I went to Lao Peng You a while ago and somehow forgot to post a review.
I recently came across these photos on my phone, and they instantly reminded me how much I loved this meal.

Everything we ordered hit the spot Dan Dan Noodles packed with savory depth and chili oil, a comforting bowl of beef noodle soup with clean, rich flavor, and plump, juicy dumplings that tasted clearly handmade. The cold dishes were a perfect balance, adding brightness and freshness alongside the warm bowls.

Bold flavors, thoughtful seasoning, and that comforting, no-frills kind of cooking that food lovers appreciate. Combined with the lively, welcoming atmosphere, it’s the kind of place that stays in your memory long after the meal.

Lao Peng You is absolutely worth revisiting and clearly worth finally reviewing.

I arrived around 5:30 pm on a Friday evening, I was alone and got a table right away. It filled up quickly after I arrived.

I ordered the Dan Dan noodles, the chive and pork dumplings, the lamb and cumin pastry, and the Mallorca melon ice tea. Overall everything was good, I ordered a ton of food for just myself, it easily could of been split two or three ways. I packed more than half to bring home. The dumplings and the pastry were my favourite. Everything is a bit salty but it’s expected when the dumplings are in an entire bowl of broth/ soy sauce. The heat/spice was also good, but could be too much if youtre someone that finds toothpaste to be a bit spicy.

There wasn’t any AC on the day I was there, only over head fans. But there was a few patio tables outside.

The service was great, I had several different people check in on me during my meal.

Update – came back here again and am blown away by how good the cold noodles with beef was. Highly, highly recommend. It was sooo flavorful.

Must try and definitely worth the hype! I came here on a Saturday around 4pm – it was definitely busy, but got lucky and only had to wait 25 minutes. The pork and chive dumplings were phenomenal. The sauce that comes with it is sooo delicious. I will definitely be back.

Delicious noodles with the perfect kick! The cozy atmosphere makes you feel like you’re eating at grandma’s house, full of warmth and comfort. The dumplings were a standout, and I can’t wait to come back and try even more from the menu!

We were really excited to try this place. We drove 1 hr 40 mins to have dinner here with 3 friends (group of 5). There was a 1 hr 30 min wait when arriving at 5:30 pm. The Dan Dan noodles were okay; we’ve had better. We wouldn’t go here again just for that, with so many other great options in Chicago. The beef and green onion dumplings were good. The lamb and cumin bread was amazing! The bread might have been enough to make us return, but we were left with a bad taste in our mouth because, before we could finish drinking our tea, we were asked to leave since they needed the table. I get that we had finished paying, but what’s a few more minutes to finish our pot of tea? Especially considering we patiently waited to dine at your establishment!

2 hour wait on a Saturday afternoon. Disappointed to find all the broths saturated in so much chili oil to where it takes away from the flavors of the dishes. The broths are very oily and I would not recommend sipping much of the broth. The spiciness is fine, it’s just too much oil.
Dumplings are quality and clearly homemad. However, they difficult to eat and slurp the soup from as they are shaped like a pierogi not a traditional soup dumpling.
Surprised to see that you order at a counter, not through waiter.
I would recommend beef dumplings, the broth from the pork and chive dumplings, beef noodles soup, and beef sauce noodles. I’ve had this placed listed for two years and it is not worth a two hour wait. The photos look more appetizing if I am honest.

Ordered the pork and chive dumplings to-go and they were fine. I was kind of underwhelmed but they’re solid and they taste homemade. The sauce was fine—it’s mainly just vinegar and chili oil. I do think the price is a little high for the amount of dumplings given.

There was a bit of a wait, even after the lunch rush on a Sunday, but the food was so good!

Overall, very cozy vibe and very cozy dishes. We especially enjoyed the Dan Dan Noodles and appreciated that we could get the chili oil on the side to adjust the spiciness to our liking. Also recommend the House Noodle Soup!

The food here is great. The atmosphere could be great too because the decor is cool, but for some reason they choose to absolutely blast the music which kind of makes it uncomfortable and even annoying. Interesting choice of music too, given the name, cuisine, and customer expectation of the establishment. Just my $0.02..

The portions are large and meant for sharing. The dumplings and eggplant salad were amazing. Get there early to get a spot!
