Welcoming and friendly customer service. I managed to meet with the owner during our visit. Easy to read menu. Reasonable prices. Tasty puff puff and good portion sizes. Authentic takeout serving authentic Nigerian cuisine.

I ordered gbegiri and amala from here and it was terrible. The stew was a strange, off-colored mash with no separation—no visible layers of gbegiri, ewedu, or stew the way it’s supposed to be, and barely any ewedu at all. It didn’t even resemble the dish.

I grew up in Lagos eating this meal and regularly ordered from Platinum Amala (before the downtown Silver Spring location closed), so I know exactly how it should look and taste.

I’ve ordered from Rhuth African before and genuinely thought they gave me the wrong dish because what I received looked nothing like gbegiri, ewedu, or stew in any form.

I gave them another chance a few weeks later, and it was still just as bad. At this point, it’s clear they do not know how to properly prepare gbegiri and ewedu.

Completely unacceptable and a total waste of money.

Drove over 30 min away just for him to say they didn’t have the fried spinach, when I told him I was on the way! Walked in here, food not ready. Now he says sorry we don’t have. Unprofessional!

Update: Response to owner

Thank you for responding, however it should have been told to me on the phone before driving way out there. I asked if the container was circular or square, because photos are showing both. He kept saying black container. How am I supposed to know as a NEW customer that just moved from out of state, that the fried spinach is just for catering? I went to Roger Miller restaurant around the corner and they were VERY professional and I told them my experience here. The owner’s wife spoke to with me also and made fried spinach for me at their establishment and it was good! Please train your employees to inform people of this instead of having them wasting gas driving far away. My relatives made fufu for Christmas and I had a few left over and was craving fried spinach as part of my heritage is of Nigerian, Ghanian, & Sierra Leone Heritage through my dad! I was coming here to support also!

This is a must stop for our family anytime we’re in the DMV. The customer service is amazing and this restaurant saves me time and sanity. They’ve even helped coordinate delivery to my hotel when I was in town for a work event. I no longer spend hours in the kitchen cooking soups and baking meat pies and sausage rolls for my Nigerian hubby. I simply call ahead and place my bulk order. Rhuth’s kitchen tastes so much like my hubby’s mom’s home cooking that he’s just as happy. Bonus- he appreciates me having the time back to spend with him while our whole family enjoys. We freeze a portion of the soups and pastries and bring out as needed. It’s a win-win for me.

Right, listen here, I’m absolutely livid. I went to Ruth’s African Kitchen in Wheaton, Maryland, the very day after my bloody birthday expecting something vibrant, authentic, a bit of culinary brilliance, yeah? Instead, what I got was nothing short of a catastrophic let-down. The two women at the counter had the audacity, the sheer effrontery, to lie straight to my face when I said, “I like it spicy, make it properly spicy.” And what do I get? A dish seasoned for toddlers, comfort spice, barely a tickle on the tongue. They clearly hadn’t the faintest clue what the assignment was. Now, moving on to the second crime. I ordered goat egusi, simple instruction, yeah? Goat. Yet when I opened that takeaway box, I was confronted by, good heavens, chicken feet! Bits of unidentifiable protein floating about like a science experiment gone wrong. I was mortified. The egusi was so atrocious I binned it on sight. Honestly, it was an insult to both palate and presentation. And the jollof rice, don’t get me started. Bland, spiritless, devoid of the depth, the heat, the soul that proper West African jollof should command. It’s as though the Nigerians out here have completely lost their ancestral touch when it comes to spice. When I say spicy, I mean fiery inferno, the sort that makes you sweat, question your life choices, and feel alive again. The Indians still hold the crown, clearly. So no, absolutely not, I shan’t be returning. This wasn’t African cuisine; this was a tragic Westernized parody of it. Call it African-American comfort food if you must, but don’t you dare pass it off as authentic. Zero stars. A culinary disgrace of the highest order.

This is a family owned and take out place. It looks very clean and the food is authentic. The owner step out to greet. Her son attends the cashier on weekends and he was very friendly. I appreciate having authentic food in the area without having to travel to another continent to try it.

First off , I’m Nigerian American so this cuisine is not new to me. I ordered from this place on Uber eats yesterday . I ordered red chicken stew with fufu . When I received my food the fufu was SPOILED. It had a very bad smell coming from it and the taste was sour . For those that are new , fufu is not supposed to smell or taste like anything. The bowl I received was not spicy just a HALF FULL BOWL of tomato sauce and two pieces of fried oily drumsticks. I immediately contacted Uber eats and got a full refund . I’m highly disappointed and upset for the price that I paid and the time I wasted waiting I ended up eating noodles instead . PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT. Go to rainbows African cuisine in Gaithersburg instead . They will not do you wrong ! Their food is very delicious

If there were a rating higher than five stars, Rhuths African Kitchen would shatter the scale completely. This is not just a restaurant. This is not just food. This is a full-body, soul-awakening, life-changing culinary experience that redefines what it means to eat well. From the very first bite, it becomes clear that Rhuths African Kitchen operates on a level that most places can only dream of reaching.
The food is UNREAL. Every dish is bursting with bold, fearless, perfectly layered flavors that command your full attention. The seasoning is immaculate—deep, rich, complex, and powerful without ever overpowering the dish. This is master-level cooking. The kind of cooking that makes you close your eyes, pause mid-bite, and seriously question how something can taste this good. Each plate feels like it was crafted with precision, patience, and generations of culinary wisdom.
The meats are so tender they practically melt before you even chew. The sauces are thick, luxurious, and drenched in soul—each one rich with spice, warmth, and authenticity. Every spoonful feels comforting yet exciting, familiar yet elevated. The sides don’t just “accompany” the meal—they stand boldly on their own, seasoned to perfection and prepared with just as much care as the main dishes. NOTHING is an afterthought here.
And let’s talk about authenticity—because Rhuths African Kitchen does not play around. This is REAL African cuisine, unapologetically traditional, proudly presented, and cooked with immense respect for culture and heritage. You can taste the history. You can feel the love. This is food that speaks. Food that hugs you. Food that reminds you what cooking is supposed to be.
The portions? INSANELY generous. You leave full, satisfied, and already planning your next visit. The value is unmatched—every plate feels priceless because of the quality, the flavor, and the care poured into it. This is the kind of food that ruins other restaurants for you because once you’ve tasted Rhuths, the bar has officially been raised to the sky.
Rhuths African Kitchen isn’t just feeding people—it’s creating memories. It’s introducing culture through flavor. It’s delivering joy, comfort, and excellence on every single plate. Whether you’re new to African cuisine or grew up with these flavors, this place will blow you away in ways you didn’t think were possible.
In conclusion: Rhuths African Kitchen is a LEGEND. A MUST-TRY. A NON-NEGOTIABLE experience. If you haven’t eaten here yet, you are genuinely missing out on something special. Five stars doesn’t do it justice—but it’s all the system allows.
