The food here was absolutely delicious, I’ve never had Ethiopian food so I don’t know what to compare with but I’m a Nigerian that appreciates great flavors. I had the deluxe vegan and added lamb tibbs and it was chefs kiss. If you like hot spicies add the red mitmita it’s amazing kinda like suya spice. The atmosphere was lively for a winter night, you need reservations for sure. Customer service was lovely too. I recommend

I’m visiting DC from NY and I’ve always wanted to try Ethiopian food! So I found this place near my hotel and decided to treat myself to a solo dolo date. Only a 7 min walk in the cold but totally worth it. The place was super warm when I got there and they welcomed me in to sit at the bar since they were closing within the hour.

All I knew was that I needed veggies in my system and boy, did they DELIVER!?! They brought my food within 10 min of me ordering! I wish I remembered the name of this dish but it was a deluxe vegan dish with the injera (spongey flatbread) and eating with my hands was such a fun experience. I paired it with a glass of sweet Ethiopian white wine and it was so tasty.

I’d say that the only thing they could’ve done better on was being a little more attentive with me if I needed anything. That’s literally the only reason I didn’t give 5 stars. Other than that, I’d definitely come back here to try everything else on the menu!!

For my last day in DC I was torn between Bbq or Ethiopian cuisine; sooo glad I picked this restaurant. I’ve had Ethiopian food before in Canada yet every place has it’s own savour.
Got the Vegan Special and I had a chance to try some items for the first time. I was truly enchanted since every bite had something unique to offer. My favourite were the String beans and red lentils. Really wanted to try Berbere chicken but it wasn’t offered in any of the combos so that was a miss for me.
Overall I left satisfied.

We had a nice experience overall at Checher DC. The food was flavorful and satisfying — we ordered one lamb plate, two beef plates, honey wine, and two sambosas. Everything tasted good, especially the main dishes. The only downside was that the sambosas came out cold, which was a little disappointing. Other than that, we enjoyed the meal and appreciated the variety of flavors.

I walked in on a Tuesday as soon as they opened and was welcomed with the beautiful Ethiopian incense (እጣን). What a surprise! I was visiting from North Carolina and wanted to grab a quick lunch before my train back to NC.

The restaurant is beautiful, homey and unique. I loved the greetings on the door in many different languages. The waitress/managers were all lovely and knowledgeable. I didn’t want alot of onions on my tibs but she advised it may affect the taste and that I can remove the ones I didn’t want. She was right! I had the Chercher Special Tibs and it was amazingly tender, delicious.

Thank you for the hospitality and food. I shall return when I’m in town again!

Overall, this was a solid experience with some real highlights. The vegetable platter was definitely the standout, very flavorful, well seasoned, and satisfying. The portion sizes were generous, and the spiced tea was really good and nicely balanced, not overpowering.
My only critique is texture-related: I personally prefer my yellow split peas to be softer, and some parts were a bit firmer than I like. My friend ordered the chicken tibs, and while they were okay, they didn’t taste as fresh as expected. That said, no one got sick, so it may have just been an off moment rather than a bigger issue.
All in all, the food was good, the vegetarian options really shined, and I’d come back, especially for the veggie platter and tea. With a little more consistency, this could easily be a go-to spot.

Incredible food and great service. Would definitely recommend the beef tibs special and the vegan sampler platter to try everything. Probably the best restaurant we ate at in DC!

Had lamb and a variety of vegetarian varieties for dinner a few times last month. All came presented nicely and warm on the plate. Meals were individually well seasoned with the right amount of berbere and other typically used spices in Ethiopian cooking. The heat level was adjusted to our liking upon request. Ordered their spice tea – very soothing. You’ll eat what seems a popular, well established place: Cozy, warm, with Ethiopian sounds playing, packed with eaters each time we went.

Sooooo delicious! I had the vegetarian sampler. They gave extra injura – nice not to have to worry about running out. Nice, clean sink area to wash hands before eating. I pretty much guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

First time having Ethiopian I believe. Beef tibs special #2 was bomb, the Ethiopian lager I had was solid, and I look forward to trying doro wat next time. If you’re white as hell like me, be prepared that the beef tibs are served without utensils as is customary. I just didn’t know that and it kinda threw me lol

The service I will say could be improved. I came in by myself which is not uncommon for me, but they put me at a table that probably shouldn’t even be a table – half of the only decent seat at that table faces the brick wall. It honestly felt a little insulting – like “Sit here up against the wall, loser”

It wasn’t busy when I came in either though it did get busy by the time I left close to 7 pm. Next time I’ll sit at the bar to avoid relegation to the lonely table

My server was nice but pretty quiet and wasn’t getting it when I kept asking her to repeat herself. Also didn’t ask me how I was doing once. The woman bringing injet was very attentive and rapid to get me more when I ran out.
