Vincent DePhilippis Born in New York NY, raised in Naples Italy returned to New York City at the age of 18. Vincent DePhilippis and Madeleine Manfredi from Nimes France met in New York NY (Mamma and Papa) married in 1925, then settled in Westchester Pennsylvania. Then moved to San Diego in 1947 where they opened an Italian market named Cash & Carry Italian foods on India Street in San Diego. 1950 was the beginning of what has become a very successful line of family restaurants that are today know as Filippi’s Pizza Grottos that are owned and operated by original family members of the founders. The DePhilippis family would like to welcome you and your family to visit our restaurants to enjoy our traditional old Italian family recipes.

Such a cozy, old school pizzeria vibe! They offer pizzas, sandwiches, salads, and lots of Italian faves like lasagna and ravioli. Everything we have had from here has tasted great! My only critique – the food could sometimes be a little hotter.

The pizza was excellent. The bill was not. We ordered a chicken alfredo pizza, which was the pizza of the month. My wife requested a couple of extra toppings to be added to the pizza. Well, that transformed the pizza into a create your own pizza with every single topping charge separately. We wound up paying about $40 for a medium pizza. The food is good, just be very careful how you order.

We walked in as a family of 4 adults and a child. We got seated and got our order taken. The salad arrived and we didn’t have any utensils which we had asked our server to provide them to start eating. Minutes went by and we were all just starring at the salad so we ended up grabbing utensils from an unoccupied table next to us. By the time our server came with utensils we had already started eating. No biggie, it happens and we were also hungry. We ordered the kids meal which includes a drink and a dessert. We got the kids lasagna and when it finally arrived it was barely warm and the meat sauce tasted like soap. We ordered a combination plate of spaghetti and ravioli and the pasta waa literally cold like they had it in the fridge and microwaved it for a few seconds and pulled it out before it even got warm. We also ordered the works pizza which also arrived barely warm to the point that the huge amount of once melted cheese that sit on top of the pizza was already solidified again so it was hard to even eat.
Such a disappointing dinner. It was one of those times I honestly didn’t even want to leave a tip but my FIL is too nice and tipped anyway but we all agreed food and service was subpar to say the least.
Oh and we never got the dessert that came with the kids meal

Been coming to this location since early 1970s and I’m sorry to say this location has changed and not for the good . Ordered a lunch special with 1/2sandwhich and house salad. Well my sandwich was so toasted you couldn’t eat it . My house salad had lettuce , 1 slice tomato and a few beans . I did ask for no croutons. Med pepperoni pizza . Use to be the best pizza but now skimpy on the cheese . One of reasons we order pizza is because of cheese . Will have to go to a different location like Santee .

Treated my mom to a 2nd Moms Day lunch, noon Wed., here and it left a great impression on her.
We had:
**Medium everyting Pizza-its was loaded perfectly and blanketed by a generous layer of mozzerella to keep the goodness from falling out during ur bite. Non greasy at all-dee-lisj with a perfect firm base crust.
**soups-moms clam chowder was fresh and she loved it. Got her a large one to take home. I had the minestrone-flavorful, loaded and hearty- warmed us up on a cool breezy day.
** sausage-tasty
** service-didnt catch her name, a Mature Latina in her 40/50’s. Attentive despite juggling 5 tables. Our drinks never were empty. SHE was on her game. ….
Overall…..def coming back.

The food is a great deal for the price, and pretty good. The service did take a while and they initially forgot some items. But we were a large group so maybe if you are with a smaller party this would not be a problem.
