must-have steaks and highlighted the finer nuances of the enhancements section. After deliberation, Laura proposed a shared steak platter so everyone could sample five perfectly pink cuts. Her keen eye also determined the ideal number of side dishes we needed, and her fourteen-plus years of experience with Sullivan’s shone through.
After we were thoroughly sated by the selections, dessert and singing did not disturb anyone on the restaurant floor. Dessert was one of the “must-haves” that Laura surmised we definitely needed! It did NOT disappoint! The moist, rich, satiny feel left our taste buds tantalized. Again, Laura’s tour of the menu delivered in aces!
If you want a terrific steakhouse, go to Sullivan’s.
If you want the best experienced tour guide and head of the class in catering to your dinner desires, demand that Laura assist you!
“Best of the Best!”
Our reservation was at 5:00 PM for a party of six, and we let our waiter know right away that we were going to a show at the Orpheum at 7:30 so we needed to be out in time. Despite that, the service felt very slow from the start. Our drinks took about 15 minutes to arrive, and we eventually had to ask our server if we could place our food order.
Two people in our group ordered soup, which oddly didn’t arrive until the same time as our entrees and sides. By that point, it felt more like an afterthought than a course.
As for the food, it was very mixed. The sea bass was good, and the sweet potato casserole and spinach were both excellent. However, the steak lacked flavor and was tough and overcooked, which was disappointing for a steakhouse. The lamb was just okay and also could have used more flavor. The Brussels sprouts were so bad we considered sending them back.
Because we were concerned about making it to our show, we asked for the check as soon as our food arrived. Even then, things moved slowly. Eventually we had to ask another server to help track down our waiter because it was already around 7:10 and we still needed our food boxed and our checks returned after paying.
Overall, the experience didn’t live up to what we expected from an established upscale restaurant. There were a few bright spots with certain dishes, but between the slow service and inconsistent food, it was disappointing
