So I ordererd the 6bone rib(didnt fall of the bone but good…and veryy saucey) plate with mac and cheese ( looked like it was over cooked noodles smushed together in cheese- but the flavor was giving k&w )and yams. We also ordered 1 turkey wing over a tiny bed of rice.(Jist ok needed more flavor).. with mac and cheese(looked like it was chopped up and smushy)and yams(they were ok). A pork chop (done but super soft ..no crunch..and underseasoned )with 1 side collard greens(spicy but good) we ordered 5 whole wings with cabbage(it was ok) and fries. The fries were good but they were curly fries even though the fries in the picture showed “waffle fries” …..Lastly a slice of banana pudding cake ……sighhh….didnt like it.
We waited about 30 mins so we had a drink while we waited…guy came out was cool…you could tell he wasnt the bartender but he made good drinks…malibu on the rocks $10… Crown and coke $10..
When we got our food we checked and realized the chicken and cabbage wasnt in the bag so we had to get it re ordered i guess bc now all the people from the back had come up front to order their food and ….bc i had to wait another 25mins and when i asked if it was ready they were handing it to another lady….but realized i was waiting amd gave it to me. Thank goodness so i checked bag…didnt have my ranch but now there was a line and i couldnt get anyones attention so i just left…..sat outside…..took pics and tried the food ..which was luke warm at this point
….The inside was a nice space they had good music playing some RnB…..TBH we wanted to support….however, we didnt even eat all the food we picked over it … Sooo $80 later..not including the drinks or tips….i just felt bamboozled. Im good …no desire to try again.
When I pulled up, it was dark outside, so I couldn’t see the inside of the building from the outside. On top of that, there was a Butner Police van parked along the side of the business, which made me a little suspicious and unsure of what to expect. However, once I walked through the doors, I was pleasantly surprised—it was actually a really nice spot.
The lady who took my order was personable, and the bathroom was clean, which I always appreciate. My order did take a bit longer than expected, especially since there was hardly anyone inside, but I assumed that meant the food was going to be on point.
The fish and shrimp were cooked well and served at the appropriate temperature. Unfortunately, the sides were not even warm. The mac and cheese, in particular, was extremely salty—and I’ve never had salty mac and cheese like that before. It wasn’t subtle at all; it was overpowering. What confused me even more was that the hard, baked top layer wasn’t salty, but the portion underneath it definitely was.
I also found it a bit odd that a Spanish guy wearing a black sweater handed me my bag of food from the back, and as I walked away, a Caucasian guy wearing a blue shirt suddenly came around the corner with what looked like a shoe print in the middle of his shirt. That stood out to me. It also didn’t help that, where I live, there have been culprit(s) loitering on a second-floor table in a common area of my apartment building. The very next day after my visit to TruSoul, there was a plethora of kitchen items on that table along with two pairs of boots—four shoes total. Two of the shoes were burgundy, and the other two were black-and-white snake print. Given that context, the shoe-print shirt immediately caught my attention.
I don’t live in the area, so turning around to get a replacement wasn’t doable. I did call about the issue, but I haven’t heard anything back yet.
Overall, the spot is visually appealing and the service was good. However, today I heard a preacher say, “Why enjoy what’s not working?” and that really resonated with me. Based on my experience—especially with the sides—I won’t be returning to the restaurant. While there were some positives, the issues outweighed them for me. I’d rate this experience 2 out of 5 stars.
My check number was #91.
They run out of tartar sauce so my catfish was dry given that they don’t have any other sauces besides mayo and ketchup. But I’ll try it again.
Flounder sandwich was incredible and generous. Clearly freshly fried. An absolutely steal at the price.
Ribs were fall off the bone and delicious! String beans and Mac and cheese did not disappoint.
House made sweet tea was lovely.
I can’t wait to try the double chocolate cake but I’m too full of everything else!
