The nice young man who served us was prompt and professional, everything welcoming. He was quick with water, our appetizers, the box for the rest of my meal, and our check – and, he also offered to stop by the bank to get change (as they were out at the time), in case we wanted to pay with big bills. We decided not to, but we both appreciated the offer.
I quite liked the diner atmosphere itself, old wooden chairs and sturdy leather seating, and the restaurant had a counter somewhat like an old-time Frisch’s or Steak n Shake, but a lot more homey and welcoming than either of them. The only problem with the inside itself was that it was quite chilly in there, to the point where I thought several times about putting my big coat back on. I decided not to, but if you go, make sure to wear a nice sweater or cardigan or you’ll freeze before you get your food!
As for the food itself, I quite enjoyed my meal, though my mom was not as pleased with hers.
We started the meal with an order of the deep fried green beans, which were a strange texture (to us) at first, but gradually grew more and more enjoyable as time went on. I especially liked the taste of the breading when paired with the soft, sweet firmness of the seeds. Very tasty! The only problem with it is that we would advise perhaps pairing the green beans with a different sauce, as the ranch was a bit odd with the green beans. The homemade ranch was good, but it was almost too much with the richness of the appetizer overall.
We thought a nice spicy-sweet sauce would maybe work a little bit better than the ranch that was offered (and it was still good, make no mistake!). If you’re looking for possibilities, maybe a nice Thai chili sauce, or maybe even something like honey chipotle or chipotle ranch might cut a little bit better through the rich breading and enhance the taste of the green bean.
As for our entrees, I got the Grilled Ham and Cheese on texas toast and french fries, and the only complaint I had about either was that the fries needed more salt and pepper – which they had readily available on the table, so that was all good. I am usually quite picky about (slightly) thicker-cut ham, but this was so good. (I LOVE a good piece of ham). I couldn’t finish all of it, so I took the rest home, and it will make me an excellent dinner later tonight.
My mom got the Sweet and Spicy Chicken Sandwich, and she said the coleslaw, pickles, and fries were decent, but she only finished her sandwich because she did not want to waste money (which is a first for her). She stated that it tasted vaguely of fish, and that the way it was fried also seemed very much like how one would fry a fish filet, instead of chicken. (Part of the skin kept slipping off when she tried to eat the sandwich, like the skin was entirely separate from the chicken itself, and it just seemed odd.) We had to go and find a coffee shop after, so she could get that taste out of her mouth.
Overall, I would say that Alleyway Cafe is a good place to eat, with filling food and a welcoming atmosphere, but if you stop by yourself, be sure to focus on the more ‘traditional’ diner food.
The Bad: The wait is a little ridiculous, my husband and I stood for 15 minutes before being seated, it wouldn’t have taken a second to sit us at one of the two booths available right in front of us, plus the whole back was empty, the servers kept walking right past us without saying a word. Once seated we ordered our drinks and an appetizer, soup and the pretzel and beer cheese appetizer, I said please bring the soup out right away (if you could please), it took forever to get, they forgot to give me a spoon, it took forever to get one, by the time I got it, my soup was cold, has to send it back, they finally took our lunch order, when it arrived after waiting almost 30 minutes, everything was cold and had to be sent back, the servers (while sweet and nice) were young and inexperienced, no one overseeing if customers were adequately taken care of. The fly population is out of control every time we go there, we’ve been there several times, each time every customer at every table keeps shewing away flies. While we love Germantown and love this little restaurant, it could be run so much more efficiently if they take care of these problems. We’ll come again a time or to see if anything changes and hopefully it will be a better experience because we really like it there.
