Hip restaurant serving sushi & Asian-fusion cuisine boasts a large bar with happy hour.

The menu is very varied. There is something for everyone. My company and I had sushi and the tuna tartar with crab salad(exact name of dish I cannot recall) as an appetizer. They were both okay. The tartar was overwhelmed with tuna and not much flavors to balance out the dish. The sushi rice lacked flavor. For our mains, the beef broccoli with rice and pad thai; they both were okay. The pad thai lacked flavor, the beef broccoli was good.
The service was lovely even for the restaurant being busy. The restaurant was clean and we did not wait long for a table.

Definitely one of my most favorite sushi spots. The atmosphere is cozy and the service is always impeccable. Today, my server was Hannah and she was very sweet and attentive.

The Chirashi Bowl here is amazing. Super fresh fish, perfectly seasoned rice, and a really generous portion. Sitting at the sushi bar is an experience as you can see the skill and care the sushi chefs place onto the orders. Everything was beautifully arranged and tasted incredible — definitely one of the best I’ve had. Can’t wait to come back for it again!

I was in Charleston for work and WOW — this place was so good I went twice! The sashimi platter presentation was beautiful, with a great selection and generous cuts of fish. I also tried the chicken lettuce wraps, which were fantastic. The sake happy hour is another highlight. If I lived in the area, I’d definitely be a regular!

This is our family to go to each week (once or twice or even more) place. We live in West Ashley, but before last year, my family had lived in multiple continents and states in the US. We are crazy sushi lovers, focusing on the cooking skills of the rice, the innovativeness of sushi design (nowadays, this in the States are not exactly the same in Japan), and the freshness of sashimi. I am not saying Zen is the best but it is one of the best and I feel lukcy that we have it just 3 miles away. All signatures are great, the sashimi is always fresh, and the other dishes (my son and friends sometimes ordered some fried rice with beef, shimp, or chicken) are said good. I particularly love the avocado eel, which are lunch specials if you go before 3 pm. But it is a must-order even if we go after special lunch offer windows. Two-thumbs is my favorite in the signature (it is warm and it has a combination of good stuff including my love eel), followed by holly molly (deep fried but with layers of flavors) and Sam Rittensburg. The others are also good but this is only my personal opinion. My only complaint is the Sake: too small a bottle and too pricy given the volume served. I understand it is the price appreciation that caused everything to inflate prices. So we opted out of Sake each time and will enjoy Sake at home watching TV, but focus on rolls and sashimi. In the photo I pasted, the green wrap is two-thumbs, the round one with red source in the center is Holy Molly, and the smaller ones aside is avocado eel (you must order it). I forgot the others but you can ask the staff by ordering by photos, like I always do.

The food was delish! So good that I went back the following night for takeout . Even the fried rice with minimal ingredients was flavorful. I don’t know what they add to the asian wings but they were a hit twice even with our toddler.

Zen looks quite nice on the inside, and our server was truly warm and helpful. That was the best part of the experience. The food was fine, but if you’re a serious sushi lover, this won’t be your go to place. It was fresh and very pretty to look at. The special roll with spicy tuna, avocado and tobiko was pretty good and simple. The salmon nigiri was fresh, but did not have much flavor. Salad was fine – the dressing was more like a mayonnaise than that sharper, more flavorful gingery dressing that we prefer. Overall, not bad.

I ate there 2 days ago! Fast and wonderful service!! Can’t remember the bartenders name but she had blonde hair and rather tall. She was great. She deserves a raise! I sat in the corner bar chair and was in and out and my belly was full.

We have been patrons of Zen for years. We frequent this location at least once a month, but tonight was the last time we will be spending our money here.
Situation: Tonight, we noticed one of the bus boys had a very strong and pungent body odor that was thrown in our faces every time he passed by our table (which was in a busy area). The smell was ruining our experience because we were trying to enjoy our food, but could not ignore our senses.
I respectfully went to the front desk staff and mentioned that we would like to be moved to a different area and NOT to say anything to the bus boy—we did not want anything said to him at that moment because we believe thats a conversation for them to have with him in private and with respect. . The front desk employee said “oh yes–I know exactly what you are talking about” as if there had been prior complaints.
The manager (Katarina) came over to our table and asked what the problem was. After I told her, she said (with attitude) “well moving you to another table is not going to solve your problem because the bus boys walk all around here. (although this is true, there would be less traffic at other tables). She continued to say “we do not judge here and some people prefer to be natural” (again—fine, but if it is effecting peoples experience then it needs to be addressed. You are in the service industry. There is a reason why you don’t sit customers next to the bathrooms, right?)
She then went onto say that she will go and tell him not to walk past our table, in which I told her that was unnecessary and he didn’t need to be told–not now while he is working. She decided she would tell him anyways and likely enjoyed the opportunity to do so, since she needed to feed her stuck up ego.
We spend the rest of dinner getting side eyed looks from her and the bus boy. At that point we were made to feel like crap for saying something instead of receiving some sort of understanding and professionalism in handling the situation. All you had to do, Katarina, was acknowledge our complaint and handle it by moving us to a less busy area. Instead, you chose to get snarky with customers and then likely hurt the feelings of one of your employees.
Im sorry, but I dont feel bad for my complaint. Everyone should be able to enjoy their food without smelling the BO or cigarette smoke of wait staff. YOU ARE A SERVICE INDUSTRY, Hunny! Only thing you are serving is you nasty attitude—-and NO, we will not be having dessert.
