Social Profile:

The Washington Street Diner has been a part of Athens, Alabama’s downtown commerce for many years, but ownership and operation has more recently been transferred to Friendship Church. Friendship’s mission for the Diner is to provide the community with a place to enjoy a made-to-order Southern breakfast and great fellowship with neighbors, while providing food service training to the short term employees. Some of the Diner’s employees are short term because once they have completed their training, they find permanent employment in the food service industry using their newfound skills. Then another person steps in to begin the training process, and the cycle continues. One of the goals of the church is to help people in the community overcom

Super small portions and food is not any better than what you make a home . I believe in supporting local restaurants but save your time and money and go else where

Original Post:
Super good food and very friendly people! Situated by the Court House and next to the railroad tracks. Nothing like eating a great plate of food and hearing the train rumble by. Kinda makes you feel like you’re in Mayberry! This is a must experience place. Thank you!

I’ve passed this place a hundred times and I’m so glad I stopped in. This is such a great southern breakfast place! Service was amazing, everyone was so friendly, food was a great price, so fresh and filling. I will be bringing my husband back.

It was just fine. It’s a hole in the wall diner with Waffle House level food/service/atmosphere.

Don’t go in thinking you’re entitled to being worshipped by staff and you’ll be fine.

If you can get anything for under $10 these days, it’s gonna look and taste like it looks and taste. Be grateful.

I’d happily go back.

Warm friendly greeting followed by prompt service, good coffee, and good down-home cooking. The gravy could use a bit more flavor, perhaps a bit of sausage, but otherwise, everything was top-notch.

Absolutely abysmal. The staff was unfriendly, to the extent that we felt as though we were putting them out by spending our money there. Arrived at 1:15 (door and Google said they closed at 2). Disappointed that this “diner” didn’t have soup on their limited menu, but after a quick glance at the menu ordered a simple cheeseburger and fried bologna & cheese sandwich. My GF asked if they could do grilled onions on her burger, and got a grunted “we could do that”. The server then asked whether we’d like chips or hash browns with our sandwiches and we opted for chips. I added an iced tea. The food was dropped off (still not a smile or welcoming word spoken). The smallish burger was slightly larger than a McDonald’s single burger and the bologna sandwich featured a single 1/8″ slice of bologna and a single slice of Kraft American cheese. The burger was reportedly fine and my sandwich was something my 4 year old granddaughter could’ve prepared. It was explained that the chips were additional (we didn’t ask for them, they were casually offered). Never implied that they were an add-on. The unhappy server spent the entire time which we were there (20 minutes total) with her jackets on and bag on the table, staring at us to finish this subpar, overpriced, lunch. I am not one to slam a small business (see my 200+ Yelp reviews). My recommendation would be to chose ANYWHERE ELSE to support in Athens. The attitude was poor, the food below average in quality and low on the value scale. Really a bad experience overall. These ungrateful folks don’t deserve your time or money.

Food is delicious. This is my new favorite breakfast place in town. There is limited seating, but it is as you would expect in a small restaurant just off the Town Square. We consider it part of the overall ambiance of the diner. The biscuits and gravy with fried bologna and sliced tomatoes are some of my favs.
