Eric made our engagement dinner super special, taking my reservation far in advance, getting us a corner table, and selecting some spectacular wines to choose from. Every single dish was delicious, starting off with craft sourdough, their special butter and the best Salami I’ve ever had. Next was some grilled scallops with a parsnip foam and blood orange reduction and the grilled eggplant that was the epitome of savory goodness. The cream sauce rigatoni with rabbit was decadent and then the slow cooked, incredibly spiced cut of wagyu that has been shredded and cooked in a bed of puff pastry was unlike anything I’ve ever had. Desert and decaf espresso Our server Jordan was kind and very personable… I could go on and on about this place..
Last night we returned to Marigold for what was now our 3rd visit. The crew knocked it out of the park yet again, from host/server/sommelier-extraordinaire Eric B. to bartender Amy, and the chef and kitchen crew. Eric was his typical personable, attentive, and extremely knowledgeable self. The menu was fresh, creative, and incredibly flavorful.
We started with the finocchiona (a must-have every visit) followed by the farinata ripiena—a perfectly-crisped chickpea flour crepe filled with cherry, fennel, and boursin. Next, we had the squash, which was presented beautifully and had amazing flavor. That was followed by their “peach with country ham” dish which consisted of generous slices of delicious peaches coupled with prosciutto-esque slices of aged ham and various accoutrements. This was one of our favorite dishes of the night: the flavors and textures were layered and complemented each other perfectly. Then we split 3 main courses: the rigatoni with taleggio, arugula, tarragon, and walnut (delicious); the poulet rouge (chicken) ‘under a brick’ with chanterelle mushrooms and apricot (perfectly crisped and moist chicken, full of flavor); and the wagyu beef en croute. We finished up with a scoop each of fresh ginger ice cream and brown butter salted caramel ice cream.
If we had to pick a favorite dish of the night, the wagyu was probably it. Beyond the amazing flavor, presentation, and perfectly-cooked cut of meat, this dish truly showcased some amazing chef work. To take a less common cut of meat and figure out a way to make it into such an incredible dish…bravo! We learned that the dish takes over a week to prepare/cook so that it turns out just right.
Chef Theo, Eric, Amy, and the rest of the Marigold crew: bravo and thanks again; we can’t wait for our next visit.

This past Saturday we visited Marigold for the second time. Our first visit, for my dad’s 80th birthday, did not disappoint and we were excited to visit again. Chef Theo, the sommelier Eric, and our server (Madison?) were fabulous and the food was incredible. We had 8+ dishes over the course of the evening and each was delicious, creative, and skillfully crafted. There was no bad dish, yet the rigatoni with the lamb ragu was our favorite. Eric has a wealth of knowledge about wine and historical context. Our server was friendly, helpful and attentive. It was also a real pleasure to meet Chef Theo and hear some of his great stories. In addition to being a talented chef, he is extremely personable and down to earth. It was cool to see him out “front of house” bussing tables, chatting with customers, etc. He even took the time to lend a helping hand and coach me through filleting my first skate wing! What a gem in lovely, resilient Lyons. Can’t wait until our next visit!
Update after my 3rd visit here in a year. Down from 5 to 3 stars. If you are in Lyons, its a good option. If you are out of town, you have plenty of options. Kind folks with decent cuisine featuring inspired recipes and continental nods in a seasonal context, that almost hit the mark.
Service:
It would be 4ish, just based on the food, but our server cleared my setting while I stepped out for a moment, without checking in with me if I was finished, which I was not. Fair enough, we were close to the end of our 2 hour window, but the waiters apology for clearing my plate seemed trite, and disingenuous. They didnt offer any recompense of any kind. I don’t need my plate comp for that, but pretty much any nice restaurant that I go to that fancies themselves as mary gold does likes to take care of their customers in this case, and offers some small token. That miss will cost a star, which is just a shame as the waiters was generally great otherwise, and the chef spent some time with us, which I always appreciate. Their back of the house was radiating good energy.
Cuisine
The cuisine and cocktails over the last 2 visits have consistently been 4 stars, at best.
Negroni Noir: A bit unbalanced, with the black walnut blowing out the ginger and nutmeg
Greek Mountain: while the ginger was lost, the chamomile was up front, and softened the pineapple well. I very much enjoyed this.
Babbettes sourdough: always a win, the Marigold butter would go farther with salt flakes to acompany
Pate Foie Blonde: Smooth and rich pâté, the guanciale flavor was there, but the texture combined with the crumble of the crouton, prevented this 2 bite experience from being effortless.
Matrimonios: I have spent a bit of time in Spain and appreciate both mackerel and anchovies. The mackerel blew out this whole dish, and the pastry base did nor hold up at all. I lost the barrel aging notes of the anchovies to the mackerel.
Caramel with squash: the absolute winner of the night. Perfectly al dente, sagey sweet fall notes and a warm buttery base that cozied right up.
Grouper: a touch under done, and lacking complexity with a rather flat lentil ragout. Artichoke is always a nice note, but for me, it did not bring the dish together. The salsa verde had chimichurri nods that are always a win for me, but I would pass on this dish
Poultry rouge: delicate and perfectly cooked meat. The skin was not crispy as advertised. The chantrelle and sherry was balanced. While I would have loved more chantrelle, the sauce was highly enjoyable.
Hanger steak: I cannot comment personally, but my friend really enjoyed it.
Atmosphere:
Its a cute, appropriately lit spot right in the heart of Lyons, clean lines, and farmhouse kitchen touches warm up the space nicely. It gets a bit loud, but hey, that happens.
The price is in line with what they are working to achieve, but the combo of misses cost Marigold 2 stars for me this time. I will not be in a hurry to return, but would be happy to have an experience like my first, at some point in the future.

short story: go, with friends, make a reservation.
this lil gem has been on the list for a while and for all the right reasons. We finally made the beautiful short trek up the hill with some friends and Marigold delivered to expectation.
the cute and smartly appointed space is inviting and focuses you on your company and cuisine. the service is attentive, and prompt, but still casual.
this pairs nicely with the expertly crafted dishes . the lengua and pastas were stand out. their negroni was one of the best I have had. looking forward to returning soon.
